My thoughts: Taylor Swift!

Do you know what?  I love Taylor Swift.  I don’t care if you just rolled your eyes all the way to back to your neck. I think she’s an awesome example for teenagers and gosh darnit, she writes catchy freakin’ songs!  It’s been two years since I saw her in concert at the Calgary Stampede and I still talk about the show as one of the most enjoyable concerts I’ve ever seen.  Is she technically perfect?  Probably not.  Does she have a ton of fun, write relatable songs and still manages to not become a Hollywood mess?  Yup.  So far so good.

Taylor Swift appeared at MuchMusic on Thursday night to talk about her new album and as always, she took time to chill out with her fans.  The above picture is the one that MuchMusic sent out to media and it definitely gave me a chuckle.  I saw it and immediately thought, “Was it also a Taylor Swift lookalike contest?”

I love the girl immediately behind Taylor on her left. Seriously, when was the last time you were THAT happy?  I love it.  I need to do something this weekend that will make me that happy.  Any suggestions?

Taylor Swift to visit PEI!

>
Yes, it is still winter. But that doesn’t mean it is too early to start planning your summer vacation. And if you are a girl, a really confident guy or somewhere in between, you might want to head to Cavendish Beach, PEI this summer.

It was just announced that a little country superstar by the name of Taylor Swift will be performing at this year’s Cavendish Beach Music Festival!

The festival runs from July 7-11th and will also be featuring Keith Urban and Lady Antebellum

Passes for the whole festival are only $235 and go on sale this weekend. Or you can buy tickets for just Taylor’s show for only $79. That’s pretty great considering how quickly the show will obviously sell out! If you haven’t seen Taylor before, she’s pretty great. (click here for my review)

If you’ve never been to Cavendish before, it is absolutely beautiful. The ocean is perfect, the sand is glorious and the sun is so warm. Plus if you have some time, you can go to the beach and look for my mom’s wedding ring, she lost it on her honeymoon thirty seven years ago. (Yes, my mom was four when she got hitched.)

Taylor Swift: Back For More

>

Without a doubt Taylor Swift is one of the smartest and nicest people working in the biz right now. Especially when you consider that she is only 19 years-old.

I say she is smart because she knows that she wouldn’t be anywhere without her fans. I say she is nice because she is coming back to Canada!

Even though she just came through here a couple of months ago, she is coming back in the new year. If you can sell out a stadium once, chances are you can do it again. And I’m sure it has nothing to do with the increase in her popularity since the only “kanye incident.” Right….

Right now she has only added two Canadian cities, but I’m guessing she’ll add more.

The canadian dates include:
May 20th- Ottawa
May 21st and 22nd- Toronto

Kanye: douchiest of douches?

>

Unless you got a thick skin, don’t even think about watching Kanye West diss Taylor Swift at the VMAs. It is heartbreaking. The show is still going on, but hopefully she’ll get a chance to finish her speech.

Your move Beyonce.

I also just remembered that Kanye West is announcing a tour with Lady Gaga monday morning, what’s the chances he did all of this, just so we’d start talking about him again. Dammit, I hate falling for a publicists tricks.

Kanye is also booked for the first episode of The Jay Leno show. It’s all making sense now…

Later on in the night, Kanye took to his blog to apologize:

Regardless of who he thought should win, the point remains, he only did it because he knew Taylor would just sit their and take it. Little does he know, Swift also writes songs about the all the guys that wrong her. You’ll get yours Kanye.

UPDATE: Even fellow nominee, Kelly Clarkson is weighing in on Kanye’s actions. Check out what she just posted to her blog. Although, you should know, that I really don’t think she would write like this. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a hacker and it will probably be pulled down sooner, rather than later.
“Dear Kanye, What happened to you as a child?? Did you not get hugged enough?? Something must have happened to make you this way and I think we’re all just curious as to what would make a grown man go on national television and make a talented artist, let alone teenager, feel like shit. I mean, I’ve seen you do some pretty shitty things, but you just keep amazing me with your tactless, asshole ways. It’s absolutely fascinating how much I don’t like you. I like everyone. I even like my asshole ex that cheated on me over you…which is pretty odd since I don’t even personally know you.

The best part of this evening is that you weren’t even up for THIS award and yet you still have a problem with the outcome. Is winning a moon man that much of a life goal?? You can have mine if it will shut you up. Is it that important, really??

I was actually nominated in the same category that Taylor won and I was excited for her…so why can’t you be?? I’m not even mad at you for being an asshole…I just pity you because you’re a sad human being. On a side note, Beyonce has always been a class act and proved again tonight that she still is. Go TEXAS!! Taylor Swift, you outsell him ….that’s why he’s bitter. You know I love your work! Keep it up girl!”

The Great Great Bloomers

>
I’ve never really known what my purpose is life was. Was it to take over for Ryan Seacrest? Become a hoarder of Entertainment Weekly magazines? Aerospace Engineer?

I was all over the map.
That was until this weekend when I heard a new band at VirginFest. It was then I realized that my mission in life was clear. I am here on this earth solely to let everyone know about the amazing Canadian band, The Great Bloomers.
How did I know about these guys until now?
To give you an idea of how surprising their set during VirginFest was, the band was able to clear the media tent, which is not an easy task when you consider how cynical we actually all are. But no one could resist catching the band with the catchy and fun songs. Their songs, from their album that was just released in April, are the kind of songs that you don’t want to finish. You feel like you can sing along almost instantly. And that’s what I did when I checked out their website all day on Monday. (So guys if you noticed a surge of about 100 in your song plays that day, it was me!)
But I’m also obsessed with Taylor Swift, so I would understand your nervousness in trusting my musical taste.
Here is another review of the band that is worth the read. It’s good to know I’m not the only ones who are enjoying the band.
Please, do yourself a favour and give The Great Bloomers a listen (and re-listen). Right now my favourite song is Catching Up but it changes on a hourly basis.

Concert Review: Taylor Swift

>

I’ve always said that, given the chance, I would never return to high school.
Well tonight at the sold out Taylor Swift concert in Calgary, I was reminded, very specifically, why. All the drama, the tears, the tests and pimples. It was all too much. But now I can safely say that after spending two musical hours in the head of the teen country superstar, that I need to book a therapist for both me and Swift. But regardless of the awful high school memories her songs dug up, I have to say that despite my best efforts, the concert was able have me on my feet singing and dancing.
And yes, I understand that by saying that I thought Swift’s concert was impressive, I am essentially putting into question my credibility as a entertainment writer. But maybe we should all put our Polaris-loving music libraries aside every once and a while and enjoy some really great pop-music. Would that be the worst thing in the world? After all, I’m pretty sure even Patrick Watson has had “Love Story” stuck in his head at least once.

Recently, the pop-music label has become just as dangerous as eating food at the Calgary Stampede, but like all Calgarians say, just because it isn’t good for you, doesn’t mean you can’t secretly love it.
And for just under two hours, I secretly loved Taylor Swift. During her show, she sang pretty much her entire music catalogue and even added Justin Timberlake’s “What Goes Around” to the set list. For anyone that has ever seen a Taylor Swift video or performance at an awards show, there was nothing really new. She played the band geek for “You Belong With Me”, dressed up as Juliet for the aforementioned “Love Story” and even had the rain come pouring down on her for the “Should Have No Finale”. But the thousands tween fans, moms and approximately five males in attendance couldn’t have cared less. They loved every second of i
t. At one point, after singing her first hit “Tim McGraw“, the audience gave her a three minute standing ovation. She stood practically stunned and in awe of the reception. And then when the crowd finally quieted down she said: “I will never in my life forget that moment.”
A Taylor Swift concert isn’t just about her belting out tunes and the audience applauding how great she is. The show reminded her fans, even the most cynical ones, that she is just as humble as she has always seemed. She is as nice as her songs imply and even when she tries to play mean, it’s still laughably tolerant. Twice during the show she took time to get up close and personal with the screaming fans all around the stadium. She’d stop for photos or hugs, even giving them jewelry right off of her costumes, (I’m expecting an announcement of a jewelry line any day now.)
The concert for me was a reminder. A reminder that I don’t always have to talk like I listen to CBC Radio 3 all the time. Or pretend that I own more than two albums off of the Polaris short list. Sometimes it’s okay to love really good pop music, it’s okay to admit that you know most of the words to even the cheesiest love songs. And sometimes it’s even okay to say that you really enjoyed the Taylor Swift concert. Even if you really (secretly) thought it was one of the best concerts you’ve ever seen.
All the pictures were taken by me! Feel free to send a better camera!

Taylor Swift hits Calgary!

>
Um….I have a little bit of an announcement to make……

I’M GOING TO TAYLOR SWIFT TONIGHT!!!!
More importantly I’M NOT EMBARRASSED ABOUT IT!
I know none of you are going to be able to go on living until you read a review of the sold out Calgary show, so I’ll be sure to post it as soon as get home.
Can’t freaking wait!
Oh did I mention that crazy country girl Kellie Pickler is opening for her? I literally think I will turn into a crying girl during said show.
Again….can’t freaking wait!

Taylor Swift Raps!

>I have never been embarassed about my strong like of all things Taylor Swift.

I missed the Miley, Jonas and Twilight train. But the Taylor Swift train? Yeah, I’m the conductor.
She currently doing her north american tour and tonight at CMT the she picked up two awards for Video of the Year and Female Video of the Year. She also did a hilarious video called Thug Story with Lil’Wayne, yes that Lil’ Wayne. And while it’s not Natalie Portman rapping, it’s pretty fun none the less.
All aboard the Taylor Swift train!

Sing in your way into Calgary Stampede

>Are you the next Taylor Swift?

Want to be known at this year’s Calgary Stampede for different reasons than throwing up on a child and trying to ride a bull?

Why not try to become the star of the Calgary Stampede? Nashville North Star!

(maritimers will appreciated the name of the contest is the same name as a certain bar in Fredericton)
If you think you can sing your country heart out, then you can submit a video on Youtube.  It has to be of you singing your favorite country song, whether it’s a cappella, with a guitar or even with a band.  May I suggest: Did I Shave My Legs For This?

Country 105 will select the top 10 videos submitted to YouTube and invite the performers down to Nashville North to sing one song during Stampede.  Then six are chosen for the final round.

The winner gets $1,000 cash along with two Platinum Rodeo Tickets for the Calgary Stampede Rodeo Finals, plus a $200 gift certificate to Lammles.  There is however no prize for crazy stage moms, so move along mom.

Anyone wishing to enter can visit Country 105‘s website to learn how to submit their video for the contest. Deadline to submit is June 26.

And remember, if you win, just be sure not to Mindy McCready yourself.  Keep it sane people, keep it sane.

But would you do it?

>
By far the hottest ticket in Calgary right now is tickets to the playoffs which starts game 3 tonight in cowtown.

woah, that is probably the most sports talk I’ve ever had on this blog. It’s like I’m TSN now or something. I even impressed myself.

Anyway, anyone that is anyone was trying to get tickets to the big showdown tonight. Now I can’t confirm this but I’m fairly certain most people would give up a child (probably the one with the lazy eye) to go to the game tonight. But sadly many Calgarians will be watching the game from home or in a bar. (I will be at Monsters vs. Aliens)

Needless to say, you would have to be an idiot to give up tickets. Or would you would have to be really freaking cool?

If you are the ladder, that’s where Kids Up Front steps in.

Kids Up Front is a charity that I’ve talked about quite a bit on this very blog. (I gave them two Gwen Stefani tickets back in 2007.) They are an amazing organization that gives tickets to kids that wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to experience concerts, shows or hockey games. All you gotta do is go to their office and drop off the tickets. Then they work with over 150 different organizations in Calgary to find a child to give them to.

The Calgary Flames organization recently gave two tickets to tonight’s game away, click here to read the story.

Such a cool thing.
So if you are one of lucky people who have tickets to the flames games or the upcoming sold out Taylor Swift show, maybe you should think about helping a kid out. Chances are, this isn’t your first NHL hockey game, nor will it be your last. That probably can’t be said for the kid.

Think about it.
Kids Up Front has offices in Edmonton, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. They also work at the national level helping children all over Canada.
