Cory's Big Surprise!

>
The Geminis are tomorrow and I’m so excited. However, my level of excitement just jumped exponentially after reading GLEE’s Cory Monteith‘s latest Tweet:

“waiting for my flight to Calgary! If I could tell you what’s planned for the geminis’, your head would explode from excitement. Mine did!”
Do I smell a musical number with Stombo? I think I do!

Geminis Awards Will Win and Should Win #4

>

Holy Danger Bay! We are only TWO nights away from the GEMINIS! I can’t believe it’s here already!
All week long I’ve been covering the nominees and looking at who will win and who should win.
Take a minute to look at the female acting noms, male acting noms and hosting/anchoring nominations.
Let’s wrap this up this week, by looking at the best programs of the year!
Best Comedy Program or Series
Nominees:
Less Than Kind
Rick Mercer Report
Testees
This House Has 22 Minutes
Three Chords from the Truth

Will Win: Who doesn’t love Rick Mercer? I think he pretty much has it in the bag, it’s easily the most wide-reaching and funny show on Canadian Television. Less Than Kind isn’t funny, Testees and Three Chords from the Truth aren’t well-known enough and This House Has 22 Minutes is way too old.
Should Win: I think you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone that doesn’t think Rick Mercer deserves this. Unless they are the producers of the other nominated shows.
Best Dramatic Mini-Series
Nominees:
Burn Up
Diamonds
The Last Templar
XIII
Will Win: The story of Burn Up about an oil industrialist, an environmental activist and a politician that are in conflict during a climate change summit, is something that Canadians are passionate about, probably passionate enough to award it the Gemini.
Should Win: Diamonds was fantastic and it’s production values were amazing, so good that even ABC picked it up to playing during this past summer. Though it may suffer from too many good choices to choose from.
Best Dramatic Series
Nominees:
Being Erica
Flashpoint
The Border
The Tudors
ZOS: Zone of Separation
Will Win: Flashpoint or The Tudors. Both of these shows should be rewarded for increasing exposure of great Canadian shows. If I had to bet my life savings….Flashpoint. But it will be close.
Should Win: I know you thought I was going to say Being Erica in the “will win” category, so I’ll say it here. Who knew that a show about time-traveling would be the most accurate portrayal of post Canadian University=life on TV.
Best Ensemble Performance in a Comedy Program or Series
Nominees:
Billable Hours
Da Kink in My Hair
Rent-A-Goalie
This House Has 22 Minutes
Three Chords from the Truth.
Will Win: Tough call on this one this one too. I’m going to go with the hilarious cast from Rent-A-Goalie.
Should Win: I know I don’t seem like it, but I’m a sorta a sympathetic guide. This is Da Kink In My Hair’s only nomination. If they can be optimistic, so I can I.

Geminis Awards Will Win and Should Win #3

>With the Gemini’s only three nights away, it’s time to look at our female nominees and play Who Should/Who Will Win. It’s where dreams are created and crushed all at the same time. It’s a tough game, it’s kinda like RISK, which means it isn’t easy, but someone has to do it.

Click here to see the results for the other categories like Hosting/Anchoring and Male Actors.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role.
Nominees:
Erin Karpluk (Being Erica)
Amy Jo Johnson (Flashpoint)
Andrea Menard (Hit and Run)
Amanda Tapping (Sanctuary)
Natalie Dormer (The Tudors)
Will and Should Win: No Contest. Erin Karpluk. She has made what very easily could have an okay show, a great show. Karpluk appears in every scene of the Being Erica and you never get sick of her. If she doesn’t win, it would be the biggest of shocks.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series
Nominees:
Barbara Hershey (Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning)
Louise Rose (Diamonds)
Tiio Horn (Moccasin Flats: Redemption)
Will Win: If I was voting, it would go to Hershey, just because I still love the movie Beaches so much.
Should Win: Invoking my Canadian only rule, Tiio Horn is the automatic winner.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series
Nominees:
Rachel Marcus (Booky’s Crush)
Christine Ghawi (Celine)
Joanne Kelly (Diamonds)
Judy Davis (Diamonds)
Chandra West (Of Murder and Memory)
This is a tough category because there are lots of great performances to choose from. I think Christine Ghawi will take it for difficult portrayal of the Canadian icon.
Should win: Rachel Marcus is only eleven years old and she has already been nominated for two Geminis! That’s insane. Talent like that has to be rewarded, before another american show swoops in and steals her!

Geminis Awards Will Win and Should Win #2

>

Today we continue our look at the potential winners and losers of the 24th annual Geminis, taking place in Calgary this Saturday.
Yesterday we looked at hosting duties, now we move on to the male acting awards!
Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role.
Nominees:
Enrico Colantoni (Flashpoint)
Hugh Dillon (Flashpoint)
Robin Dunne (Sanctuary)
Daniel Kash (The Line)
Ron White (The Line)
Will Win: After being nominated last year for Durham County, Hugh Dillon is pretty much a lock for this one. Look for the academy to award years of strong performances. (Plus he is going to the awards, which is pretty much a sure sign.)
Should Win: As much as I would love Veronica Mars’ dad (Colantoni), to take home a trophy, I kinda only want Canadians winning our awards. Dillon definitely deserves this one.
SHOCKER: Thanks to an insightful reader, I just learned that Colantoni is CANADIAN. Who the hell knew? This throws everything off. EVERYTHING. Please stand by.
UPDATE: So I watched both episodes these actors submitted for their nominations, and I’ve decided to stick with Dillon. Still super embarrassed that I didn’t know Colantoni was Canadian. My deepest apologies.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series
Nominees:
Dylan Everett (Booky’s Crush)
Stuart Hughes (Booky’s Crush)
Hugh Dillon (Of Murder and Memory)
Reda Guerinik (The Terrorist Next Door)
Will Win: Ummmm….I seriously have never heard of any of these programs, so I’m going to take a mathematical and calculated guess. Booky’s Crush will split the votes, Dillon will win for Best Actor, so he won’t win for this. That leaves Reda Guerinik. Congrats.
Should win: If Dillon doesn’t win for Flashpoint, he should win for this.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading
Role in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series
Nominees:
Burn Up (Bradley Whitford)
David Suchet (Diverted)
Trevor Duplessis (In A World Created By a Drunken God)
Carlo Rota (Othello, The Tragedy of the Moor)
Chenier Hundal (The Terrorists Next Door)
Will: Whitford might win, but I personally dis-qualify him for not being Canadian. So I think, Rota will pick it up.
Should: Trevor Duplessis, based on the “Drunken God” title alone.
Agree or Disagree!?

Geminis Awards Will/Should #1

>

This is going to be a really exciting week. This Saturday, Calgary will be hosting the Gemini awards. Don’t worry if you aren’t familiar with the Geminis awards, that’s what I’m here for!
The Geminis are like the Emmys for the North. They reward the best in Canadian television and for two days, Calgary is going to be filled with the who’s-who of canadian celebrities. Which means I have 48 hours to track them doubt, loyal readers know I will do everything I can!
All this week I will be counting down to the awards by looking at all the nominees and playing my favourite game: Who Will Win/Who Should Win.
We’ll start today with a few different categories:

Best Host or Interviewer in a General/Hu
man Interest or Talk Program or Series.
Nominees:
George Kourounis (Angry Planet)
Austin Stevens (Austin Stevens Adventures)
Les Stroud (Survivorman Third Season)
George Stroumboulopoulos (The Hour with Stroumboulopoulos)
Matt Wells (Where You At Baby?)

Will win: George.
Should Win: George. Easily our countries hottest commodity. He is Canada’s John Stewart, only better.
Best News Anchor
Nominees:
Diana Swain (CBC)
Janet Stewart (CBC)
Heather Hiscox (CBC)
Peter Mansbridge (CBC)
Kevin Newman (Global)
Will win: Kevin Newman. As the sole non-CBC nominee, the others will fall to the split-vote syndrome.
Should win: I’m hoping for Heather Hiscox. She’d be the first woman to win it since Diana Swain in 2000!
Best Performance or Host in a Variety Program or Series
Nominees:
Adam Beach, Tina Keep (2009 National Aboriginal Achievement Awards)
Theo Tams (Canadian Idol)
Leah Miller ( So You Think You Can Dance Canada)
Russell Peters (The 2009 Juno Awards)
Jason Priestley (The 23rd Annual Gemini Awards)
Will Win: Easily the weirdest group of nominees. Jason Priestly could be the surprise winner.
Should Win: Russell Peters, even though he won last year too, I have a soft spot for the two-time Juno Host. Mostly because he made them cool. Miller will get it as soon as she stops reading the cards and learns how to pronounce Canada properly.

Love for the Geminis!

>
I’m getting more and more excited for the Geminis! They are just a couple of weeks away now and looking at the guest list, it’s going to be quite the weekend in Calgary.

They Gemini organizers just added Cory Monteith (Finn on Glee) as a presenter at the awards. I don’t quite know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to track him down and interview the shit out of him. I don’t know anyone at Global to help track down his managment, but if you do email me at: mikesbloggityblog@gmail.com
Also presenting at the awards are Being Erica’s Erin Karpluk, Flashpoints’s Hugh Dillon, Melrose Place’s Jessica Lucas and George Stoumboulopoulos!!

This weekend is going to be epic.
16 sleeps!

Geminis Wrap-Up!

>
Who knew the Geminis would take three nights to give out? This past Monday and Tuesday were the first two nights of the awards in Toronto and the third night, the one that is televised, will take place in Calgary on November 14th.

So far, going into next month’s Gala, CBC’s The Tudors leads with four trophies, while CTV’s Flashpoint has picked up three.
I’m also afraid that many of you don’t know what the Geminis are, so here is a little refresher: The Geminis are the equivalent of the Emmys in the USA. They reward the best in Canadian Television. Make sense?
Some of the winners so far that you actually might know/care about so far include:
Best Talk Series: The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos (CBC-The Hour)

Best Live Sporting Event: 2008 Beijing Olympics (CBC Toronto) Trevor Pilling, Don Peppin
Best News Information Series CBC News: the fifth estate (CBC) David Studer, Sally Reardon
Best Newscast CBC News: The National (CBC) Mark Harrison, Mary Mather, Heather McLennan, Fred Parker, Greg Reaume
Gemini Humanitarian Award: Susan Hay. I’m pretty sure I was robbed.

Best TV Movie Elijah (Anagram Pictures Inc., Eagle Vision (Manitoba))
Best Music, Variety Program or Series: So You Think You Can Dance Canada – Season 1
Unfortunately, one of my favorites, Anna Silk lost her first Gemini nomination. She was up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Guest Role, Dramatic Series, for her turn as Cassidy in Being Erica. The award ended up in the hands of Tatiana Maslany for Flashpoint. Ironically, Maslany also appeared on Being Erica as Dr. Tom’s daughter, Sara. You are a cruel, cruel mistress Geminis.

Gemini Awards are announced!

>

Finally a reason to watch the Geminis!

The nominees for the 24th annual awards that celebrate the best in Canadian Television were just announced and some pretty big shows racked up the nominations!
CTV’s Flashpoint is on top with a record 19 nominations. The Tudors (which isn’t canadian is it?) follows up with second place and 11 nominations. My favorite Being Erica picked up 9 nominations and so did Diamonds (CBC), Less Than Kind (City TV) and The Border (Global). Click here to see all the nominees.
I must give a special shout out to fellow Frederictonian Anna Silk! She is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Guest Role, Dramatic Series for her turn as Erica’s lesbian childhood friend on Being Erica. Like you could forget that episode.
The awards will be handed out right here in Calgary on November 14th! I’m shockingly alarmed by how excited I am for the Geminis this year. It’s like me saying I like CSI; it just seems so foreign to me!
