The Academy Awards announced their nominations for Hollywood’s biggest night and our little country got a big vote of confidence.
The Canadian film War Witch (trailer above) was nominated for Best Foreign Picture. This is incredibly impressive, considering a record 71 counties submitted films this year. Fun fact, this is Canadian seventh nomination in this category. We won in 2003 for the Barbarian Invasions.
The documentary is about a young girl surviving in war-torn Africa. The film has been doing really well on the film festival circuit. At Berlin, the film’s star, Rachel Mwanza won the Silver Bear for Best Actress and she won again at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. War Witch is available to own or rent on iTunes.
Other Canadian nominations announced this morning included:
It was also an especially good morning for Torontonian Mychael Danna who picked up two nominations for his work on Life of Pi. The composer is nominated for Original Score and Original Song, which he shares with Bombay Jayashri for the “Pi’s Lullaby.”
