Theatre Calgary’s new program offers discounted tickets and cool networking opportunities.

Jan 09, 2017

Attention wannabe theatre aficionados or theatre fans always trying to get their friends to come with them to the theatre…

Theatre Calgary launched a program this year called The Greenroom – “an opportunity for the ‘next generation’ of theatre champions to engage with Theatre Calgary and each other”. They’ve developed the program to include just what I think we need: cheaper tickets, snacks, and a bar. Mission accomplished, folks.

Basically, on the first Thursday of each show, we young folk (yes, I said WE), can access theatre with The Greenroom discount ($10 off any ticket you want) and can spend time drinking, snacking, and chatting with fellow Greenroom-ers in the Greenroom Lounge before the show. There are also usually an artist talk on those nights in the main lobby, so you can get a full artistic experience or just hang in the lounge.

Lot’s of Calgary organizations offer programs like this to increase accessibility and community for young professionals – Club Wolfgang at the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra comes to mind. I hope the trend continues!

Membership in The Greenroom doesn’t officially open until next year, but it’ll be totally free. Meanwhile, Theatre Calgary is offering ‘Greenroom Curious’ nights this year. The next one is coming up January 26 for The Audience. Here’s the schedule:

Greenroom Curious Nights 2017:

The Audience: Jan. 26, 2017

A Thousand Splendid Suns: March 9, 2017

Crazy For You®: April 20, 2017

The Audience is about Queen Elizabeth II and her 60 years of meetings with her many Prime Ministers, so it’s perfect for anyone (like me) who binged on The Crown this Christmas. I’ve heard that the Greenroom Lounge will feature English tea sandwiches – seriously.

I’ve got two tickets to The Audience with Greenroom Access on January 26 to give away. The lounge opens at 6:30pm, and the show is at 7:30.

To be entered, leave a comment below about your favourite play you’ve ever seen.

I’ll do the draw on January 23rd. Good luck!

I loved the christmas carole and Les Mis!

  2. Susan Burney

We saw Legend Has It on New Years Eve last year as a family, and hooked the boy child into the world of theatre. Best play ever!

  3. Andrea

My favourite play is the Christmas Carol every year at Theatre Calgary, there’s something magic about it during the holidays. Last year I also enjoyed The Little Prince.

  4. Lisha

My favourite play is The Butcher

  5. Eric

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)
Apparently not liking Shakespeare in High School didn’t stop the many, many references from hitting the funny bone.
