Photos: Jian Ghomeshi brings Q to Calgary!

Tonight was a really special night in Calgary. CBC Radio’s most popular program ever, Q with Jian Ghomeshi taped an episode of the program right here in the city.

Now, to you Toronto and Vancouver folk, you might not think this is a big deal. But here in Calgary, we don’t get a lot of shows that involve a live audience. I actually can’t think of one, especially one as big as the cue.

The show will air on Friday, November 18th on CBC Radio, but I was lucky enough to attend the taping on Thursday night.  What I really loved was that Q really highlighted some of my favourite and this city’s most talented people  including Jann Arden, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, actress Rebecca Northan and of course, our mayor Nenshi, who’s own superstar status almost stole the show.

The Calgary edition of Q also introduced me to Samantha Savage Smith, an amazing singer who’s album is currently downloading on to my computer as I type. There was also an interesting media panel discussion about both The Occupy Calgary movement and the Keystone pipeline debate, you’ll have to listen to the show yourself, but let’s just say there were cheers, jeers, boos and thankfully a little laughter.

It was great to see such an important show come to our little city in the west, I’m hoping that Jian will go back to Toronto and spread the word to other shows and that they themselves might think about coming out to visit us too.

Montreal Bound!

>
I haven’t un-packed yet and I’m already off on another adventure.

I’m currently sitting in the airport waiting to get on a plane to MONTREAL! Sweet heaven I love that city. I can’t wait to be there for all the fall colours. Unfortunately, Alberta doesn’t get the fall colours Canada is famous for. We get yellow and/or nothing. It sucks. Plus some quality time with one of the coolest women I know, my granny morrison. She is cool shit. Amazing. I’m also looking forward to catching up with some old friends and hopefully sleeping a little bit.
I’ve also heard a rumor that Stacy Farber, ellie from Degrassi, is filming her new CBC show in Montreal. It’s called 18-To-Life and I’ve made it my weekend goal to find them. I don’t care how old my granny is, we’ll walk until we find Farber. I need to tell her that I think she is great, just in case she didn’t already read about it.
I’m also excited because I’m going to be flying WestJet for the first time in six years. I’m usually loyal to my aeroplan points (for the free flights, not the service), but I decided to spice things up this time around.
As long as I get to Montreal, that’s all I care about!
Happy early Thanksgiving everyone!

The New Adventures of My Old Couch

>
YES! It’s all coming together now! My attempt at Canadian media domination has entered the next phase, all thanks to….my couch.

Dammit, I knew this thing would overshadow me. I feel like Ben Mulroney’s brother. And I don’t even think he has a brother, so that can’t be good.
(UPDATE: Apparently he has two brothers, which I think only furthers my point.)
My couch and I have made the front page of CBC Radio 2′s website!!! It’s all apart of the Great Canadian Song Quest (see the glamourous picture here), and I can’t help but feel that my couch is a true contender.
After admiring my attempt at being a centerfold, listen to the podcast that I also recorded with CBC Radio 2.
Happy Friday!!

Van Speaks!

>
I don’t really like to talk about it too much, but I have a pretty famous relative. Music icon Van Morrison.

Of course, I use the term “related” very loosely. We share a last name, that means we are related, right? I mean…we are probably related. Like a solid 1 to 2 percent chance. Does he buy me Christmas gifts? No. Should he? I wish.
But I don’t like to get too personal on the blog. Anyway, Coulsin/Uncle Van was on CBC Radio One’s Q with Jian Ghomeshi and apparently gave an “eye-opening and candid” interview yesterday and I’ve never been more proud of someone I tell people that I’m related to.
And that’s a lot of people. I don’t know how Ghomeshi got the normally reclusive singer to talk so openly, but the interview was easily one of the longest and most in-depth interviews Morrison has given in decades. I should know, he is such a drag at Christmas dinners.
My great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother would be so pleased. Well done cousin/uncle.
You can listen to the interview completely uncut, bad words and all, on the Q’s website.

My Night In the Den!

>So I just got back from one of the most amazing nights. I was invited to watch the premiere of CBC’s The Dragon’s Den with the entire cast and crew at a premiere party here in Toronto. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect way to celebrate my last night in Toronto. This week has been INSANE and tonight’s party just capped it off perfectly. Let’s just say, they were serving Dragon’s Den Martini’s. Or as my mom would often call them, Mommy’s Night-Night Juice.

I got the chance to talk to a couple of the “dragons” and the host and all were amazingly nice. Seriously, I did everything I could to make them become as mean as they are portrayed on tv, yet nothing. I even asked them all for a couple of hundred dollars. All they did was laugh. I wasn’t joking, cabs are expensive in Toronto.
I also got my very first SWAG BAG! There was a ton of cool stuff in it, mostly it is some of products you’ll be seeing in this season of the show, so I’m going to share with you the contents at a later time. But can I just say, swag bags? Very cool.
Watching the show with the cast was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I had a blast meeting everyone. Check out some of the pictures!
Did you watch Dragon’s Den tonight?

Some of the Dragon’s Den Cast. From left, Arlene Dickinson, Jim Treliving and host Dianne Buckner
Arlene Dickinson and I. She doesn’t know it, but I’m going to interview her in Calgary. Probably in a McDonald’s drive-thru.
Jim Treliving and me! Can you tell who is the gentle giant and who is way too excited?

Special thanks to everyone at Media Profile for a great night. Jennifer, Allison, Jeri and Renee, you guys rock my socks off. And I was wearing two pairs. Wish you were there Rachel, Dane and Charmaine and all my other peeps that are way to nice to Mike’s Bloggity Blog!

Interview: Erin Karpluk

>
You would have to be living under a rock to not have heard of CBC’s Being Erica (Soapnet in the States). Posters are everywhere, commercials are non-stop and the ratings? Well, like all cult-ish shows, the ratings aren’t amazing. But they were good enough for CBC to bring the show back for a second season, of course it helped that the critics and fans of the show would have rioted worse than they did when they got rid of the Hockey Night in Canada song. Plus I’m sure the show’s nine Gemini nominations didn’t hurt. The show’s star, Erin Karpluk and Michael Riley, both picked up nominations for the awards, which are handed out next month.

I had the opportunity to visit the Being Erica set. I also got the chance to chat with Erin and she literally couldn’t be nicer and more gracious. I was interested to see how Erin was dealing with the rocketing popularity of the show, what it was like to be Canadian actress and most importantly what was in store for the one and only, Erica Strange.

Now that you are almost done filming the second season, how is the experience different than filming the first?
It wasn’t so different, I kind of felt like I was coming home. I had no idea what was in store for the second season, but it felt very natural to come back. I was excited to get going, especially once I started reading the scripts. They took it (the show) in such a different direction. I felt like if Erica kept going in the same direction, how many regrets can this girl have? When I read the first script of the second season, they blew open the doors of the show and I was really excited!
Between Erica’s co-workers, friends and family, the show’s cast is quite big; is that something that continues in the second season?
Absolutely. Whenever Erika travels time-travels, the same people need to be there for certain points in her life. Ethan, Judith, Jenny, Katie are there. Plus some of the guest stars like Alex Berlin and Zack from Erica’s High School are back too.
I have regrets all over Canada, but Erica’s seem to be mostly in Toronto. Will Erica be doing some traveling?
A lot of them are at University, Camp, she goes to Taipei as an ESL teacher.
One of the show’s most popular episodes was Everything She Wants, where Cassidy, a girl from Erica’s past, tries to seduce her. Anna Silk is now nominated for a Gemini for her portrayal of Cassidy. Will there be more to that story?
Well actually, there is a post-card from Cassidy that is on Erica’s Desk. She gave it to her at the end of that episode. It’s there if you are really looking for it. So Cassidy is never far from Erica’s thoughts. That is by far my favourite episode of the season. I wasn’t sure about it at first but, the message that you can give your body but not your mind, you can give your mind to somebody but not your body. But who do you give both to? If you are going to watch one episode of the first season, I always tell people to watch that one.
This year’s Geminis are going to be in Calgary. Since you were born in Jasper, what does it mean for you to have the awards in Alberta?
So Amazing! It’s my home province. I’m just so happy that the show is nominated. My family is my date, so it’s good for them too. I have lots of friends there, so I can get some visits in at the same time.
Being Erica has a huge online following. What is Erin Karpluk’s life like online? Do you google yourself?
When the show first came out, I read a couple of reviews of the show. And then I got away from it. It’s better for me to stick to my job and do my best. We’re so lucky because for the most part, it’s all positive online. There is a facebook site that is dedicated to Erica Strange, but I don’t run it. Although, there is an Erin Karpluk fan page that I have someone help me with.
What do you think of the recent resurgence of Canadian shows, especially south of the border?
It’s always a hard question for me, because I’ve made my living doing Canadian television. And I’ve been apart of wonderful Canadian shows like Godiva’s. The cast and crew was awesome on that, and I thought the production values were great. I get the compliment that Being Erica doesn’t look “Canadian”, but it’s double-sided for me. Because I’m so proud of the work that the cast and crews have done in the past. But yeah, we definitely can compete with American shows. Everything about the show is Canadian, the actors, the crew, quite a lot of the music. It can definitely stand on outside of Canada. And I like that they use Toronto for itself, so that’s exciting.
As a Canadian actress, do you have a preference to work on Canadian or American projects?
Unfortunately, you go where the work is. There are projects that I’d want to be of more than others, but I think that is sort of standard. And that’s the thing, I don’t really get the East cost, West Coast rift. And I certainly don’t have any quams with the States and Canada. If you are an actor, you go where the work is. I love that I get to travel for my job. You’ve had so many great things come out of Being Erica.
What was your first “pinch me” moment with the show?
There are so many. When we wrapped last year, we were shooting all day and then the producers came down with champagne for everyone. The whole crew was in the studio and I was shooting up until the last second. I love our cast and crew and they gave me a little gift, and I just felt overwhelmed by how much we had accomplished in five months and by how much I was supported by these talented people and being so grateful for their professionalism, I was going to say something, but then I got a little teary eyed, so I just said “Let’s Party!”
Being Erica airs Tuesday night’s on CBC. You can watch full episodes for free on their website.

side note: It should be pointed out that I have Erin Karpluk on audio saying that she reads and loves Mike’s Bloggity Blog. I can die a happy bald man.

Time to Enter the Den!

>
I said to a friend yesterday, that I think this is the first time in forever, that I could actually/probably tell you a show that is on CBC every night.

Seriously when in the last time you could do that? CBC seems to be getting their act together. Now bring back Jon-O-Vision and you shall be forgiven for Sophie.

But that’s not my point. My point is that Dragon’s Den finally comes back tonight.
Can I just tell you how intense this show is? Honestly, the judges terrify me. But in that good way…if that makes any sense. It’s kinda like when you call home. You know your parents are going to be pissed about something that you’ve done, but hearing them get so angry, is completely worth it. But maybe that’s just me. I’ve watched the premiere episode and there are certainly are some interesting ideas. But like American Idol, are you really watching for the contestants, or are you waiting and watching for the judges to LOSE IT, they are all kinds of bat-shit crazy and I LOVE IT. Arelene Dickinson is so crazy, that only part of her hair is changes colour! Seriously, who can do that with their hair? Arlene Dickinson can.
I wonder what she could do to my hair.

On set with Being Erica

>I just got back from my set visit of Being Erica! I got the chance to talk to Michael Riley (Dr. Tom) and Erin Karpluk (Erica Strange). I’ll have the interview with Karpluk soon, but until then, here are some of my favorite pictures.

I learned some SHOCKING secrets about the show. I’m in discussions right now, to find out what I can share and what I can’t. But trust me, things on the CBC show are about to get all sorts of crazy.

Thanks to Katherine from Holmes for taking me around. Also thanks to Olympus for letting me try out their new E-P1 camera!

Bloggity Podcast!

>
Last week I hinted at doing something secret with CBC and I didn’t really want to talk about it, at least until I knew if it was actually going to happen.

Well it did happen and now I can finally tell you what’s going on.
Last week I taped my very first Podcast with CBC Radio 2! I did it to help with the launch of The Great Canadian Song Quest!
Very very cool.
You can hear it by clicking here. You can listen to the whole thing, or you can just skip to three-quarter mark when I take to the air-waves. It was a ton a fun and I hope I get asked back as the competition gets more intense and I continue to defend my choice of my couch, as the coolest place in Canada. Remember (showered) visitors are always welcome.
Make sure you check out the Great Canadian Song Quest site and nominate your favorite spots in Canada!

Nominations Open!

>
The nominating portion of CBC Radio 2′s Great Canadian Song Quest has finally opened. Check out their website and nominate you favorite spot in Canada and it might be immortalized in a song!

On second thought, I guess you could do that, but what’s the point? You already know where…rather, what is going to win.
