Presented by the East Village

If you like taking photos like I do, you already know that fall is Calgary is one of the best times of the year. The golden yellow and the bright blue skies combine to create a colour palate like no other. Now picture that and add a food truck festival, a harvest celebration, a giant leaf pit and you’ll have lots to be thankful this Thanksgiving weekend!

This Saturday (starting at 11 am), the East Village is continuing its own tradition of giving Calgarians lots of reasons to come explore the area. They’ve combined what were previously two wonderful October events into a one-day autumn extravaganza, Fall for East Village – Harvest and Food Truck Festival.

Grab your friends and family and head down to the newly restored St. Patrick’s Island for this rustic-esque country fair to an beautifully designed urban oasis right in the middle of the Bow River. The market will feature more than 20 local vendors selling their wares and bounties in Confluence Plaza on the east end of the island. The island will also be filled with music by the likes of Rotary Park and Tim Leacock Band.

If you’re one of those aforementioned fans of photography, I think you better come with you camera fully ready to take hundreds, if not thousands of beautiful photos. What better way for families to spend Thanksgiving Weekend Saturday than in the park celebrating with delicious food truck grub, bobbing for apples, making fun art projects and splurging on a few one-of-a-kind market finds with their community?

Over on The Rise there’ll be a giant Leaf Pit! And don’t worry, I asked and can confirm it is an all-ages leaf pit. Hello, childhood memories. I’ve missed you!

The busy fun-filled day continues at 3pm the annual FEASTY awards take place in the amphitheater where food trucks can vie for cash prizes and bragging rights. They’ll present dishes using seasonal mystery ingredients to a panel of local judges who will score on the basis of presentation, creativity, use of ingredients and fit with the truck. There is also pumpkin carving competition. Participating trucks will display their works of art and the public will vote on which one they like best. The winning truck will receive a FEASTY award and a donation of $500 in their name made to their favourite charity!

If you’re heading down this weekend, there’s lots of ways to get there. Biking to the East Village is one of the city’s most beautiful rides. Or you can hop off at the Bridgleand LRT Station or you can park at the Calgary Zoo’s West Entrance!
