Looking for something to do this weekend in Calgary? (Hey, we’re more than just cowboy hats, you know?) As always, I got the one and only Mark Hopkins to do up a list of his favourites weekend events!
Take a look, what do you think you’ll get up to?
CJSW Summer Concert Series
Saturday, June 4, 7:00-10:00 pm
Olympic Plaza (228 8th Ave SE)
Few things make me happier than dancing in the open air to incredible local music. Night Committee, peAks, Sandy Cassels and Samantha Savage Smith perform at the first of four outdoor concerts in the CJSW Summer Concert Series, running until the end of August. And if, god forbid, it starts to rain, you can wander over to Endeavor Arts Gallery for the opening of FOUR, or to Cantos Music Foundation for the 2011 Deaf Art Show.
Pages at the Plaza
Sunday, June 5, 11:00 am
The Plaza Theatre (1133 Kensington Rd NW)
www.pages.ab.ca
When you’ve got one of Calgary’s best bookstores sitting next to one of Calgary’s best movie theatres, it was only a matter of time before they teamed up to create some alchemical magic. Pages at the Plaza is a monthly series that features fascinating conversations with brilliant thinkers – plus a box lunch from Red Tree Catering!
This month is called “Be Different: Confessions of a Free Range Aspergian” featuring John Elder Robison, a man with Asperger’s who has designed toys for Milton Bradley, toured with KISS and runs a multi-million dollar car shop.
Calgary Ukrainian Festival
Saturday-Sunday, June 4-5
Acadian Recreation Complex (240 90 Ave SE)
www.calgaryukrainianfestival.ca
Vitaemo! Calgary’s Ukrainian Community demonstrates its hospitality with a two-day festival of song, dance and music. The festival centrepiece is Zabava!, a high-energy dance party where the drinks flow freely, and you can try traditional social dances like the butterfly, polka and schottische… and maybe even catch an exuberant Kolomeyka!
