Calgary has long been home to the White Hat ceremony. It’s a way of welcoming dignitaties to the city and thanking them for popping by. Unfortunately, the hat and the ceremony itself has always felt a little like we are bribing people to say nice things about our city!
And that’s the topic of today’s column in Metro. Should the white ceremony stay or should it go? The complication of course is that the White Hat Awards are also reserved for those amazing volunteers who contribute to the city. So if it takes them twenty years to get an award, why do we just give them out to celebrities?
