For the first time in weeks, Calgary is not feeling the effects of a weekend with a heavy snowfall warning! It’s Spring! Glorious Spring! With so much to do in the city, it can kind of becoming overwhelming if you are trying to find just one thing to do!
Enter Mark Hopkins, the mastermind behind Swallow-a-Bicycle theatre company. Probably the biggest knower of all things Calgary, Mark has done up his top three picks for the weekend!
Kit and Kaboodle Circus
April 9 (2:00, 7:00 pm) & April 10 (3:00 pm)
Inglewood Community Centre
1740 24th Ave SE
I never really had that childhood urge to run away and join the circus… but now that we have an honest-to-goodness homegrown circus in Calgary, I may want to re-think! “The whole kit and kaboodle” means “everything and more”, and this show delivers: magicians, jugglers, bellydancers, fire-spinners, Parkour acrobats – and best of all, they’re local artists! If you’re a fan of the wild and whimsical, spice up your weekend with a day at the circus.
Sean Connery is James Bond
1133 Kensington Rd NW
A mysterious scientist sabotages the American space program! Fiendish villains set a deadly trap in the heart of Russia! A diabolical genius plans an economy-crippling gold robbery! This weekend at Calgary’s classic Plaza Theatre, three original James Bond flicks from 1962-64, starring Sean Connery, will be screened back-to-back – Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. Super agents, assassins, laser guns and Pussy Galore… oh man.
April 9, 13 & 15
1415 14th Ave NW
Recently, I spotted this on @CalgaryOpera’s Twitter feed:
Just overheard someone outside react to our logo on the building: “Opera?! They do opera in Canada!?”
This struck me as both hilarious and heartbreaking. Yes, we do opera in Canada! Calgary Opera has been doing a damn fine job of it for nearly 40 years. Aida, set in Pharaoh’s Egypt, is a sweeping tale of servants, soldiers and princesses, performed on a majestic stage with the music of Giuseppe Verdi. This production unites Calgary Opera, Alberta Ballet and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra – so you can get a triple-dose of culture in a single evening!
Would love to perpetually get updated great weblog! .
