Well here’s something we don’t see very often: An original scripted Canadian comedy. They are almost as rare as a hair growing on my head.

City (which dropped the TV on January 1st) premieres the first of its two new sitcoms on February 4th and so far, so good. The first promo popped up online today and there’s enough there to catch my interest. Seed is a new half hour comedy about Harry, a bachelor who finds that his foray into the world of sperm donation has resulted in kids (lots of them) and becomes entangled in the lives of his new-found children and their less-than-thrilled families – whether they want him to or not.

The show stars Canadian actors Adam Korson (2 Broke Girls) and Carrie-Lynn Neales (The L.A. Complex) and its first season will feature 13 episodes, which is pretty standard for a Canadian TV comedy.

Speaking of the Canadian comedy, I’m so desperate for this show to succeed. Besides a handful of laughers on the CBC, most of which are sketch shows, our TV landscape really doesn’t reflect how funny we Canadians are. I’m excited that City is taken on an area that is certainly lacking. After the premiere of Seeds, the network will also welcome “Package Deal,” which is Halifax-filmed comedy featuring a live studio audience, which is even more rare nowadays.

Why do you think comedies struggle so much in Canada?

Click here to see the preview of Seed and let me know what you think. My fingers are crossed.
