Going to a Dan Mangan and Sam Roberts concert is pretty cool, all on its own.  However, one way to make it cooler would be to have the Canadian singers rock out in the Canadian rockies and that’s exactly what happened this weekend, when the two Juno Award winners took over the small mountain town of Banff for a very cool sold out Performance in the Park!

The weather, however, was not as cool.  The rain certainly put a damper on things, ironic given that the event was completely dry.  That right, an outdoor concert without beer.  But what the event lacked in beer, it made up in incredibly cute senior citizens crammed behind a BBQ selling hot dogs for a church fundraiser.  I hope that doesn’t read as sarcastic, because it was really, really cute.

Okay, sorry, back to the music.  It’s hard to say anything new about Dan Mangan and Sam Roberts because they are both such consistently good performers.  I’m sure they would have loved to perform with the sun and beautiful blue skies, but this is rock and roll, and it really is all about the music. The crowd seem a little quieter then I would have expected, but again, I think that was the weather more than anything.  The people I talked to were all having an awesome time and were just excited to have, what felt like, an intimate performance in the mountains with these two huge acts.

Here are some photos from the concert.  It was definitely worth the drive up and I can’t wait to see who they have in store for next year’s line up!

Lastly, here’s a quick clip of Dan Mangan’s “Robots.” Rain or shine, this song is one of his best!
