One of the 70’s biggest disaster movies, besides Grease 2, The Towering Inferno gets the blu-ray treatment today, with the release of the epic movie which stars Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire , Susan Blakely and O.J Simpson. Yes, that O.J Simpson.

Since getting my blu-ray a couple of months ago, one of my favorite features is how it makes older movies look brand new again. They don’t have that tinge to them that instantly reminds you that this movie is older than dirt. The Towering Inferno is a prime example of making the movie is brand new.

When doing some reading up on the movie, I was surprised to read that Inferno was nominated for eight Academy awards (including best picture), which is practically unheard of in today’s boring-independent-movie obsessed Academy nominations. The movie ended up taking home three Oscars. Suck on that Dark Knight.

The movie is loads of fun and there is still lots of action to amuse even the most CGI-obsessed mind. Some of the features go into showing you how the special effects were done, which turns out to be very interesting and VERY different from how it’s done today.

Aside from Harry Potter, there aren’t too many action movies coming to you this summer. May I suggest checking out Towering Inferno before it’s inevitable remake, this way you can see how real action movies used to be made!
