Do you like scary movies?

What about your kid? Earlier this week, my sister posted a status about my niece having nightmares for months after watching a movie at school. Without knowing what movie they’d show in grade three that would scare a kid that much, I assumed it had to be Bach and Broccoli or something with Bill Murray. I called her up to see what movie scared my niece and it turns out it was Roald Dahl’s The Witches. I was immediately confused because I was certain that the movie was produced by Jim Hensen, so it couldn’t have been that scary, right?

After I got off the phone, I did a little research, I looked up some photos and watched the trailer (see below) and I came to the conclusion that yes, this movie is terrifying, even as a grown up, the memories of terror came rushing back. Even the trailer features some pretty gruesome shots, especially if you consider that it is a movie for kids. I mean I get that a lot of kids wouldn’t be bothered by this movie, particularly those who play violent video games and such, for some more sensitive kids, what a dilemma!

I definitely feel mad for my niece, I remember that one time when I was a kid, I watched Arachnophobia. That movie scared me for years!

So what kid movies still give you nightmares?  Although I loved it, Labyrinth was pretty scary…so was the sequel to Problem Child.

Oh and if this post has made you feel nostalgic to re-watch The Witches, you can stream it for a few bucks on YouTube.
