Tonight, The first ever winner of Canada’s Got Talent was announced in dramatic fashion……

In the end, dance group, Sagkeeng’s Finest, from Fort Alexander, Manitoba were crowed the show’s winner and take home the top prize of a $100,000 prize, a car, a trip to Tobago, a spot in Citytv’s New Year’s Eve show and a chance to perform in Las Vegas.

I didn’t follow this season of the show very closely, I’ve never really been a fan of the Got Talent format, I’d love to see the acts more than just three times. But from what I’ve read, people will be happy that the coolest tap dancers around won the top prize.

Take a look at Sagkeeng’s Finest semi-final performance, and see for yourself.

Are you happy with the winner?

A sign of me getting older is how little I find myself watching MTV Canada these, even though it used to regularly be on my rotation, but two big announcements have brought the talk channel to the fore-front of my TV lately, even if it’s a little surprising.

MTV Live’s Daryn Jones has announced that he’s leaving the network….for CBC, wait, it gets stranger. He’ll be hosting the new musical-competition reality show Over the Rainbow, which seeks to find a new Dorothy (and Toto) for the upcoming Mirvish production of Wizard of Fun. I say it’s a strange move, because Daryn Jones and musicals on CBC doesn’t necessarily come to mind when I think of perfect television pairings. I’ve always been a fan of Jones, so it will be interesting to see how he does on the more conservative network, especially after years and years of pretty much getting to do whatever he wants on MTV Canada. That being said, this isn’t Jones’ first time on the network, he once was a correspondent on the Rick Mercer Report, before MTV Canada launched.

Auditions for Over the Rainbow start at the beginning of June, all across Canada.

Another MTV Canada alumni received more good news last week, when it was announced that Jessi Cruikshank (The Hills Aftershow), will be joining The CW reality competition called “Oh Sit.” The show, wait for it, is about musical chairs. Yup, Cruikshank will join Jamie Kennedy as Wipeout-style hosts that sees 12 contestants race through physically challenges in an obstacle course-style eliminations, as they each compete to claim a chair. I think this means that TV has officially run out of ideas, but it does sound kinda funny.

This is great news for Jessi who moved to LA quite a while ago and besides popping up on eTalk every now and then, still hasn’t managed to transfer her Canadian success into US currency. It looks like that has all changed now.

Oh Sit premieres this summer.

It’s my 30th birthday. Wow, I can’t believe I just typed that. Not to seem clichéd, but where did my twenties go? Right now, they seem like a blurry mix of Mike’s Hard Lemonade and Now CD compilations.

So, now, I’m thirty.

You know, if I think about it, things are pretty good right now. So I don’t think I’m going to be one of those people who sits home alone tonight and drowns my sorrows in ice cream. That being said, I am having a Deep and Delicious Cake-themed party on Saturday, but at least that will be with friends.

I could be bummed that the sales clerk at the Bay told me I should start using age fitness moisturizer, or that I’m fairly certain the next time I go shopping at H&M, I’ll have to buy a medium. But all in I really don’t have anything to be worried about.

I got asked the other day, if I was feeling anxious about getting older, you know, hitting my dirty thirties. To be honest, I hadn’t really thought about getting older, but what I did start thinking about is how the people around me are getting older. I’m lucky enough to still have my two grannies, my parents, my family. When it comes to a full life, I’ve been pretty lucky.

Earlier this year, I was hit with a dose of reality when one of my friends died in an accident. He was about to turn 28 years old and lived more than anyone I’ll likely ever meet. Helping his friends and family, as we grieved together, has certainly given today perspective. And while I’d give anything to have him back, the lessons I learned over the past four months will make today and every day of the next decade ones that I’ll never forget.

Okay, so that’s my birthday post. I probably should have included a few jokes about Danger Bay or Degrassi, but there’s always time for that. As always, I’m forever grateful that you choose to swing by this blog every now and again, it’s fun to talk about all things Canadian entertainment with you guys and you know what, that’s a pretty cool birthday gift, no matter what age.

Alright, I can’t let you go without playing some of my favourite songs of all time! They are some oldies, but goodies.

I’ve seen him a couple of times live and now you will get to see him too, from the comfort of your living room.

I’m so excited to announce that John will have his own comedy special on The Comedy Network tonight! Comedy Now airs at 10:00pm and I seriously cannot wait.

I’ve always said that, to me, comedy is the hardest type of entertainment out there and not only is John making a living at it, he’s doing amazing.

Make sure you check him out!

I often tell people that having lived in Calgary for the past seven years, it actually feels like I’ve lived in two different cities. Calgary has grown and developed so much since I moved here, I sometimes have to remind myself that I’ve actually never left. That change is perhaps no more evident then in the way the city has become a bustling hub of restaurants and photo-taking foodies. More specifically, this city’s food trucks. Since launching last year, the city’s food trucks have been garnering international attention and will culminate tonight when Calgary’s meals on wheels make their debut on Food Network Canada’s food truck series Eat St.

Hosted by James Cunningham, the series travels around the world looking for the very best dishes that come from a vehicle. If you haven’t eaten from a truck before, you’re definitely missing out. Although, that being said, many don’t even come close to rivaling the tasty street meat of many Toronto vendors. What? I really like hot dogs.

When the show returns tonight and in the coming weeks, it will feature three of Calgary’s most popular trucks including Perogy Boys, Alley Burger and Fries n’ Dolls. I actually got to sample some of the Fries n’ Dolls first fries of the season yesterday morning and they were as tasty as ever. Actually, I’ve eaten at all three of these trucks and they are definitely contributing to my expanding waste line, not that I mind.

This season, the show will feature more than sixty trucks, including some from as far away as the UK. Toronto trucks will also be heavily featured this season, including Caplansky Deli Truck,

Eat St. Season 3 premieres Wednesday at 10 p.m. The second episode follows at 10:30 p.m. ET.

This Wednesday, Calgary Stampede, Tourism Calgary, and Travel Alberta will host a public White Hat Drop in three Canadian cities simultaneously, with a chance for one lucky person to win a once-in-a-century prize! Hidden inside one of 200 white hats in Olympic Plaza, Burrard Square and Dundas Square is one red envelope that will contain an unforgettable package to experience the Calgary Stampede during its Centennial Anniversary. This exciting event will take place over the city’s respective noon-hour in all three public spaces.

The VIP prize package for two people includes the following:

· Two tickets to the sold out Garth Brooks concert on July 12th.
· Two Day Thrill package for the Calgary Stampede, includes Rodeo tickets, a VIP behind the scenes chuckwagon experience, evening show and more.
· A $250 gift card to get officially outfitted at Lammle’s Western Wear & Tack.
· A Stampede dining experience featuring chef Paul Rogalski at Rouge Restaurant, one of only 2 restaurants in Canada to receive the top 100 restaurant rating in the world by San Pellegrino.
· Cocktails and tapas at one of Calgary’s newest and most coveted restaurants, Ox & Angela.
· A look into Calgary outside of the Stampede gates, with passes to: Glenbow Museum, Calgary Tower, and the Calgary Zoo.

If you want to win these hats, here’s what you have to know. (Times are respective of each time zone.)

11:30 a.m. – 200 wristbands to be distributed to the first 200 people. Participants will line up behind one of four designated entrances.

12:30 p.m. - 20 participants at a time will get access to the designated area and will have 30 seconds to choose one white hat to stand beside.

12:35 p.m. All participants simultaneously uncover chosen hat to discover if they have won the red envelope.

I won’t be trying to get a hat, because this all sounds too stressful for my anxiety riddled mind. But I’ll definitely go check it out! Who’s going to try and get the sweet tickets?

Last week CTV announced that they would soon be airing the final season of Flashpoint, which will inevitably leave a giant Canadian content-esque hole in their schedule. Well, fear not lovers of Canadian entertainment, Saving Hope is coming to, well, save the day…maybe.

Take a look at the first look of the ambitious new medical series:

Here’s the official synopsis:
When charismatic Chief of Surgery Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks, STARGATE SG-1) at Torontos Hope-Zion Hospital ends up in a coma, he leaves the hospital in chaos and his fiancée and fellow surgeon, Alex Reid (Erica Durance, Smallville) in a state of shock. Along with newly-arrived star surgeon, Joel Goran (Daniel Gillies, The Vampire Diaries), Alex races to save Harris life. As the action unfolds, comatose Dr. Harris wanders the halls of Hope-Zee in spirit form, not sure if hes a ghost or a figment of his own imagination. Reid, along with her fellow doctors, press on to save his life and those of their other patients, as they deal with the complicated and courageous decisions that are made in their daily struggle to keep hope alive.

All 13 episodes of Saving Hope will be a co-broadcast with NBC, which as we know has had varying results: The Listener (Boo), Rookie Blue (Yay!)

Both CTV and NBC probably wouldn’t mind a big summer hit and I think if it can differentiate itself from Grey’s Anatomy, it could stand a shot. If you think about it, there are not too many medical shows on network television right now, although last year’s Combat Hospital never saw a second season.

My fingers are crossed that the show will live a long live, what do you think?

To celebrate the day, I’ve already gone for a bike ride and I dedicated my Metro column to explaining why biking is probably the easiest and most fun you could do!

Please note: In the column, I referred to myself as having a quarter-life crisis. The paper changed it to mid-life. The correction is sorely noted.
