Everything you need to know about Alberta’s first nordic spa!

Feb 25, 2018

On March 2nd, Alberta will be getting its first nordic spa and it’s going to be amazing.

A few days ago, I got a press preview (okay, I may have dipped my toes in a few of the pools too) and I think people are really going to love it.  I’ve actually never been to a nordic spa before, but their growing popularity in Canada is hard to ignore. I’m actually surprised there wasn’t one in Alberta before now, but I think you’ll see this one is worth the wait.

The spa spans 50,000 sq. feet of indoor and outdoor space and is instantly impressive.  The way the spa is moulded into its rocky mountains setting is thoughtful and beautiful.  And as you’re sitting in one of the many pools, surrounded by big mountains, beautiful skies and green forests, you’ll realize you’re truly enjoying something special.

So ahead of the spa’s opening, here’s the answers to your most pressing questions:

Where is it?

Kananaskis Nordic Spa is located at the newly renovated Delta Hotels by Marriott Kananaskis Lodge.  The relaxation lodge is about a thirty second walk from the hotel’s front desk. So that means that once your park your car, you could realistically be enjoying the spa in a matter of minutes. And the fact that it’s just an hour from downtown Calgary is just icing on the cake.

What’s in the spa?

The Kananaskis Nordic spa will eventually feature: A Relaxation Lodge, five outdoor pools, five sauna and steam cabins, exfoliation room, salt-water float pool, outdoor heated hammocks, fireside lounges, a meditation labyrinth, heated lounge chairs with personal music stations, dream lounge and a 30-person yoga studio complete with silk yoga hammocks. When it first opens, so too will four of the five pools, saunas and steam cabins, with other features opening throughout the next couple of weeks and months, with a goal of fully opening this summer!

Sorry, did you say saunas? Like plural?

Yup! There will be three different sauna types: Barrel Sauna, Banya Sauna and Finnish Sauna, and a Eucalyptus & Alchemist Steam Cabin infused with select aromatherapy oils. I got to try this one, and  when you get a little too warm, there’s a bucket of cold water ready to pour and cool you down. I’m probably most excited for the The Exfoliation Cabin –a space inspired by the traditional Turkish Hammam –will house a selection of salts for self-exfoliation of the skin.

Are there any treatments available?

Yes!  Deep tissue, relaxation and hot stone massages will all available in the treatment rooms, which overlook the rocky mountains. A perfect setting to relax and enjoy a massage.

How much is it?

A day at the spa will cost $70 and you can stay from open to close.

What if I get hungry?

I’m literally always hungry, so I get it. The Two Trees Bistro, located on the main level of the Spa Lodge, has everything you need to enjoy a healthy bite or savour a post-hydrotherapy tea, fresh juice or glass of wine.

So what do you think? Are you excited?  I’m already planning a day on the slops at Ski Nakiska, and being sure to leave plenty of time for a warm soak after a day on the slopes!
