How I spent 48 hours in Madrid with Coldplay!

All photos were taken by Mike’s Bloggity Blog.
When I sat down to write this blog post about my recent trip to see Coldplay in Madrid with the American Express Unstaged music series, I thought about all the things that happened, looked through all the photos, read all the tweets … and I was left with one single question: “Did that really just happen?”

Luckily, because of those memories, photos and tweets, I know that it did.

Our assignment from American Express Canada was simple: four Canadian blogs were asked to fly across the world to Madrid for only 48 hours to experience la vida loca that is the Spanish capital and, most importantly, be one of the 25,000 people that got to see a one-time-only Coldplay concert in the middle of the country’s most famous arenas, La Plaza de Toros de las Ventas.

Armed with my six-year-old Spanish degree, myself – along with 1loveTO, She Does The City and Hip Urban Girl – got picked up at home, met in Newark, then flown to Madrid and took to the amazingly historic streets of Madrid. Armed with two cameras, a vague recollection of how to order coffee (Café con leche) and a fairly casual itinerary, I tried to make the most of my time in Madrid. At times exploring the city felt like we were on The Amazing Race, something that I will NEVER complain about.

The food, the food, the food.  On my way over to Spain, I had a couple of guide books with me and every single one of them talked about the food, and I’m so happy to report that the food is as good as the rumours say.  Both nights, we were hooked up by the American Express Concierge service (complimentary for Platinum Cardmembers), who made reservations at some fantastic restaurants, packed with authentic food, terrific drinks and wonderful service.  I was so happy to have the concierge book these places for us, because with so many choices, we could have easily ended up in a tourist trap.  Of course, you can’t talk about food in Madrid without talking about the drinks. Accompanied with our food was, of course, authentic sangria, Cava and Spanish red wine. With so much great food and drinks, I understand why the Spanish still enjoy their siestas.

The amazingness of the trip was only emphasized by the fact that we stayed in the incredible Hotel De Las Letras, which was centrally located so that we could feel the excitement of Madrid from our balconies.  When you only have 48 hours, a centrally located place to have a siesta is not only awesome, it’s practically a necessity, so kudos to the Amex Personalized Travel Services team for picking such a great spot for us.

As for the concert, there aren’t really any words.  I mean, sure, inspiring, moving, powerful, fantastic, stirring and amazing all come to mind. But hearing Chris Martin sing Fix You while I was standing in the actual dirt of the bullring, with the rain lightly falling and fireworks and butterfly shaped confetti filling the Madrid night sky, I simply don’t know how to describe it.  Before the concert, I told the other bloggers that I already knew that I would be easily overcome with emotion and would likely cry before the first song ended, which is exactly happened, three separate times.

It was also a lot of fun to know that, at the same time I was viewing the concert live, it was being viewed by thousands of people all around the world via YouTube and Vevo. In case you missed the live-stream on Oct. 26th, you can catch clips of the concert at www.youtube.com/Coldplayvevo!

The American Express Unstaged experience brought both in-concert and at-home viewing to entirely new heights by marrying world-class film directors and top musical acts to bring live-stream, HD performances to music enthusiasts worldwide. (For this show – Amex’s sixth in the series – the director was Anton Corbijn.) And me, a Canadian blogger, got to be a part of it all.

On the way home, I knew people would ask, “Did I have the best time?”  A question that I wanted to give a meaningful answer to.

If I think about the excitement of the trip, the dancing, the food, the concert, the hotel, the sights and most importantly the people, my answer is yes, I did have the best time. Probably of my life.

Bloggity bonus:  And if nothing else, I’m so happy that I got to reenact this photo:

Jian Ghomeshi: Canada’s next great author?

First it was Moxy Fruvous, then it was The Q and now Jian Ghomeshi is continueing to grow his Canadian media empire with the announcement of his first book!

The book is a literary memoir based on a 14-year-old’s desire to be David Bowie. Set in one year of his life, and to the confusion and alarm of his Iranian parents, Ghomeshi tries to transform himself into a New Waver, determined to be the perfect guy to win the heart of an older woman — 16-year-old Wendy, the girl he considers to be the female Bowie of Thornhill, Ontario.

At this point in time, it doesn’t look like he mentions the one time we quickly met at the Junos, but I’m sure it’s just a first draft. I mean, he wouldn’t name a book after the year I was born, if he wasn’t going to mention it, right?

The book will take an interesting method in unraveling, 1982 will have loose chronological narrative structured around twelve songs and symbolic moments from the fall of 1981 to the summer of 1983, including The Clash and Michael Jackson

“1982 was a pivotal period in my life,” says the author. “I acquired the black clothing and the hair gel to be New Wave. To be Bowie. By which I mean, almost Bowie. I was probably the first Persian-Canadian New Waver. Well, I was probably the only Persian-Canadian New Waver.”

Sounds like a great read. 1982 will be released in 2012.

Why I know who’ll win the enRoute Film festival!

Who knew being the most famous person in my family would be so hard?

First it was my grandmother, who now has her own viral video, and now my cousin Ashley McKenzie and her partner Nelson MacDonald have been named finalists of the fifth annual Air Canada enRoute Film Festival. Their film’s called Rhonda’s Party and it’s already won a handful of awards and I have a feeling it will pick up the top prize here too…

The winner of the Best Short Film Award will receive a cash prize of $5,000 courtesy of Cineplex Entertainment, plus an all-inclusive Air Canada trip for two to the Clermont Ferrand International Short Film Festival in France. Achievement Award winners will also be going to the festival in France courtesy of Air Canada.

The other Air Canada enRoute Film Festival finalists are Miles Jay and Orlee-Rose Strauss for Blink, Timothy Chan for A Starry Night.

If you’re lucky enough to be in the Toronto-area, there will be a free public screening of the nominated short films next Thursday, November 10 in Cinema 7 at Scotiabank Theatre from 7 to 8 p.m.

If that wasn’t cool enough, my cousin’s film will be viewed by millions of Air Canada passengers who will be able to view the selected short films on in-seat monitors on any Air Canada plane.

Congrats Ashley and Nelson!

Introducing FX Canada!

Well, the day is finally here, on this very spooky Halloween, Rogers TV has just launched Canada’s newest network FX Canada!

The station will feature a ton of shows that FX is known for including It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Sons of Anarchy, Wilfred, Louie, Justified, The League and most importantly American Horror Story.

The mysterious show has been all the buzz in the States and has already been airing for a few weeks down there, and after a waiting patiently, like good Canadians, we’ll finally get our hands on the show created by Ryan Murphy and that stars Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott.  It will hard to top Revenge, but this may very well be my favourite new show of the season.

Ironically, FX Canada’s Canadian content is still a little lacking and for now, will feature the regular Rogers fare including Reviews on The Run, Murdoch Mysteries, Departures and The Electric Playground.  I’m sure there will be more shows once the network is up and running.

But then again, who cares, it’s all about American Horror Story!

Welcome to Canada FX, I think you’ll like it here.

For more information about FX Canada, just visit their site.

Vote for my granny!

It’s not every day that you ask your blog readers to vote for your 89-year-old grandmother in a comedian competition, but today is that day.  Actually, today is the second day that I told you about it, but I figured we could all do with a reminder, right?

The Winnipeg Gone Wacky competition closes on November 6th, which means you only have a few more days to vote for my granny, who is trying to make her dream of being a stand up comedian come true. Seriously, I couldn’t make this stuff up. Her name is Jean Morrison, and I happen to think she’s hilarious, I’ll let you watch the video, but I think you’ll agree.

Admittedly, it’s sorta annoying that you have to register to vote, but come on, it’s my granny! How can you not want to take a few minutes to vote for her!

Good lucky Granny! You’re the best!

Three scary movies to see this weekend!

No matter what you’re doing this weekend, you’ll probably find yourself wanting to watch at least one scary movie.  Since it’s such a spooky weekend, I thought I’d take a moment to share with you my three favourite scary movies. Chances are you haven’t seen them, so you’ll have to just trust me, these are the three movies you’re looking for!

Dawn of The Dead (remake).  I don’t know how many times I’ve seen this movie, which stars Sarah Polley.  It is one of those movies that the second that I see it’s on, I stop whatever I’m doing and watch it, even though I already own it.  I love it.  Scary, smart and lots and lots of gore. Definitely a must for fans of The Walking Dead.

The Mist. Not very many people know about this movie, but the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s book is terrifying, sad and seems like it could be all too real, I mean besides the monsters living in the Mist, the really scary things that happen are all cause by the humans trapped by the mysterious fog, yeah I’m looking at you Marcia Gay Harden. Oh and the last five minutes?  Unforgettable.

Drag Me To Hell. Sure people love Sam Raimi for his Spiderman movies or Evil Dead.  But me, well I love the director for his little seen Drag Me to Hell.  And while it wasn’t a box office hit, the 92% it has on Rotten Tomatoes cannot lie, this is a fantastically scary movie.  It really is a roller coaster and it’s one of those movies that I would base friendships on.  If you don’t like its humour, its scares and the twists and turns, then I don’t know if we could be friends!

Honourable mention goes to Scream 1, 2 and 4, Halloween, The Ring and The Others.

What are you favourite scary movies?

Metro: Who needs Halloween, Calgary is always scary!

Like a good episode of Roseanne, this week’s Metro column is all about Halloween!

Okay, it’s not as good as Roseanne’s Halloween classic episodes, but you get what I’m trying to say, right?

This weekend Calgary will come alive with ghosts and goblins of all ages.  There will also be slutty pirates, slutty nurses, slutty smurfs and anything else that girls will try to make slutty.   Well that won’t be the only thing scary happening this weekend in Calgary, nope, this city has plenty of things to scare us…but for many Calgarians, they happen year round.

This week’s Metro column look at the scariest things about living in Calgary, whether they are in a costume or not!

The Rankins are coming!

I get a lot of press releases in my inbox everyday, but it’s been a long time since I got one that got me this excited:

RANKIN FAMILY ACOUSTIC TOUR – UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

If you saw my reaction when I saw that The Rankin Family were going on tour, you would have been either a) embarrassed or b) frightened. I freaking love The Rankin Family. I’m obviously going to see them, making it the fifth or six time. And it’s not just The Rankin Family. There’s also all their side projects, The Rankin Sisters (love). Jimmy Rankin (love). Molly Rankin (love.) It’s all love, all the time for The Rankin Family.

If watching The Rankin Family isn’t exciting enough, you know who is opening for them? Jimmy Rankin! Yes, Jimmy is opening for himself. I would hate it if any other band did this, but for The Rankins, anything goes.

Also, if you wanted to make this blog post a drinking game, just take a shot every time you read the word “Rankin”. That’s what I did and I’m feeling the fine, I’m good, man, I love you guys, no seriously, loooooveee yuoi.
