You might be surprised to know that it has almost been FIVE years since Avril Lavigne released a full album. Yet if it has been that long, why does she still seem to be all over the place and usually not for very good reasons.
But personal life aside, I’ve actually always really enjoyed Avril’s music, no matter how scattered it has been sometimes.  Well I’ve got some good news for us few fans that remain, Lavigne has just announced that her new album will be released on March 8, 2011. Staying true to her melo-dramatic roots, the disc will be called Goodbye Lullaby. It’s first single is called the equally over-dramatic ‘What the Hell‘ and will premiere on Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve.
I’ve always kinda felt like Avril got a shitty end of the deal. Sure she’s sold more than thirty million albums but I can’t figure out why she isn’t liked more? By all accounts, she generally seems like a nice person. I mean does she ever smile? No, not really. And remember that whole “girls who wear ties” ties thing? Yeah, that was pretty annoying too. But her music is pretty good and Let Go is still one of my favourite albums to listen to from start to finish. Stop that judging right now, you know you’ve done it too!
I think what happened is that Avril got on the wrong side of Perez Hilton and he’s never forgiven her. Unfortunately, people like Perez seem to have a lot of control over what teens will spend their money on and it doesn’t look like Avril will fare any better this time around. I think that Perez’s dislike of Avril may be the single most damaging thing that has ever happened to her career.
Wow. I can’t believe I’m still writing about Avril, but I still have more to say. I guess I kinda just wished that Avril would come home and be Canadian again. You can be successful internationally and still have a Postal Code, you know? I think it would help with her image and let her seem to be at least more authentic. She could do cool speaking engagements for youth, host television specials like Elvis Costello does on CTV and most importantly, stop selling herself for products like Canon just to pay her LA mortgage. It just seems weird for her to be selling cameras, no?
Okay, so this turned into a mini-thesis, but what can I say? I’m just a little protective of Avril, but like she’s always said: “What did you have to go and make things so complicated?”
I like her too. Sssssshhhhh, it’s a secret! 🙂
