Today is known as Spirit Day, a day where people are meant to speak out against bullying and to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth.

And while I typically don’t write about my private life, I felt compelled to do so today. I don’t know if it’s because of Amanda Todd, or if it’s because it’s something that I’ve been thinking about for a long time, but bullying has absolutely had both a positive and negative effect on my life. And while, it’s been a while since I’ve technically been bullied, putting yourself out there online, for the whole world to see, certainly leaves you open to those nasty online trolls, so sadly, it never really goes away.

I’m lucky enough to have something like my Metro column to share my story of “surviving” high school. I’m self-aware enough to not think that my story might change someone’s thoughts about suicide or other dramatic actions that teens might take, but so far today it’s created a fantastic conversation online, which is more than I could have asked for.

Click here to read my column and if you have a story, feel free to share it.
