5 Steps to becoming the next Muchmusic VJ!

>

Tomorrow morning, Muchmusic is holding an open casting call in hopes of finding their newest VJ. You can expect that come Saturday morning, hundreds of aspiring VJs will be lined-up at MuchMusic headquarters in an effort to snag one of the coolest jobs in Canada.
With so many actors, models and music-lovers auditing, how do you make you, yourself stand out at the auditions?
To find out, I went straight to the source: MuchMusic’s newest VJ Liz Trinnear. As the new girl on the block, her auditioning experience is still fresh in her mind, “I know exactly how you feel, I’ve been there recently but trust me…the job is worth the nervous stomach!” So how did Liz do it? Here are her five tips for a successful audition!

1. Embrace a mistake and move forward.
The producers understand you are human and can fumble, mix up words or make mistakes. Penelope Cruz in Vanilla Sky says ” every passing second is a chance to turn it all around.” It’s true. Move forward, and keep your chin up!

2. Have fun and be positive.
If you don’t get the gig, keep trying. There’s always next time and any interview or audition is great practice for next time!

3. Prepare, don’t memorize.
Know what you are talking about but don’t memorize a script. THEY KNOW! Just know your talking points and talk as if you were speaking to your peers.

4. Be confident not cocky.
You need to believe in yourself before anyone else can believe in you, but be careful not to be overly confident. You may come off as a know it all, and they’re no fun to work with.

5. Be honest and BE YOURSELF.
There is nothing worse than putting on a facade so you can land the gig. Producers want to know what YOU are all about, not what yare tyring to be. They will see through it.

Muchmusic is looking for you!

>
MuchMusic is hiring ANOTHER VJ!

Hopefully it is not to replace the station’s newest VJ Liz Trinnear, because I sorta think she’s doing awesome. If I had to guess, Sarah and Devon have both been there since 2004, so it wouldn’t be shocking if either of them were getting ready to go.
This Saturday, the nation’s music station is holding Open Auditions at their head-quarters in Toronto. If you are over 18-years old and love music, pop culture and think Justin Bieber looks like a lesbian, than you should totally audition. Okay, I added the last one.
Audition Details:
Saturday, April 10th
10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
299 Queen St. West
Me? I’m still waiting for MTV. Since launching four years ago, MTV Canada has only brought on one new personality. Surely they are going to be looking soon, right? RIGHT?!?

Interview: Newest VJ Liz Trinnear

>

Seven days ago Liz Trinnear‘s life changed forever.

That is because, last Friday, the 21-year-old London, Ontario, native became the envy of the thousands of Canadians, by winning the MuchMusic VJ search.

From early on, it was easy to tell that she would be hard to beat. She’s stylish, relatable, talented, kinda-nerdy and knows her music. Already industry insiders are saying that Liz’s win marks a bold step forward for Muchmusic: To be cool again.

I got a chance to interview Liz this week about what it was like winning, especially as the first girl ever to do so! I was also curious whether or not she was going to be able to handle being an instant celebrity herself, and what was her plan in case she didn’t win.
Describe the five minutes leading up to you winning the VJ Search.

The entire day was a blur. It was so nerve-racking that it became surreal and it didn’t register until we walked down to make-up and then it clicked, “this is happening. I either walk out of here with a new career start or go back to school and move on to future endeavors.” I re-watched the episode and all my nervous feelings came rushing back, even though this time I knew the outcome. I had intense butterflies in my stomach during the show, and I remember staring at the floor while repeating “please say Liz, please say Liz” to keep from falling over.
You are the first girl to ever win the VJ search, do you feel extra pressure to represent all the girls who watch Much?
It’s quite crazy when you put it in those terms. It’s a weird feeling. No matter who won this competition, male or female, the pressure remains the same to do your best and put your best foot forward. For me, I am just like any other kid. I have lived through high school and gone through the normal day to day challenges that teenagers deal with. My life experiences have made me who I am today and have got me this far. The pressure for me is to stay true to myself on screen and off screen. If anything, winning this competition should be an inspiration for teens to just chase their dreams.
You got to work with past winners like Devon and Tim, what kind of advice did they have for you as a contestant.
Both of them gave me excellent advice throughout the entire week. They agreed that it’s important to stay yourself, have fun and work hard. Devon noted that “regardless of who wins, this is a huge accomplishment to make it this far.” He also said that we should take a moment to sit back acknowledge how far we had come and that this is not the end, only a new beginning. Tim’s expertise helped it came to my nerves with his little tips and tricks on calming the mind and staying focused. They’ve both been in our shoes before so it was comforting to hear they went through the same things as we did.
How integral was the use of social media to you winning?
For me social networking platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube all played a major role in connecting with MuchMusic’s audience and fans. We are living in a digital era and social media was essential in showing MuchMusic that we were received and liked by the audience. On a personal level, these networking sites and fan forums helped keep my thoughts positive. When you get home from a day of competing and you open your inbox and see someone from across the country, that I would never normally have the chance to talk to, is interacting with you – that means a lot. Their kind words of encouragement make your day, and keep your ambitions high. I am a huge fan of Twitter and Facebook so it was great to focus on a competition that was “with it” and very relatable to today’s youth.
Did you have a plan of action in case you didn’t win?
I had a back-up plan all along because honestly, I was never fully confident that I would be the next VJ. My competitors each had a lot to offer. It’s important to stay optimistic but realistic at the same time. Needless to say I am beyond stoked that I can live the dream of being a VJ. For me, this is a new learning platform that I am thrilled to indulge myself in.
The Muchmusic VJs have always become celebrities in their own right, are you looking forward to that aspect of the job?
You know, I absolutely love what MuchMusic has to offer. A career with music and pop culture surrounding you at all times, is my dream. I know with this job, comes a lot of responsibility and “limelight” that I am not used to. However, I plan to remain myself and remain grounded by my friends and family. It’s surreal when people ask for my picture or autograph. In my head I’m still the same person and not a “celebrity.” I’m just a kid whose fortunate enough to have a wicked job!
As the new VJ, you have are given a unique voice to talk about music. Are there any artists or bands that you think all Canadians must know about?
One thing I love most about Canada is our music scene. I follow many local acts and think its important to support them. If I were to say a few bands off the top of my head I’d say:

And there are so many more! On that note, I always tweet about music and update my music blog on a regular basis, so I plan to keep doing that. (Follow her: I appreciate a WIDE spectrum of music and I hope I can share that love with MuchMusic fans.

*********************************************
And with those choices, none of which are in the music station’s rotation, I think we can all see how great Liz is going to be for MuchMusic. Let’s just hope they are ready for her!

And The VJ winner is…….

>

After months and months of looking, Muchmusic finally announced the winner of the VJ Search 2.0.
I was hoping that I would be the surprise winner even though I didn’t enter, but sadly no. The winner of the VJ search was none other than…..

Liz Trinnear!
I called it from the very first day!!!!!
Congrats liz!!!!

VJ Search: The Final Four

>
Remember the VJ Search?

Yeah, that is still going on. Who knew?
After making the brutal cut of dropping Andrew Bravener, I wasn’t sure I had much faith in the competition. But now they are down to the final four and I got to say the it’s going to be close.
The four remaining contestants have been relying on their initial audition tapes to get them through so far, but this coming Friday, they’ll have to create a MuchNews Minute segment that will air on MOD.
Then the final four will be on MOD every day next week and the winner will finally be picked on December 4th.
The four Canadians left are:
Marlon Palmer (Toronto)
Laith Hakeem (Richmond Hill)
Liz Trinnear (London)
Alli Walker (Summerside)
I would be ridiculous to not give huge props to Alli Walker for being the only person not from Ontario in the competition!!! Especially being from the Maritimes, very very cool Alli, well done.
Who is going to win?
Since Much just hired a guy VJ like three weeks ago, I have to say that Marlon and Laith probably aren’t going to make the cut. That leaves Liz and Alli, two blondes, left to fill the tiny shoes of Leah Miller.
I’ve been a Liz fan the whole time, but you gotta respect Alli for being from a super small town and still being able to create buzz for herself. Trust me, I know how hard that is.
I think I’m going to hold off making my decision between the two girls until next week. Because if anything is going to go horribly wrong, it will be next week on live tv.
Good luck!

And the new VJ is…..

>

Since muchmusic couldn’t wait for the VJ Search to finish, they went ahead and hired a another new VJ.
Just a few minutes ago, the music station just announced that the new VJ’s name is Jesse Giddings! Check out his very MM webpage!
Giddings is a long time musician, avid concert goer and social media guru (follow him on twitter) and I think MuchMusic’s demo is going to LOVE him.
Here’s why:

But Giddings won’t be the new guy for long, as the music station will be announcing the winner of the VJ search on Nov. 23!!!
This also bodes well for the four women left in the VJ search since, Gidding technically replaces Matt Babel and now they’ll be looking for someone to replace the departed Leah Miller.
What do you think of the new VJ?
I do have to give props to Out is Through who called this one weeks ago. Good scoopage Chris!

VJ Search: The Top 8 Revealed!

>
Muchmusic just announced the Top 8 Finalists for the MuchMusic VJ Search! And there were definitely some shockers!!!

Sadly, my favourite Andrew Bravener didn’t make the cut. But my other favourite Liz Trinnear is still in it, to win it!
Here are the Top 8:
Jessy Pesce, Keswick, On.
Alli Walker, Summerside, PEI.
Marlon Palmer, Toronto, ON.
Laith Hakeem, Richmond Hill, ON
Julian Koehler, Waterloo, ON
Nadine Sykora, Vancouver, BC
Kelly Peter, London,ON.
Liz Trinnear, London, ON.
That’s right, 75% of the remaining contestants can see the CN Tower from their houses. I think MuchMusic would have been smart to leave some of the out of province contestants in the running, unless they only want people from Ontario watching. Basic Media and TV Ratings 101.

VJ Search: The Top 16

>

Muchmusic just posted the Top 16 in the video search. I am surprised because the contestants found out at the exact same time as everyone else. Usually they would have contacted the Top 16, but it’s been fun to follow them on Twitter as they find out.
One of the guys I picked out of the videos, Andrew Bravener, made it and I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t go very very far! He is prime MuchMusic VJ material. I also like the look of Liz Trinnear. She seems like a suitable mash-up of Rachel Perry and Amanda Walsh.
Some of this year’s Top 16 include:
  1. Julian “Jules Mkools” Koehler (Kitchener/Waterloo, ON)
  2. Andrew Bravner (Oakville, On)
  3. Tassja Kemp-Jackson (Toronto, ON)
  4. Christina Meng (Montreal, PQ)
  5. Liz Trinnear (London, On)
  6. Lyric James (Mississauga, ON)
  7. Marlon Palmer (Toronto, ON)
  8. Jessy Pesce (Toronto, ON)
  9. Kelly Peter (London, ON)
  10. Alli Walker (Summerside, PEI)
  11. Cody Dobie (Ottawa, ON)
  12. Laith Hakeem (Richmond Hill, ON)
  13. Nadine Sykora (Vancouver, BC)
  14. Ashley Stennett (Hamilton, ON)
  15. Elma Mehmedbegovic (Edmonton, AB)
  16. Caity Babcock (Maple Ridge, BC)
It’s interesting how so many of them are from Ontario, more specifically the GTA. Eleven of the Sixteen are from Ontario! Maybe muchmusic had to cut back expenses and needed people to live closer. I guess they’ll save on lodging and moving expenses.
