Quick Question: SYTYCDC

Is So You Think You Can Dance Canada still on?

I know the show started a couple of weeks ago, but since then I haven’t heard a thing about it.  Is anyone watching?  Should I be?

Also, wouldn’t it be great if CTV alternated seasons of SYTYCDC and Canadian Idol?  I miss Sass Jordan more than I excted.

Canada's Best Dance Crew?!

>
Some people just can’t get enough of dancing reality shows!

So You Think You Can Dance Canada Season 1 finalist Vincent Noiseux and Season 2 finalist Nicolas Begin have made it to the finals of Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew.

Their crew, called Blueprint Cru, hail from Montreal and have already made history as the first-ever foreign crew to compete on RJPABDC!

The finale airs tonight and the Canadian dancers will now face-off with fellow finalists Poreotix to find out if they will take the $100,000 grand prize back to Canada.

Vincent Noiseux advanced to the Season 1 Top 8 on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, while Begin made it to Season 2′s Top 16.

I haven’t been watching this season, but taking a look at one of their videos, it is hard to imagine these guys not winning!

Interview: SYTYCDC's Blake McGrath

>

What were you doing when you were 19 years old? Blake McGrath was dancing for Britney Spears.

If you’ve watched a dance show in the past five years, chances are you’ve seen Blake. Whether it was on the awesome and under-appreciated MTV reality show DanceLife, or on both the American and Canadian editions of So You Think You Can Dance. (He actually finished in the Top 6 of the show’s first season in 2005.) It is pretty hard to ignore Blake’s presence in the new world of dance.

Before talking with him at the recent Calgary auditions for SYTYCDC, I was honestly expecting the male equivalent of a diva. McGrath is known to comfortably straddle line of confident and cocky. Which is fine because I think, if you are going to be a dancer, you have to be a little of both. “I’m so driven, if anyone told me no, I literally have to laughed it and keep going. I trained 35 hours a week, so that is a lot of training. I worked my butt off. I’m one the most driven people you’ll ever meet and if I want something bad enough, I give myself two years to accomplish it.”
But even the best dancers still get nervous, “I get nervous before I perform, but then I hit the stage and it all goes away.”
And he has a lot to be nervous about, now that he’s conquered dancing, he is moving on to singing. McGrath will be releasing his first album in September, but we can expect the first single in just a couple of weeks. “The album is pop r&b, dancy and clubby. It feels young and fresh and I’m really proud of it.” The video for his first single, will likely feature a lot of familiar faces. “If the video we did is the first single ‘Night’, Natalie, Nikko and a lot of the Top 20 are in the video as well.”

Blake says that he did that because so many of the dancers finish the show and ask, “What is next?” He advises all of them to knock on doors. And that is pretty common advise, ask anyone who has “made it” and they’ll tell you the same thing. “When I did Dancelife, we thought things were going to start falling into place. And then when they didn’t, I got really lonely and realized that I can’t wait for things to happen. You always have to be five-steps ahead of the game.”
And it seems Canadians “niceness” might actually help dancers looking for their big break. “Canadian dancers are so passionate. They are versatile. And they are nice, americans are just more cut-throat. I think it might be a quicker route to be more cut-throat, but I also don’t think it is the best route.”
Luckily for Blake, he seems to be a little of both.

Dance Calgary Dance!

>

This past weekend, I got the chance to visit a LuLu Lemon factory just minutes after it exploded!
Actually, it was the So You Think You Can Dance Canada auditions, but if you toss in some Ugg boots and stage parents, you could barely tell the difference.
While I wasn’t there to audition, I was really curious to talk to the dancers and see what it takes to win the show!
If you ever get a chance to talk to a dancer, they’ll tell you that they don’t know how to give up. That’s why so many of them that I talked to on Saturday had auditioned for the show before. If they didn’t make the cut, they’d listened to the judges, go home, practice, study and work. After all, season 2 winner Tara Jean, didn’t get pass her audition in the show’s first season. Now, twelve months later, these dancers back. And not only were so many of them ready to win SYTYCDC, they were willing to freeze to do it.
The morning of the auditions, Calgary was freezing. By the time I had gotten there, most of the dancers looked more like extras from Titanic than world-class dancers. I lasted about thirty minutes before I pulled the media card and got to go inside. Ahhh the advantages of not being a dancer!

The first four: Ashley, Laeticia, Scott and Kathy
Despite the freezing temperatures, the dancer’s spirits were infectious. Plus you’ve never met a group a people that love the camera more than these kids. They pretty much could smell the cameras. Sometimes, I felt like I was being interviewed, “Who are you?”, “Do you want our picture?”, “Where can we find it later?”
It was then I realized that these dancers were just like me, only flexible.
I also got the chance to talk to SYTYCDC judge Black McGrath and host Leah Miller. I’ll have those interviews up and ready to read on Monday and Tuesday!

Calgary: Don't miss these auditions and concerts!

>
Okay- there are tons of exciting things going on in Calgary over the next couple of days, so I’m grouping them all together. That way it makes it harder for you to ignore them….right?

(Sorry in advance for all you non-Calgarians, but maybe you can pass these events on to people you know who live here. Because let’s face it, we all know someone that lives here.)

Calgary Artists for Haitian Relief: The huge concert event is taking place tomorrow and will feature a ton of Calgary’s best musicians. Some of the acts on the bill include: Michael Bernard Fitzgerald & the Loud Love Choir along with – The Dudes, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra with Kris Demeanor, Corb Lund, Woodpigeon, The Polyjesters and Denise Clarke, Jan Lisiecki, Sheri D. Wilson, Bravo!FACTS, Cantos Music Foundation, DJ Rob Faust, and Curiously Canadian Improv.

All the money raised will got to help a Canadian-founded Haitian orphanage that was destroyed in the earthquake that devastated the country earlier this year. The orphanage – Le Foyer de Filles Chretiennes Orphanage – was founded by Frank Chauvin, a retired police detective from Windsor, in 1988.

So You Think You Can Dance Canada Auditions: The audition tour wraps up in Calgary this weekend. The last day to audition is this Saturday, March 13th at MacHall on the University of Calgary campus. I obviously won’t be auditioning, I don’t feel it would be fair, since it is so obvious that I would win. The auditions are also going to feature a special guest judge named Stacey Tookey. Click here for more information about the auditions.

Dragon’s Den Auditions
If you think you have a business idea that could benefit from the $$$ of the Dragons, then make sure you go to the auditions. They’ll be taking place on March 19th and 20th at the Carriage House Inn. Click here for details. Remember, you probably won’t be pitching for the Dragons here, but if you can make it pass the tough as nails producers, you probably got a good shot.

So You Think You Can Date!

>

Maybe CTV should get into the match-making business.
After years of Canadian Idol contestants hooking up, it seems the same is now happening on So You Think You Can Dance Canada.
In an interview with Etalk on Friday, this past season’s winner Tara-Jean confirmed that her and second place finisher Vincent Desjardins are doing the horizontal tango. Okay, technically she said: “We are together…it’s pretty official now,”
After months of being sequestered for dance – spending time together while practicing, being teamed-up as dance partners for two weeks in a row, and making the Top 2 – it soon became evident that the dancing duo shared a lot more than Salsa, Rumba, and Mambo moves!
If the two last as an item, I wonder if they’ll ask Mary Murphy to be the MC of their wedding! Hot tamale train indeed!

Why So Serious CTV?

>
I couldn’t sleep last night. I’m not really sure why, so I did what I always do when I can’t sleep, think of TV schedules. It’s like sheep, only with bad reality shows, doctors and cops.

While I was lying there it, occurred to me: Does CTV ever air comedies? Ever since Corner Gas went off the air, I can’t think of a single comedy on the network. That can’t be right can it.
I looked into and yes, technically CTV has one single show that is billed as a comedy, whether it is funny, is something different all together. The show in question is called, The Middle and it stars Everybody Loves Raymond’s Patricia Heaton.
And that’s it. That’s the only comedy on the networks entire line up! Doesn’t that seem strange?
I’m not sure if CTV has any new shows lined up for the winter, but any network that thinks Leah Miller is a good host for So You Think You Can Dance, obviously has a good sense of humor.

So Tara-Jean Thinks She Can Dance!

>
“Are they putting something in the water in Lethbridge?”

That’s the question I asked myself after Tara-Jean Popowich won So You Think You Can Dance Canada on Sunday night. This just a couple years after Lethbridge-native Theo Tams won Canadian Idol.
Let’s hope Tara-Jean doesn’t have the same luck as the not-even one hit wonder!
The national tour starts soon and auditions for the third season starts on November 14th!

SYTYDC Canada finally!

>
After months and months of advertising and teasing So You Think You Can Dance Canada finally has a premiere date! It’s this Thursday September 11th! I’m not really sure why CTV thought Thursday needed another show, but apparently they think their show can compete with shows like The Office, ER, Survivor, 30 Rock and CSI.

Will you be getting on the hot tamale train?

TV Shockers!

>
It’s only a couple of weeks until the Fall TV season starts up again and with that studios are making a whole lot of changes! People of are coming, people are going. It’s like my co-workers bedroom for god sakes. (Not an insult-more of a jealous remark)

Here is a quick re-cap:

SYTYCD- Remember last week when floppy haired Nigel implied that he wished he could get rid of Jessica and Comfort instead of Thayne? Well got his wish….sorta. Jessica and her boobs had to bow out of the competition this week because of an injury. But that means Comfort is back in, hence the previous sorta. I guess Jessica will be on the show tomorrow to say goodbye to the her fan (yes, I meant singular) and Mary’s grave-raising laugh.

CSI: It finally happened. Gil Grissom is packing his bags come mid-season. That’s right good ol’ William Peterson is wrapping up his time on TV’s #1 show CSI. He’ll stick around as excutive producer while his character is probably going to go chase down Jorja Fox, which is always the right thing to do after someone hates you so much they quit their job and move out of town. Oh well, I guess there is always Fear 2.

Friday Night Lights: When the show returns to NBC in January (and DirectTV in the Fall), it’s going to look a little different, that’s because former series regulars Scott Porter (Jason Street) and Gaius Charles (Smash) are being bumped to the sidelines. I understand demoting the Jason Street character, I feel a show about football can only include their once star quarterback so much….especially because he is now in a wheelchair. He always kinda reminded me of Duncan from Veronica Mars after we found out who killed Lily Kane. There just wasn’t a need for him any more. I do hope they follow up on him having a kid now though. I am perplexed by the loss of Brian “Smash” Williams, who always added so much intensity and risk to the show. I am however not complaining, I’m just happy to have a third season. Plus if it means we get ourselves some more Landry and Tyra, I am definitely game.
