Have you noticed how well Canadian music has been doing lately?  Check out the Billboard charts, which are currently being dominated by Drake, Justin Bieber, Michael Buble and Nickelback.

But since when has Canadian music been just a boys club?

Female canucks have a long history of chart domination and it’s just a matter of time until we see it again, perhaps with either one of these two videos from Carly Rae Jepsen or Ash Koley.  In the past few days, they’ve both released new videos and they give me hope for the rise of the female Canadian pop star!

Ash Koley “Apple of My Eye.”

Okay, while Ash Koley isn’t a solo female artist, her name is the name of the band, so I’ll allow it. I’ve been a fan of the Winnipeg-based duo for sometime, but I was surprised how long it took them to release a video for one of their best songs Apple of My Eye, which is off of their debut album ‘Inventions’.  In the world of pop songs about drinking and being trashy, their quirky charm, and upbeat classic pop music is refreshing.

Carly Rae Jepsen

Arguably Canadian Idols most successful solo artist released the single Call Me Maybe a few weeks ago and since then, her rapid online fan base has patiently been waiting for the video.   It was shown earlier this week on Muchmusic, but now it can be enjoyed by the masses sans commercials.  In it, Carly flexes her comedic timing and offers up quite a twist…you’ll have to watch it to the very end.  I’m not usually very thankful for Canadian Idol, but if the only reason it existed was to get Carly Rae on our iPods faster, than so be it!
