Review: The Sound of Music

>

This week, one of Canada’s biggest musicals, The Sound of Music, celebrates
it’s one-year anniversary at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre.

Surprisingly, I have yet to see the movie on which the show is based, so
I’m going to be honest when I say that I wasn’t too excited about the idea
of sitting through a musical that, when described to me, sounded an awful
lot like John and Kate Plus Eight, only with Nazis.

Simply put, The Sound of Music just isn’t my spoon full of sugar.

Wait, that’s the wrong musical.

Either way, I happen to like my musicals to be a little more offensive
(see Urinetown), controversial (see Avenue Q) and perhaps a little gory
(see Evil Dead). The idea of a guitar-toting nun singing songs with a
bunch of children wasn’t exactly appealing. But I’m always willing to give
something new a try, so I decided to check the Sound of Music out.

Although I went into the show with enough cynicism to rival that of a Fox
News commentator, the show and it’s star Elecia MacKenzie slowly broke me
down. As I actually enjoyed the show (with the lowest expectations going
in, mind you!), I’ve decided to take it upon myself to try to convince you
that maybe, you just might like it too.

Four Reasons Why You Might Like The Sound Of Music (That You May Think But
Never Admit):

-Cynical heart be dammed, those kids are cute and funny and they know it.
- The impressive and exuberant set changes will perplex even the most
veteran theatre goers. “Uh, where did that giant moving mountain come from?” was
uttered more than once.
- The show is much more fun when you realize that you actually know 75% of
the songs already. It reminded of the last time I watched Wayne’s World, I
was surprised how much that movie has penetrated today’s culture.
- Anwyn Musico (Liesl). Hands down, the best thing to hit the Canadian
musical theatre stage in years. She is ridiculously talented and it becomes
impossible not to watch only her when she is on stage. Hopefully Canada
can hold on to her, before Broadway or the West End come calling.
- The scenes featuring the nuns in show reminded me how much I loved the
hilarious movie Sister Act, and any musical that reminds us of the Whoopi
Goldberg classic is alright in my books. (I’ve heard rumors of a Sister
Act: The Musical, can anyone confirm or deny?)

If you have been holding out on seeing The Sound of Music because you
thought you wouldn’t like it, you might be surprised! I know I was. And
with the show closing on January 3rd, you don’t really have time to wait -
so get on it!

Look out Vancouver!

>

Vancouver is so freaking lucky.

First they have the Olympics and now they have zombies.

I should clarify.
It was announced this morning that one of my favourite musicals, Evil Dead: The musical will be opening up in Vancouver on October 20th! The Canadian production, which has seen runs in Toronto, NYC and Calgary, will have it’s run at the Vogue Theatre on Granville Street.

Also, there are apparently two productions of the show going on at the same time! My recommendation is to see the GZT with H&M and KEYSTONE show , because they are using the same set that was used in the other cities and it’s a spectacle that unfortunately I don’t think community theatre will be able to replicate.
If you are a Vancouverite and you are looking to lose your musical virginity, THIS is the show to see. Especially in the blood splatter zone. Just ask this lady:

Yes, that is her wedding dress.

I’ve already seen the show three times, (twice in Calgary, once in Toronto), and I can’t sell this show enough. You won’t have a more enjoyable time, even if you’ve never seen the Evil Dead movies.

Tickets go on sale this Wednesday!!!!

Now about those Olympics….

More Evil!

Hey Vancouver!

Evil Dead: The Musical is coming your way.  It’s not announced yet.  But trust me, it is.  Consider me jealous.  You. Will. Love. It. It’s going to feature a lot of the cast members from the Calgary show, they are great, so the show is in  good hands.  Again, you didn’t hear it from me!
I’m also currently accepting props for not going with the obvious pun of: “it is to die for!”

And you thought weddings were Evil?

>
So I went Evil Dead: The Musical for the third time on Tuesday night. That’s right THIRD TIME. Suck on that recession. (seriously I’m broke, but hot damn do I love a zombie musical).

Anyway in the splatter zone there was a woman wearing her wedding dress. That too requires repeating, HER WEDDING DRESS.
She figured that she was never going to wear it again after her wedding day anyway, so now she got a halloween costume out of it. However, I think that she may be setting her husband up for the most elaborate frame jobs ever. Just a hunch.
If you are in Calgary and still haven’t seen Evil Dead: The Musical, you are an awful awful person. It closes on July 12th. Do yourself a favour and see it, just maybe not in something so expensive.

More Evil!

If you haven’t seen Evil Dead: The Musical yet, your day just got bloody awesome!

Ground Zero Theatre (GZT) and Hit & Myth Productions (H&M) just announced that the show, which has been running for over a month, has extended their run until July 12th!  Which means after you get thrown up on at Stampede, you can blood and cuts poured on you at Evil Dead: The Musical!
If you are going to be in Calgary this show is a MUST see.  I promise you have never ever seen anything like it…thankfully.

Drag me Up to the movies!

>

This weekend will be a very confusing weekend for me.

I will be heading to the theatre to see Evil Dead: The Musical. Then, at some point, I’m going to be heading to the movie theatre to watch both the family film Pixar’s Up! and Sam Raimi’s horror flick Return to Hell.
Is there something wrong with me that I want to see these two very opposite movies equally as much.
Can you blame me?  Their reviews are amazing. Both got an “A” rating from my bible, Entertainment Weekly.  UP! currently has a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Drag Me To Hell has a very ridiculously amazing (for a horror flick) 94%!
I haven’t decided which order I’m going to see them in. Maybe this weekend will be the one where I finally try to sneak into one movie, after paying and watching another.  I’ve always wanted to do that.
The only thing standing in my way from a movie/theatre filmed weekend is the stupid weather.  Why does it have to be so sunny on weekends I want to be inside?  Stupid summer.

Evil Time!

Calgarians Unite!

Have you gotten your tickets for Evil Dead: The Musical yet?
The show opened yesterday and it’s getting AMAZING reviews!  The show is so popular that they’ve actually extended the run until the end of June 30th.
I’ve been telling you since I saw the show in Toronto, that this show is really great that even Nickelback fans would love it.  They would also love a show, but that’s another argument for another day.
I’ll be there on Saturday night and I can’t freaking wait to see the show again!
But your tickets now!

Getting a little more Evil…

>
Are you sick of me talking about Evil Dead:The Musical yet?

Calgarians are only a couple of weeks away until the show opens up after closing in Toronto last fall!  When I first saw the show in the home town of Shawn Desman, I had never seen any of the Evil Dead movies, so if you are like, this is your weekend.
This Saturday night The Uptown movie theatre will have a screening of Evil Dead 2 at 11pm!  The show is only $10 and if you haven’t seen ED2, that movie makes Vanilla Sky look like a disney movie.  It is messed up!
Unfortunately I won’t be there because I will be Birthday-partying it up!  But if you have the chance, this is probably the scariest/weirdest Saturday night you’ll ever have!

So bloody exciting!

Evil is coming….

>Also available on Calgary Herald’s The Q

This past summer I had the chance to go to Toronto and catch two shows that I keep meaning to write about. The first is the well known and obscenely offensive Avenue Q. The second is the lesser known Evil Dead: The Musical. Dead played in Toronto and NYC for years and has built up quite the loyal, if not cultish, audience.

I freaking loved the show so much that I got a poster (–>) of it wood-laminated and put in my office.
So you can imagine how sad I was when it closed a couple of weeks after seeing it over the summer.
Well as luck would have it, it was just announced today that Calgary’s Ground Zero Theatre (the guys that brought Urinetown to the city) will be producing Evil Dead: The Musical as apart of it’s newest season!
Yes, Evil Dead is a musical and it is freaking AWESOME. And I know that a lot of people hate musicals but this isn’t your typical musical and you’ll probably be able to convince even the manliest man to go see it. How can anyone not love a show with songs like: “Blew that bitch away,” and “All the Men in My Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons“?
Oh and let’s not forget about the “splatter zone” which means the first three rows get covered in “blood” (see picture below). It’s like watching Shamu at Seaworld, but instead of being splashed with water and laughing, you get covered in blood while screaming.
Like I said, awesome.
The show starts previews in May 2009 but I have no doubt tickets for this show are going to go fast, if not for the fact that I’ll hopefully be going every night. Last time I was too chicken to sit in the first three rows, but not this time. I’m going to buy a white t-shirt and white pants-yes, WHITE PANTS and make the most of it!
Well done Ground Zero, well done indeed.

Me with a victim of the Toronto production’s splatter zone!
