It’s one of those wonderfully hot summers and hot summers mean lots of things from days on the beach, to epic hikes, there’s no shortage of ways for Albertans to take in the long summer days. An exciting campaign this summer with Alberta Depot aims to remind Albertans that while you’re soaking your toes in the river or taking the selfie atop a mountain, when you’re enjoying your favourite beverages be sure to save the containers instead of tossing them, spot an Alberta Depot or recycling bin near you.
It’s something I don’t think about often, but we’ve paid a deposit on those beverage containers, so why not at least get your money back?  If you’re unsure what can be recycled and how much you get, here’s some handy info.
Alberta is actually home to one of the most successful recycling systems in the world, and I’m guessing that has to do with just how easy it has become to recycle as a whole. From curbside compost pickup to the over 200 bottle depots that provide refunds in exchange for the return of beverage containers, Alberta is leading the way when it comes to recycling.
For containers one litre or less, you pay 10 cents. Containers over one litre gets you 25 cents and if you look at what’s in your recycling container right now, you know those numbers add up.
For example: Say you wanted to treat yourself to a nice Sunday morning latte? Then be sure to return those wine bottles from the dinner party the night before.  Every day we’re buying beverage containers and if you’re like me, you tend to think that it’s just 10 cents here, 25 cents there, but all that money adds up quickly, especially because it’s so easy to get that money back in your pocket.
But it’s more than just getting back that money you paid on your deposit, of course recycling is all about making a big impact. But how big of an impact? Well, there’s a calculator for that.  On the Alberta Depot website, you’ll find a pretty neat impact calculator that shows you the impact your recycling has on the world around you. Â
Have you recycled something like 100 beverage containers this month?  Than you’ve already made a big impact around your environment.
Whether it’s in your environment or bank account, every deposit creates a change that counts and that’s pretty incredible.
This summer, it’s time to sip, save and spot an Alberta Depot. We can create #ChangeThatCounts to our environment and treat ourselves to some fun treats along the way.
