Comic scores big!

Well we knew something positive, besides Carly Rae Jepsen, had to come out of Canadian Idol, right?

Jon Dore, who frequently played second co-host on the long-gone talent competition, has just scored the lead on a new NBC pilot!  Even cooler is that the show actually sounds good.  Please note, I’m taking into account NBC’s weak recent history of making good television when I make that declaration.

The comedy is called My Life as an Experiment and will also star Paget Brewster, who could use a laugh after years of dealing with Criminal Minds. According to deadline.com, Dore stars as “a magazine immersion journalist who explores all sorts of unique experiences” and Paget will play his wife.

But don’t get too excited Jon Dore fan(s).  “A pilot order does not a regular series make“.  It really is just the first step to hopefully, someday becoming a pilot.  We’ll probably know around May if the show stands a chance. But the producers of Canadian Idol probably have their fingers crossed.  If the show becomes a hit, they can be proud that at least one thing they did went on to become succesful.

Your move Ryan Malcolm

Can Canadian Idol come back now please?

I miss Canadian Idol. Yes, that Canadian Idol.  You’ve already forgotten about it haven’t you?  Well you should consider yourself lucky. For years now I’ve been tossing and turning at night struggling to forget about the glory days of Rex Goudy, Jaydee Bigsby, Ryan Malcom and Melissa O’Neil.   How have you been able to turn your back on these semi-celebs so quickly? Did you not vote for them thousands of times? Did you not buy all their CDs?  Did you not see Kalen Porter in concert three nights in a row?  What’s that?  No?  You didn’t? Shit.

Surely I’m not the only one that misses Ben, Sass and all the other barely qualified judges, right?

So this is my plea to any Canadian network. American Idol is evolving this season, so why can’t our Canadian edition do the same?  Hasn’t this “hiatus” gone on long enough?  If by simply reminding you that this show even existed isn’t enough to bring Canadian Idol back, I’ve prepared a list that can be brought up at any of the next month’s board meetings.

Three Reasons Why Canadian Idol Needs to Come Back:

1. I’m personally worried about Ben Mulroney.  There, I said it.  That took me a lot of therapy sessions to admit that I’m genuinely concerned about the guy whose dad paid CTV a lot of money to fast track his son’s fame and legitimacy…with little success.  But did you see Ben during TIFF? There’s a sadness in his eyes.  I don’t know if he just misses trying and failing at reading a teleprompter or what, but it’s like watching a puppy trying to not pee on himself. Sure he has a kid now, but does that fill the void of struggling to pretend you care about contestants?  No, no it doesn’t.  Most importantly, Etalk doesn’t give Ben the chance to remind us that he is fluent in French. You haven’t forgotten that he’s bilingual have you?  What have you done CTV, what have you done indeed.

2. Almost on a daily basis I get about a dozen or so Facebook event invites for someone who is singing at an Open Mic night or needs one more vote to win a song contest for a radio station.  Not that I don’t appreciate their efforts, but sometimes I’d like to know if I’m wasting my time or. Wouldn’t it just be easier if they could audition for Idol and find out for themselves if they are good or not?  While I know the judges for Canadian Idol were very cookie-cutter and rarely contributed anything that could even be considered close to helpful advise, I like to believe what they were doing was a way of culling my talentless friends.  It was a system that worked and quite frankly, I miss it.

3. Theo Tams would get work.  Think about it, they always bring back last season’s winner to mentor or at least perform.  That could result in a solid one or two days of employment for the fallen Idol, (three if they let him practice.)  And with winter coming, he’ll need the money to buy scarves.  Plus, I’m pretty sure the Canadian government would let CTV claim it as charity work.

Canadian Idol Terrorist Shocker!

It turns out that Theo Tames wasn’t the worst thing ever to come out of Canadian Idol!

Just two days ago, RCMP raided two houses in the nations capital and ended up arresting three men on the very scary charges of terrorist offenses.  Sadly one of these people wasn’t Ben Mulroney.  Instead it was a former contestant by the name of Khurram Syed Shur.  Don’t worry if you don’t remember him, it was four years ago, it was on Canadian Idol and he didn’t even make it past the judges.

But thanks to the power of Youtube, you can re-watch his audition.  Personally, based on this audition, he should have been arrested four years ago!

I think I’m just suprised that it took this long for someone on Canadian Idol to be arrested. It happens yearly on the American version.

So now that we are talking Canadian Idol. Anyone got any updates for me?  I know Melissa O’Neil is singing with God Made Me Funky. But what about the rest of them?  Kalan Porter? Eva Avila? Theo Tame?  Ryan Malcom?  Anyone?  Hello….is this thing on?

Found: Canadian Idol's Melissa O'Neil

>
Canadian Idol winners have never really found a huge amount of success. Either they disappear off the face of the earth, or they bury themselves under a pile of lame-ass scarves.

But one Idol winner seems to be bucking the trend.
When you first think of Calgary’s Melissa O’Neil, you might be inclined to think of her as a one-hit wonder from the third season of Canadian Idol. Some wouldn’t even consider that. She was also known for dating Idol runner-up Rex Goudie. Neither her relationship nor her Idol fame lasted very long.
But if you’ve been to Toronto in the past couple of years, you might know that O’Neil has slowly been building herself some music cred, which isn’t easy to do after Canadian Idol. Is it Ryan Malcom?
Many theatre fans were delighted by her performance in Mirvish’s Dirty Dancing and she recently did a show with Stage West Calgary.
But on to the really cool news: I’ve come to find out that O’Neil is now the lead female vocalist for the funkiest band in Canada, God Made Me Funky! What a freaking solid career move on Melissa’s part!

So You Think You Can Date!

Maybe CTV should get into the match-making business.
After years of Canadian Idol contestants hooking up, it seems the same is now happening on So You Think You Can Dance Canada.
In an interview with Etalk on Friday, this past season’s winner Tara-Jean confirmed that her and second place finisher Vincent Desjardins are doing the horizontal tango. Okay, technically she said: “We are together…it’s pretty official now,”
After months of being sequestered for dance – spending time together while practicing, being teamed-up as dance partners for two weeks in a row, and making the Top 2 – it soon became evident that the dancing duo shared a lot more than Salsa, Rumba, and Mambo moves!
If the two last as an item, I wonder if they’ll ask Mary Murphy to be the MC of their wedding! Hot tamale train indeed!

Did you catch it?

>

So did you catch Sebastian Pigott on Being Erica on Tuesday night?
He played the mysterious new bartender, that seems to have a lot in common with Erica. If you are like me, he looked familiar but you just couldn’t place the actor.
Well, Pigott is probably best known as the Canadian Idol finalist with his brother Oliver in 2007. And now he seems to have gotten himself a regular job. Thus making him the second most successful Idol ever, we all know who the most successful is, don’t we?
This got me thinking about Canadian Idol. Did anyone miss it this summer? No seriously, stop laughing. Do you miss seeing Ben Mulroney on your screens? STOP LAUGHING!
I wonder if CTV is ever going to bring it back?

OMFG it's Theo Whatshisname!

I remember when the Twilight movie finally came out, I thought that there would never be anything so highly anticipated for the rest of my life.

Well I was wrong.
Canadian Idol winner Theo Tams finally releases his first CD today and I know of at least four people who are really to moderately excited. I called around to a couple of HMVs to see if any of them were staying open late Monday night in anticipation, oddly they didn’t know who I was talking about.
Unfortunately, despite the massive hype around the album, things aren’t looking for Tams. Amazon.ca doesn’t even have his cover art up for the album (it has since been posted), which is unfortunately called “Give It All Away”, which I anticipate will be happening in about two to four weeks, even though the disc currently sits at #167 (it was in the 4000s earlier today) on the Amazon sales chart. Also working against Theo is that there is no Canadian Idol this year to help promote his monster debut. He’ll have to do it on his own at mall signings and bus stops around the country…or lethbridge.

Canadian Idol canceled?

>It’s a Christmas Miracle!

Finally something good is coming out of the recession.

Ben Mulroney is sorta out of a job.

That’s right, Canadian Idol was sorta-kinda- canceled this morning when it was announced that they would not be producing the expensive reality show for the 2009 summer season.

The official reason is being blamed on expected lower than normal ad revenue.

But I happen to think it’s because I dealt Canadian Idol a crushing blow just a couple of days ago. Yeah, that’s probably the reason….

They got married!!

>
First off, I’m sorry if you thought the title of this blog post implied that the Two Strangers and A Wedding actually did happen….cause it didn’t. I already covered that. Jeez.

The wedding I’m talking about is Canadian Idol Host and general pain in my side* Ben Mulroney. Yup, he too decided to get married on Thursday to fashion designer Jessica Brownstein in Montreal.

While the wedding went off without a hitch, there is no word if Ben Mulroney gave an awkward sounding speech and make confusing jokes, after all it’s what he does best.

Congrats Ben!

*In this case, “pain in my side” refers to my often debilitating jealously towards Ben’s jobs and hair.

The New Idol

>Although I gave up on Canadian Idol last season for a lot of different reasons a couple of weeks ago, I couldn’t help but being sucked into watching Wednesday night’s finale and cheer for fellow Maritimer and mutual initial sharer Mitch MacDonald.
Sadly, Mitch lost the competition to pianist Theo Tams. Theo now joins other Albertans who also have the won the singing competition including manorexic Kalen Porter and Melissa O’Neil.

As for Mitch, he joins the growing list of runner-up maritimers Craig Sharpe, Rex Goudie and Gary Beales.

I smell a Canadian conspiracy and blame Harmonized Sales Tax and Roch Voisine.

Quick question: How many more seasons do you think CTV is going to rely on Jacob Hoggard to prove that Canadian Idol is actually relevant to the canadian music industry? The most successful Idol who never actually won ever!!!!
