Canada is officially Virgin-free

It’s turning out to be a bad year for festivals.

Lilith Fair is still struggling to sell tickets and now comes word that Virgin Fest will be cancelling all of it’s Canadian summer tours!

I didn’t even know they were planning summer dates.

“We’re taking the year off” said Virgin Mobile Canada Chief Marketing Officer Nathan Rosenberg earlier this week.  Which is no doubt a relief to media, who now no longer have to type his ridiculously long job title.

I checked out the tour last year when it was in Calgary.  Despite it being extremeley lopsided (Pearl Jam one night, Billy Talent the next), it was a great event.  I also loved how so many canadian musicians were featured, even if most fans were there for the often american headliners.

So with Lilith not “fairing” well and Virgin lost, what does that leave us with?  Warped?

Fuck.

The Great Great Bloomers

>
I’ve never really known what my purpose is life was. Was it to take over for Ryan Seacrest? Become a hoarder of Entertainment Weekly magazines? Aerospace Engineer?

I was all over the map.
That was until this weekend when I heard a new band at VirginFest. It was then I realized that my mission in life was clear. I am here on this earth solely to let everyone know about the amazing Canadian band, The Great Bloomers.
How did I know about these guys until now?
To give you an idea of how surprising their set during VirginFest was, the band was able to clear the media tent, which is not an easy task when you consider how cynical we actually all are. But no one could resist catching the band with the catchy and fun songs. Their songs, from their album that was just released in April, are the kind of songs that you don’t want to finish. You feel like you can sing along almost instantly. And that’s what I did when I checked out their website all day on Monday. (So guys if you noticed a surge of about 100 in your song plays that day, it was me!)
But I’m also obsessed with Taylor Swift, so I would understand your nervousness in trusting my musical taste.
Here is another review of the band that is worth the read. It’s good to know I’m not the only ones who are enjoying the band.
Please, do yourself a favour and give The Great Bloomers a listen (and re-listen). Right now my favourite song is Catching Up but it changes on a hourly basis.

Thanks H&K

>
Just want to take a second to say thanks to everyone at Hill & Knowlton. They were in charge of all the PR at VirginFest and they pretty much treated me better than my family.

Thanks to Natalie, Abby, Erica and Kayla and everyone else at H&K that made this weekend so memorable for me!

Some day, when I have my own music festival (Hanson, Sky, Moffats, Sugar Jones, Rita McNeil and U2), I know that I’ll call on H&K Services and not be disappointed.
Thanks again everyone!

Virgin Fest: The Embarrassment

>So there I was at the VirginFest AfterParty being all hob-knobby with all the VIP people. I was probably being more of an ass than I deserved to be. Can you blame me? Afterall, I was sitting right beside the table that was occupied by members of Metric, Billy Talent and Bedouin Soundclash! Could you imagine three cooler bands sitting together? So by the meer fact that I was sitting close to thmee, I thought I was cooler. I thought I was the shit.

I thought wrong.

As they got up to leave, I quickly introduced myself to Emily from Metric. Only it turns out it wasn’t Emily from Metric. It was just someone sitting at the table. I don’t embarrass easily, but let me tell you how mortified I was. I was m.o.r.t.i.f.i.e.d. All night long I thought I was watching Emily Haines party it up, turns it out it was just a very lovely lady who happened to look like Emily.
She said she had gotten it before, but that is no excuse.

I don’t even think I’ll be able to get to bed after this one. This is like the time I threw up on a certain airlines passengers. Twice.

No more being an ass. No more hob-knobbing. I am on a canadian-celebrity detox. At least until I can correctly identify canadian celebrities.

Bad Blogger, Bad!

Virgin Fest Day 2

>
Back on the grounds and I will updating about different stuff going on on the grounds today. I’m expecting a smaller crowd today because Pearl Jam isn’t playing, but should still be fun.

2:34pm I know a lot of people just got their tickets for PJ, so Sunday tickets are on sale all over the place.
Here is my favorite ad currently on Craigslist:
“I offer one ticket for Virgin Fest on Sunday (Calgary) in exchange for 1 coffee from Caffe Artigiano. Pick up only in Eau Claire (2 blocks from Caffe Artigiano). Email: vicgalla@hotmail.com Email if interested and leave a phone number. I know Billy talent is worth a 7-Eleven or a McDonald’s cup of coffee, but Metric is decent. “

2:45pm The recycle depot had one person bring in 500 bottles last night and got a free virgin phone. They are expecting two more today. I’m surprised there aren’t more, there are cans and bottles EVERYWHERE.
2:50pm Just talked to concert-goer Hussain, who was one of the crowd-surfers from last night. He said he is surprised there isn’t free water for everyone and I sorta have to agree. Water is at a premium on the hill today.
2:53pm It is a LOT hotter here today than yesterday. Looks like there might a storm or two in the air.
3:00pm Social Code is just wrapping their set. They’ve play at least three covers, seems like an odd thing to do when you have the Virgin Stage to yourself….
3:17pm I just went and checked out this really cool mural project. It’s being completed by Tommy Matejka and it’s a traveling piece of work. He is actually going around with VirginFest all across canada and works on it more and more at each stop.
3:35pm Autograph times. Michael Bernard Fitzgerald 4:30, White Lies 5pm, Tokyo Police Club 6:30pm, Shout Out Out Out 8:30pm
3:43pm Waiting for the White Lies to start. The buzz around these guys is insane!
4:00pm Apparently the White Lies are not the Killers. Could have fooled me.
4:05pm Michael Bernard Fitzgerald is easily pulling the biggest crowd at the secondary CJAY crowd. It’s a shame that that stage is a beer garden, because there are about 100 teenagers forced to watch from a far.

5:35pm. I am a bad blogger. I abandoned the blog and twitter to sit and enjoy Tokyo Police Club. That is the first time I have abandoned the blog in three years. New fan alert.

5:44pm: Taking precaustions with the looming raining clouds. The remaining two acts, metric and billy talent have been moved by 15 minutes.

6:00pm Waiting to go down and take Metric pictures. Very excited. Love.This.Band.
6:44pm The crowd, of mostly tweens, are intense. They are crowd surfing and throwing themselves all over the place. Intense.
7:00pm As expected Metric continued to be one of the most original and exciting acts in the industry right now.

8:00pm A couple of minutes late and Billy Talent takes the stage. A completely different crowd than for Pearl Jam. Luckily a little more subdued.

8:05pm I once served the members of Billy Talent Lobsters and made them wear bibs. Ahh part-time jbos.

Live Blog: Virgin Fest

>

ToThis weekend Calgary is finally playing host to the much rumored VirginFest. Some of the acts this weekend include Metric, Wintersleep, K-OS Thunderheist and a little band called Pearl Jam!

I’m going to be back stage all weekend weekend long chilling with the bands and checking out the shows. My goal is come up w
ith cooler words to use than “chilling” and “checking out”. Come back all weekend long to get all the sites and the sounds!
12:23pm: The gates are about to open and this will probably the only the time there won’t be a line for beer. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
12:32pm: There are no bad seats. The ampitheatre is great idea.
12:34pm: Lots to do besides l
isten to music. Massages, Pole Dancing, Xbox’s oh my! What kind of virgins are they looking for?
12:38pm: Bring 500 bottles to the recycle booth and get a free Virgin phone!
12:40 pm: Bacardi is going
completely green. They even have a solar-paneled Giant Lite Brit! Put your empty bottles into and it will turn in
to a giant message!

12:52pm: LOVE the Silencer Booth. I’ll be using that later!

1:21pm: Gates are open. People are streaming in already claiming their spots for Pearl Jam….in seven hours.
1:31pm : Autograph Sessions (they’ll sign ANYTHING you want!) Mother, Mother-3:10pm, ThunderHeist-4:00pm, The Cliks-6pm
1:39pm: The Great Bloomers have
taken to the stage early! Great start.
2:00pm: If there is a cooler VirginFest in Canada, I haven’t seen it. Although walking up the hill with the cast on is killer
2:15pm Another great band, Mother, Mother has taken the stage.
2:34pm: Nothing, I mean nothing makes me more nervous than slanted porta potty.

3:36 pm: Came back from some serious dancing with Thundertheist. Another great canadian band I hardly knew anything about!
3:38pm: Would the lead singer of Thunderheist be offended if I forced her to eat?

3:40pm. Combined these two people have seen Pearl Jam 35 times.
3:53pm -I just ate the GROSSEST pizza of my life. Fail Pizza 73, Fail indeed.
3:54pm I keep forgetting about the CJAY tent. Listening to Static in the Stars as I type.
4:15pm: The Arkells are now on the stage. They aren’t wowing me, but still pretty solid.
4:28pm I need a power nap.
TWO HOUR BREAK
6:15pm I just walked around the entire ground and now I am a gross, gross sweaty mess. BUT I just had a great Bacardi Breezer! Now the day is getting better…and cooler.
6:42pm The site is PACKED and more people are still coming. Lines are long and I think people are starting to get restless.
6:50pm I totally wouldn’t mind a little rain shower.
7:19pm The progression of the Bacardi Lite Brite.
7:22pm The crowd is building and getting pumped. I’m heading to the VIP section.

8:00pm Pearl Jam has taken the stage (on time!) and the audience is going nuts. I am happy to be far, far away from the first few rows.
8:30pm Eddie Vedder keeps stopping to make sure the audience is safe. I don’t know if I can say that he is a sweet man. But yeah, he is is a sweet man.

8:52pm Got a text from the Pearl Jam super fan in the front row. Too nuts for him. He moved back and gave up his spot.
9:00pm: To a dad holding up his son for two hours. Eddie Vedder: “Hey Kid, You Got A Good Dad.”
9:24pm The bathrooms are disgusting. Like Biggest Loser Contestants naked disgusting.
9:28pm Left un-attended the Bacardi Brite Lite has turned into a giant penis.

….the next morning.

12:27pm (Sunday). The problem with Live Blogging an amazing festival is that at some point, you want to put the computer down and just enjoy yourself. So that’s what I did. Of course the drink tickets I found on the ground helped, but I was having a great time anyway.

I’m hearing a lot of positive things from the Virgin Fest grounds the morning after. People seemed to have a really great time. I did hear however the the shuttles home were a nightmare and so was walking up a hill that was used for winter olympics to get to the parking lot.

Part two
of the festival is today. I’m not expecting the same crowds as yesterday. Call me crazy but I don’t think Billy Talent and Metric have the same pull as Pearl Jam! Which I have learned you always have to type with an exclamation point.

If this blog wasn’t enough, here are some reviews of the first day of the Festival. One from Lisa Wilton from the Calgary Sun and another from Heath McCoy from the Calgary Herald.

Are you ready to do it all again? Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate.

My Kind of Virgin!

>
I’m getting more and more excited for my very first VirginFest. By all accounts it’s going to be a pretty cool time and I’m not just talking about the bands and acts on stage.

Some of the things going in and around the grounds are going to make the two day festival seem great, even during the boring artists that no ones even heard of.
Some of the stuff I’m looking forward to include:
  • Get your zen on – Tired music lovers can relax with a Thai massage in the Vendor Village.
  • The Virgin Mobile Autograph Tent and take home a little signed souvenir to show off. (I’m not a fan of signatures though, it’s all about the photo!
  • Swag for trash! – Bring in as many water bottles as you can from around the festival site and trade them in for some awesome stuff like a bottle of glacéau vitaminwater™, a festival merchandise coupon or even a Virgin Mobile phone! ·
  • There will also be a ton of Art exhibits all around the grounds, burlesque pole dancing lessons and a Virgin Mobile Silencer Booth. I assume they don’t mean the guns….

VirginFest Preview: Metric Interview

>Only four more sleeps until Virgin Music Fest is here in Calgary!

One of the bands I’m looking forward to the most is Metric.  My pals over at Ronatron just did a great interview with Emily Haines, who is the lead singer of the band.
Great stuff.  I’d love to get an interview with her too, but to be honest, I’m terrified of Haines.  She intimidates the hell out of me, almost the same way that  Oh well…maybe someday.  Until then, I’ll let Ron do the interviewing.

VirginFest for cheap!

Thanks Linds! (and pimple face kid!)

The VirginFest line up was JUST announced.

And do you know what?  It’s not that bad.
So far it includes:
Pearl Jam, Billy Talent, Metric, Tokyo Police Club, Arkells, K-OS, Mother Mother and there will be others announced along the way!
