Halloween: Hate the day, love the movies!

Just thought I’d take a moment to share with you that Itunes is having an AMAZING sale on Horror movies.  Yes, I hate Halloween but I do love the season’s genre of movies.  SAW, Blair Witch, Shawn of the Dead oh My!

And this is actually a good sale, they have a ton of scary movies for only $4.99, not just to rent either, these are movies for sale.

If you wanted to check it out, head on over to Itunes.

(Okay, admittedly this blog post doesn’t really have anything to do with Canadian entertainment.  But my blog, my rules.  I just love me some scary movies and wanted to share!)

Mike ‘n Metro: Mike goes on date!

So one of the things that people always ask me about is why I don’t talk about my dating life on the blog.  My answer usually sounds like, “Uhhh, I’m a blogger, what kind of dating life do you think I have?”

In today’s Metro column, I decided to chat a little more openly about what it’s like to date me and why I’m a giant fan of online dating.  Actually, it more about why I’m such a catch and yet still find everyone so annoying. Can’t a blogger just sit on his couch and watch TV in peace…while someone makes him dinner?

Give the dancing a rest and let’s get RACING!

On Sunday night,   Denys Drozdyuk was announced as the third winner of So You Think You Can Dance Canada!!!  I added the extra exclamation marks to feign excitement for a show that at season three is already past its prime.

Nothing against the show itself, I just wonder what it really contributes to Canadian TV?  It is essentially the same as its american counter part, the winners leave a very little mark on the pop landscape and CTV is still limiting itself by sticking with a very tired brand.

So what should they be doing instead?  Say it with me: THE AMAZING RACE for Canadians!  Seriously, why has no one picked up this series for a Canadian run yet?  Last week’s  american edition raked in more than three million viewers! That number is almost unheard of, especially for a show in its seventeenth season!

I’ve said this before but if the network is worried about the cost, just tag behind the american racers as they are filming their season.  I’m sure CBS wouldn’t mind doing cost sharing.  Plus Canadians won’t really care if they’ve seen the challenges before, just as long as it is Canadians doing it.

So that leaves just one question:  Who should replace Phil Keoghan?  For the love of CTV synergy, please let it Seamus O’regan, we all know no one could do it better.

Update: Guy At Home In His Underwear!

Remember the Guy At Home in His Underwear?  Well he has now been there for a full twenty days and only has five more days of streaming his entire life online for the entire world to see.  When Mark first entered the house almost a month ago, his goal was to get 25,000 likes on Facebook in 25 days to raise money for testicular cancer research.

Well that goal accomplished in the first few days, so Stanfields decided to make it a little harder.  On top of the $25,000 they already agreed to donate, the underwear company  challenged the “Guy at Home” to try and get 50,000 likes on Facebook.  If he suceeds, they’ll donate more a total of $50,000 to cancer research!

So what can you do to help?  Well there is final push to get to the much ballyhoud 50,000 likes and at time of publishing this blog post, Mark was just under 45,000.  5000 likes in just five days?  Totally do-able. So go to the Guy at Home in His Underwear Page and click “like”. Then scroll to the bottom and find the SHARE button.  Post it on your own Facebook wall and boss your friends to join too.  Come on, we all know you are bossy.

Good luck Mark!  I know you can do it!

Set Visit: Heartland

The impossible has finally happened. I have fallen for Heartland. I guess that means that I officially have to change my About Mike tab. Such a hassle.

The change of heart for CBC’s extremely popular family drama happened earlier this week when I was invited out to the High River set. Up until that point, I had only seen one or two episodes of the show that regularly clocks in more than a million viewers each Sunday night (seriously, who knew!?). In case you’ve never heard of the show, the popularity of the drama has, simply put, made itthe Road To Avonlea of the Facebook generation, except instead of PEI the show is filmed right here in Alberta.

In preparation of their upcoming holiday movie, I got the chance to interview the show’s star Amber Marshall, as well as Shaun Johnston who plays Grandpa Jack and Jessica Amlee who plays the pesky Kimmy Gibbler-esque Mallory. You can expect to read those interviews in the next couple of weeks. But all three of them were completely nice and I’ve actually already filed some papers with the Alberta Government to see if I too can be adopted by Grandpa Jack. But shhh don’t tell him, it will ruin the surprise.

For now, here are some pictures from my recent set visit. On this day, this were filming on location at Maggie’s Feed Store in High River. Interestingly enough, although the store looks 100% real and is located in the middle of downtown, it was actually built specifically for Heartland. It looks so real, that visitors to the town often try to get in to buy stuff.

Having a comfy chat with Amber Marshall who plays Amy Fleming.Just chillin’ with one of the extras.

Shaun and Jessica film a scene about her horse.  Naturally.Seriously.  Adopt me.

Heartland airs Sunday nights on CBC.

Video: My Election Night Highlights!

Earlier this week Calgary made national headlines by electing Naheed Nenshi as their new mayor. I was lucky enough to be apart of the Shaw TV election night coverage and let me tell you that it was an amazing night to be a part of television.

The entire evening was hosted by the stunning Erin Strate and throughout the show I acted as the social media expert and took it upon myself to make the typical “election show” a little more exciting.

In case you missed it, here are two clips from Monday night’s election special.

The first clip features a little drinking game some Calgarians were playing on Twitter while watching our show! Was it professional? Probably not. Was it tons of fun to play? 100%.

The second clip aired a little bit later in the night. When it became clear that Nenshi was going to win the Mayoral seat, I took it upon myself to help runners-up Barb Higgins and Ric McIver look for jobs.

Who Wants to be in a Zombie Flashmob?!

I’m not going to lie to you, I HATE Halloween.  But a Halloween themed flash-mob?  Now that’s something I can get behind!

Thrill the World, an annual worldwide simultaneous dance of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, will be held October 23rd, 2010 in Calgary at precisely 5:00 pm at Stephen Avenue Mall, at 8th Ave SW and Center St SW. (Registration starts at 3pm)  At the exact same second, thousands of other dancers in hundreds of cities around the globe will also perform the iconic routine, in an attempt to break the World Record for ‘Largest Simultaneous Thriller Dance’.

Seriously?  This is already a record?  Apparatanly, last year over 22,000 people took part in the event, spanning 33 cities.

The Calgary flash mob is open to everyone, irrelevant of dance ability, and is free of charge.  Participants can learn the dance via. YouTube tutorials on the Thrill Calgary Website, and are asked to show up for the event in their finest zombie attire.

But it’s not just about dancing around like a zombie. Thrill Calgary is proud to be raising awareness and funds for Wellspring Calgary.

Is Jessi Cruickshank Dead?

Okay no, Jessi Cruickshank isn’t dead but I can’t help but notice that the bosses at CTV are certainly acting like she is. How else do you explain tonight’s Jessi Cruickshank: MTV LIFE, a one-hour retrospective about the super popular host of The After Show.

Ignoring the fact that Jessi actually left MTV this past Summer, what’s really interesting about the special is that I can’t think of the last time someone leaving a job was so celebrated,  especially in the Canadian media world!  Did Kevin Newman get an hour long goodbye party complete with media screeners and press releases when he left Global? At most, someone might take out Lloyd Robertson for a farewell dinner but a whole TV special?

Something seems fishy about this whole thing. By now we all know that no one is better at promoting their talent than the CTV media machine (Ben Mulroney —> Canadian Idol, Leah Miller —> SYTYCDC), so even though Jessi has left her MTV address in Toronto for an “opportunity in the States”, don’t be surprised if she stays in the GlobeMedia family.

The show itself is ridicioulosuy entertaining and it highlights the insanity and bluntness of the all my future co-workers…I mean the MTV Hosts. It’s impossible not to chuckle, cringe or do both while re-living Cruickshank’s best and worst moments. If anything tonight’s special reminds how much it sucks that we lost her to the good ol’ USA.

Video: Gordon Pinsent Reads Bieber!

I could write a super witty blog post about how funny it is to watch Gordon Pinsent reading Justin Bieber‘s biography, but I’m pretty sure it just writes itself.

UPDATE: Inspired by the legendary Pinsent, I’ve decided to tackle the motivational and moving lyrics of one of my own modern day heroes:  Willow Smith.
