Four very Alberta moments at the Oscars!

Did you watch last night’s Oscars? There were certainly some highs and lows. Truthfully, I’m not sure how much I’ll remember of them this time next week. But, that’s not to say that it wasn’t a big night for lots of people, including a few people with some connections to Alberta. In case you didn’t see the show, here’s what missed!

Everything is awesome about Tegan and Sara at the Oscars!

Probably one of Calgary’s most famous exports, the sister duo of Tegan and Sara put on the show’s most fun performance along with the The Lonely Island! They didn’t win, but I have a feeling we’ll see them performing on the big stage again someday.

Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu wins Best Director!

The acclaimed director scored big at this year’s Oscars, winning Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture. So how is he following up his big win? He’s currently shooting The Revenant with Leonardo Dicaprio and Tom Harty outside of Canmore. If you drive up behind the Nordic centre, the set is very easy to spot.

John Legend & Common performance Glory

Okay, admittedly this one is a stretch, but Common did live and work around Calgary during his four seasons on AMC’s Hell on Wheels. He become quite a fixture in Calgary and it wasn’t uncommon to spot him along 17th avenue. See what I did there?

Interstellar Wins Best Special Visual Effects

Filming for Christopher Nolan’s scifi opus took place in Alberta, Iceland and Los Angeles. Many of the scenes were worked on buy Alberta’s film crew and featured hundreds of extras.
