As many of you know, I’ve been deeply moved and involved by all the work everyone is doing to help get a Gay Straight Alliance in every school. There are still a lot of roadblocks ahead of us, but people are making a difference and most of those people aren’t even old enough to vote yet.
Today, the students behind Forest Lawn High School’s GSA released a video called #safeAB: Changing The Way We Treat Each Other. They gathered together supporters of GSAs and together we’re getting the message out there that all students deserve to have a GSA.
Of course the end goal of this video is to create real change, but I also want it to give people hope. I can’t imagine what it might be like to live in a rural Albert and not feel supported by your parents, school board and government. It would be devastatingly lonely. I hope that those kids see this video and know that there is help out there. That there are thousands of Albertans and Canadians that support them.
No matter where you live, if you feel like you need support or if you want to help, check out the Calgary GSA Network. They can definitely help you!
And if you’re in the LGTBQ or are an ally, please watch this video and share it. Lets show all Albertans that everyone deserves to feel safe and welcomed wherever they go.
