I’m very excited to say that on Sunday, April 8th, I’ve raised enough money to host a free screening of the fantastic film called Love, Simon.

Love, Simon is your typical high school romance movie, but what makes it unique is that’s the first major studio film to be about a gay romance.  My boyfriend and I saw it on opening weekend and we’ve been talking about it ever since.

Much like they did for movies like Black Panther and A Wrinkle In Time, celebrities have been buying out movie theatres so people can see Love, Simon for free.  I wanted to contribute and do the same thing here in Calgary, but, as you probably guessed it, those celebrities have a lot more money than me.

As luck would have it, I happen to live in a generous city and once I put the call out that I would contribute the first $500, but I needed help raising the rest. So I created an Indigogo campaign and we raised enough money to host the screening in just a matter of hours.

I reached out to Landmark Cinemas to see if they could move us to a bigger theatre and they agreed, so we raised more money and now we have enough for 295 people to see Love, Simon for free.

This experience has been amazing, especially getting messages from the film’s director Greg Berlanti and writer Isaac Aptaker, both who expressed thanks for showing the movie for free!
