Everything is coming up roses for Netflix right now.  House of Cards, Arrested Development and Hemlock Grove all picked up Emmy nominations and then Orange is the New Black became EVERYONE’s obsession (including mine.)

Ricky Gervais is also on a pretty unstoppable streak.  While his movies have generally been met with mixed reviews, Gervais has always excelled at television, as witnessed by the success of shows like The Office, Extras and Life’s Too Short.

So, it’d only make sense that Netflix and Ricky Gervais would team up, right?

Meet Derek, the new Netflix series that will premiere on September 12th. Like all of Netflix’s shows, the series will be available all at once, making binging on some cringe-worthy comedy as easy as possible.  Like all his shows, Gervais writes and stars in the comedy-drama about a loyal nursing home caretaker who sees only the good in his quirky coworkers as they struggle against prejudice and shrinking budgets to care for their elderly residents.  We haven’t really seen Ricky tackle drama, but judging by the trailer, the results are both funny and sweet.

The Netflix debut is considerable considering that up until now, all of Gervais’ shows have premiered on premium channels like HBO Canada. This is quite the coup for Netflix.

Take a look at the trailer, what do you think, will you be watching?
