My birthday wish!

Christmas is cool, Easter is fun, March Break is sweet. But do you know what is the best of all the holidays? YOUR BIRTHDAY! Yeah, I know what your saying, technically it isn’t a holiday, but shouldn’t it be?

For years now I’ve become increasingly frustrated with how passive and quiet people are about their birthdays. I hate hearing about a co-worker’s birthday the day of or a couple of days later. I always ask them, why didn’t they tell me that it was their birthday? I would have done or bought them something for them. The response always seems to be the same: “I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it”.

What? Are you kidding me? You didn’t want to make a big deal out of the day you were born? How is that even possible? Yeah you are another year older, but so is everyone else. It’s unavoidable. And just think of all the other people who don’t get to celebrate their birthday this year because well, because they are dead.

Birthdays exist for celebration. I don’t care if you are turning 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. The great thing about your birthday is that it is all about you. You can do anything you want, ask for anything you want. And at some point during the day you’ll probably get a couple of gifts for doing absolutely nothing besides showing up 9 months after you parents did it. It is a win-win situation.

For my birthday I start a countdown. Sometimes it starts months in advance. I mean why not? The more people that know about it, the more attention I’ll get. The nicer people will be and in a city like Calgary, I’ll take someone being nice to me for now reason any chance I can get.

In a mere 45 minutes I will be celebrating my 25th birthday. Do I like the number? No, I really don’t. Besides the fact that I can finally rent a car, I’d much rather stick to the low 20s. But what can you do? I’ll tell you what I’m going to do: I’m going to enjoy the day. I’m going to enjoy people giving me cards and posting on my Facebook wall. I’m going to have a great time have dinner with my friends and be sung happy birthday to. Because it is my birthday. A day all about me. So whenever your birthday is make sure you tell someone, heck tell everyone. Because every now and then there is nothing better than eating some chocolate cake and celebrating a day all about you.
