Will a Canadian be the Paradise Hunter?

Remember a couple of weeks ago when I was talking about the Paradise Hunter contest? You know the one, some lucky bugger gets to travel the world for an entire year and get paid for it!? I don’t know why I never submitted a video because the job sounds absolutely awesome. Well producers have narrowed down the contestants to the finals and some Canadians are making a really strong showing.

Check out their videos below. If you feel compelled, you should definitely submit a vote or twelve! Go Canada!

Review: ‘Weird and Wonderful: Rufus Wainwright at the Jubilee’

Special Review by Dan Meades

We were well warned not to applaud when Rufus Wainwright came on stage tonight at the Jubilee, and not to applaud between songs either, we were in fact told to hold out applause until Rufus had left the stage as his “exit was a part of the performance”. Wainwright took the stage in a dramatically slow walk, emerging from stage right dressed in a long black evening gown, complete with a feather and sequin neckline and a 25 foot long train.

As he started his first song an image of an eye appeared on the giant screen behind him. The eyed was closed and colored black with heavy makeup. The giant eye blinked in ultra slow motion as Wainwright finished one song and, after a dramatic pause, went right into another. This went on for about an hour, images of one eye, blinking or opening and closing slowly for the first hour of the show, after which Wainwright stood up and with equally deliberate and slow steps exited the stage. I believe every song in this portion of the show was in a minor key leaving the crowd somber and a little stunned at what we had all seen and heard, this was far more performance art than it was a concert.

After another brief intermission he returned dressed in a more traditionally Rufus ensemble and then went on to play for another hour while interacting with the audience in a way you would expect from a performer of Wainwright’s renown. This is when he really shined for me, playing very active piano and letting his voice do the heavy lifting to the point that he, at moments, was drowning the beautiful tone of the grand piano he was playing. There is something about the tone of his voice that is just magical, he is able to hit deeply moving low notes and equally startling high notes while all the while keeping a depth and thickness of tone that is very rare indeed. He never missed a note tonight on either piano or vocally and there is no doubt that he is one performer that needs to be heard live to be truly appreciated.

Interestingly Teddy Thompson, son of English folk-rock legend Richard Thompson, opened the show tonight, he was charming and witty and has an outstanding voice, melodically he was very traditional but lyrically he had some surprises to share. For me the high point of the night was when both Wainwright and Thompson took the stage together to sing Leonard Cohen’s near-perfect opus “Hallelujah”. While I cannot pretend to have “gotten” the first half of Rufus’ show, nor am I even willing to admit that there was something to get, it was certainly a show I will not soon forget.

Dan Meades always gets pop culture trivia questions wrong; he finds himself politely laughing along when others make jokes about TV Celebs and it took him months to realize that Brangelina is actually two separate people. In fact he had to lie through his teeth just to get Bloggity to let him write music reviews. Some of the lies he told were that he was born and raised in St. John’s Newfoundland and made a living as a George St. Musician through University. In fact Dan is almost completely tone deaf which makes it all the more remarkable that he can review concerts at all.

Let’s Take Some E!

After years of begging to the TV Gods, the E! network finally makes it’s return to the Canadian airwaves today!  While CTV has been touting Keeping Up With The Kardashians as if they were the second coming, there are two very other important reasons of why I want to make sure we keep E! around for a long time: The Soup and Chelsea Lately!

To give you an idea of how much I LOVE these two shows, I’m willing to admit that if I could only watch two shows for the rest of my life, they would The Soup and Chelsea Lately. Yes, they’re that good.

I’m probably going to ignore pretty much anything else on the E! network but the fact that we are now able to enjoy these two shows is totally worth having to hear about The Kardashians in every single CTV press release.

Mike’s Holiday Gift Suggestions!

I’ve always heard that I am impossible to buy Christmas gifts for. I don’t really know how that is possible because sometimes I think this blog is really just an extended Christmas Wish List that is updated daily.

But ’tis the season, so I thought to make it easier, for the next little bit I would let you know some of the gifts that I hope to find under my tree this year!  I guess it is kinda like Oprah’s favourite things but you don’t get anything.  That’s fun, right?

Here are my first two strongly recommended gift suggestions.

1. $10 DJ
How much do you spend on a gift?  Normally I would expect you to spend more than $10 but if it gets me 25 songs, I would find that completely reasonable.  Starting on Tuesday, Itunes Canada will feature the $10 DJ. It’s being billed “the ultimate music curator and perfect digital music companion to any event.” Ten Dollar DJ provides you with 25 classic tracks by some of the world’s top artists bringing musical life to your event, for only $10. Some of the themes for the playlists include: The Wedding Ceremony,  Christmas Cocktails, R&B Cocktail Party,The Wedding Dinner, Smooth Christmas, Cottage-Weekend, 90s Dance Party, Canada Day, Fitness Disco Funk, Dinner For Two.  This might be the easiest gift ever.

Kitchen Scraps
This gift will surely be a huge surprise to everyone that knows me.  Mike, cooking? Yeah, I’m surprised too!  Kitchen Scraps is a cook book by Pierre Lamille, a Calgary illustrator & food writer.  If I’m being honest, I probably won’t use the book for the recipes but just to browse at Lamielle’s cool drawings.  The book seems to be somewhere between Martha Stewart and Stan Lee.  A cool cook book?  Hey, it’s worth a try! You can pick it up for me on Amazon.

Leslie Nielsen passes away

Wow.  This one kinda hurts.

Leslie Nielsen of Naked Gun and Airplane fame has passed away. His family has confirmed this with several major Canadian news sources.

The Regina-born actor was 84 years old when he died of pneumonia. According to Wikipedia, “Nielsen appeared in over 100 films and 1,500 television programs over the span of his career, portraying over 220 characters.”

What can you say about the comedic-genius that hasn’t already been said?  He always seemed so nice and genuine. He was the kinda guy that you secretly wished your were related to because you know that he would make Christmas dinners so funny.   In the past few years, he’s made some really crappy movies like Stan Helsing, Scary Movie 4 and Superhero Movie but let’s be honest, he pretty much perfected the spoof genre. In my eyes, his comedy is untouchable.

Thanks for the laughs Leslie!

The Friday Round-Up!

Happy Friday!

Hope it is a good one for you!  I don’t know what’s it’s been like where you are living but Calgary has been FREEZING!  We are finally thawing out and I couldn’t be more excited.

As always, I thought I would do a list of up for you of some of my favourite blog posts from other blogs from this week! Take a look, you’ll never know what you’ll find interesting!

Have a great weekend!

MuchMore music…literally

GOOD NEWS: The CRTC has OFFICIALLY rejected MuchMusic’s request to air fewer music videos in favour of more “lifestyle” programming.

BAD NEWS: The station is not giving up the fight and will keep pushing for changes it says it needs to make to stay relevant.

I’m not really sure what MuchMusic’s problem is, I mean besides having a now ironic name. There are tons of music videos out there, why not just wait for the Hipters to make them cool again, then you’ll be back to rolling in the dough!

The station was looking to slash the music videos they play be 25%.  Does that mean they think running out of videos to show? Because I have some favourites, that I would love to see on the station!

Let’s review some of them, shall we?

Sky-Some Kind Of Wonderful
Puhlease! As if you wouldn’t tune into Muchmusic if you knew that once an hour you could see Sky’s Some Kind of Wonderful. I know I just tapped into a MAJOR flashback, so I’ll give you a second. But seriously, did Canadian music ever get better than Some Kind Of Wonderful? No, no I don’t think it did.

Kelly Clarkson-Low
My favourite Kelly Clarkson song never got the attention it deserved. Imagine how cool it would be for MuchMusic to bring it back and help it deservedly top the charts.

The Arcade Fire-The Suburbs
The Arcade Fire can also be known as the saviours of the Canadian music video.  I could watch them all day, unless they ironing.  Ironing is boring, I’m sorry, I said it.

My Kind of Christmas Card!

Got this in my email the other day, made me so happy, thought I would share!

Who is Kelly’s next co-host?

If you are a radio DJ and you are a male, then you better listen up. If you aren’t, then you can keep reading too but only if you are a good enough person to be okay with letting someone else win something.  I’m not.

Regis of Regis and Kelly fame is taking a week off and instead of calling in Anderson Cooper or Jeff Probst, LIVE is looking for male radio personality to fill in for the Reeg!

I’m not sure if they’ve done this for the guys before but they did it for the girls last year and Tamara Taggart from CTV Vancouver was lucky enough to co-host with Regis for an entire day!

So here’s the deal. If you want to nominate someone, you can do it from now until December 10th.  According to the rules, after nominations close, 10 nominees will be chosen from among all nominations received and will be announced on-air on or about Monday, January 10, 2011. Viewers will be given the opportunity to vote on-line for 5 nominees who would co-host with Kelly Ripa!

I know guys from all over Canada will be going after this, so the competition should get interesting.  I’ve already gotten a couple of emails from some DJs here in Calgary who think they have what it takes!

Who would you want to co-host with Kelly?
