Well this is just great news!
It’s just been announced that Calgary will be playing host to the 2016 Juno Awards. Which, in case you didn’t know, are like our Grammy Awards. Except they’re like the Oscars, because CTV has turned them into a big awards spectacle. And our actual Oscars are called the Canadian Screen Awards, and they are actually being given out this weekend and I bet you didn’t know that. So that’s why the Junos are really our Oscars. Make sense?
Anyway, The Juno Week celebration will kick off March 28th and culminate with the actual awards on April 3, live from the Saddledome! Calgary last hosted the Junos in 2008.
If you’ve never been to the Junos, I actually think Juno week is the best part. During the days leading up to the awards show, any venue you can think of becomes packed with the country’s biggest bands doing special shows, meet and greets and stuff like that. If I’m being completely honest, the actual awards are the least interesting part. So I’m telling you right now to leave April 1st and April 2nd, 2016 open because there will be some awesome shows and concerts that you won’t want to miss out on! This is definitely a big win for Calgary’s local businesses.
The last time the Junos were in Calgary, it was the first time I had ever been to a media event and I was way out of my league. Feist had just won a bunch of Juno awards and I had a chance to ask a question. I panicked and asked her “How many iPods do you own?” You know, cause of that commercial? Feist was so annoyed, she got the entire room full of press to boo me. It was brutal. But, my idol Rick Campenelli walked up after and asked me if I was okay, so it was all worth it, I guess. Plus, Breakfast Television’s Jill Belland was sitting in front of me and she turned around to see who everyone was booing at. I was on the show for the first time the next week.
This year’s Junos will be held in Hamilton on Sunday, March 15th.
