Calgary’s Funniest Parody Accounts!
Oct 03, 2013
One of the best things about Twitter is that it often gives you and up close personal look at how people live their lives. Whether they are celebrities, politicians or the bakery around the corner, Twitter puts you inside the streaming consciousness of the people you follow.
Then there are the parody accounts. Accounts that are created by people not satisfied with just one account, they make fake accounts, often satirizing someone notable. Some of the world’s most popular accounts are The Dark Lord (@Lord_Voldemort7), Bad Luck Brian (@_badluckbrian_) and, of course, God (@TheTweetOfGod). I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of my favourite parody accounts from right here in Calgary.
Is the first anniversary of being abandoned on Mars the paper anniversary or the hopeless despair anniversary?

While not necessarily an account about Calgary, the @SarcasticRover is indeed an account written by a Calgarian and it’s been named one of the best parody accounts in the world, amassing more than 111,000 followers. As the title may suggest, the account is a lighter side of the Mars Rover and accounts what machines planets away are really thinking…sarcastically.
You’ve seen the full page ad from the Coalition for Concerned Calgarians & I know what you’re thinking: Our ad space IS THAT CHEAP! #yycvote

While at times it may seem like the Calgary Sun is itself a parody account, it’s actually (and comically) real. But that doesn’t mean people can’t be inspired by their “interpreted” news stlyings and take to twitter ready to lampoon. That’s where @Sun4Mayor comes in. While they haven’t developed a huge following…yet, the account is often biting and always hilarious. With a few weeks until the big municipal election, this account is definitely one to watch.
But that’s not the only account taking aim at the Calgary Sun.
— Dicks in the Sun (@DicksintheSUN) October 1, 2013
There’s not much to say about @DicksintheSun, it’s an account that tweets photos of someone drawing photos of dicks in the Calgary Sun. And it’s pretty freakin’ hilarious.
just saw a woman having a very heated conversation into one of our pay phones. that’s right. we have pay phones. — market mall (@market_mall) February 27, 2013
I’m embarrassed to admit that I was following this account for a while, thinking it was the real Market Mall, but then when I looked closer…it clearly wasn’t. For the record, this is the twitter account for the real Market Mall. The parody account is the thought stream of someone who, up until recently worked at the mall. It’s slowed down since they left, but it’s still fun to go back and re-read some of the older tweets.
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, which is likely why our mayor has so many Twitter parody accounts. Here are some of my favourites:
I can’t believe I have to say this, but your $1250 displaced persons debit card is not redeemable at Nashville North. — ShitNenshiHastoSay (@ShitNenshiHasto) June 25, 2013
@ShitNenshiHasTo gained almost instant popularity when the account surfaced during the June flood, when the mayor repeatedly had to remind people of the simplest things, saying things like “I can’t believe I actually have to say this, but I’m going to say it. The river is closed.” The account was active up until the State of Emergency was lifted, but recently returned just in time for the municipal election.

@Nenshibobble isn’t as funny as it is cute. I mean, the idea of a bobble head tweeting? Hilarious. No seriously, think about it. Do you know how hard it would be to type if you couldn’t keep your neck up straight? Ahhh the little things.
Those are some of my favourites, but what about you? Did I miss any?
