More than a hundred gay Canadians have joined together (literally) to make the gayest sweater anyone has ever seen.
Okay, that probably needs some context.
The Gay Sweater Project is an initiative created to educate people that the word ‘gay’ should not be used to describe anything negative.   People are gay. Things are not.Â
The Canadian Centre for Gender & Sexual Diversity just released this FANTASTIC video that shows how they made the world’s first and only 100% object that can truly be called ‘so gay’ without being an insult: #TheGaySweater – an actual sweater that was knit in Toronto, made from the hair of follicly-blessed gay individuals who donated their locks to the cause.
(Side note: The things I would do to be follicly-blessed.)
I definitely hear “That’ so gay” quite a bit, but I really hope it’s something that’s going the way of the dodo. Same with “That’s so retarded.” I’m always baffled when I hear grown ups say either of them. But I think it’s a case of education. I don’t think most people say it to be mean or insulting, they just don’t realize that they are being mean or insulting. But they are. And hopefully this video will help them see how silly they sound.
The Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity (CCGSD) develops initiatives like this that work to eliminate bullying, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination in schools while simultaneously educating and building mass awareness amongst the general public is integral in order to broaden perspectives, and help people to understand that their words can often have a profound impact on others.
I love this campaign. Very creative and with a powerful message. If you think so too, make sure you share it. The only way we can stop people from staying “That’s So Gay” is to show them the thing that is actually SO GAY.
