Spooky TV Treats!

Whatever happened to shows like Are You Afraid of The Dark and Goosebumps? Those were great shows that still remind me of Halloween.  Well since we can’t have those, I guess this two spooking television selections will have to do!

Saturday: Red (Showcase)

Remember when Little Red Riding Hood was a nice little bedtime story?  Well apparently the people at Showcase remember it a little more scary. The Guild’s Felicia Day stars as Virginia “Red” Sullivan, the last descendant of the original Red Riding Hood in the new TV movie Red. The Vancouver-filmed feature is about  Police Detective Virginia and her family who have a long history of hunting werewolves, whose ancestors first stalked the original heroine.  Yeah not exactly how I remember it either.

Sunday: The Walking Dead (AMC)

I seriously don’t remember the last time I was THIS excited for a tv show.  I mean really, a whole series about a zombie invasion!  YES. PLEASE!  Besides seeing the trailer, I don’t really know about about the show except that it is about zombies, which means I don’t really need to know anything else.  While I’m not a fan of really scary movies, I am a fan of zombies and would regularly include Dawn of The Dead in my Top Ten favourite movies of all time list. Which, coincidently enough, AMC is playing right before the premiere.

Check out a review of The Walking Dead on The TV Addict.

Halloween Horrors: What to Watch?!

If you’ve ever read this blog before, you know that I HATE Halloween.  I used to feel weird about not liking it as a child but now that I’m a grown up, I’m proud to say that I have absolutely nothing planned for what I consider the most dreaded holiday of the year!

Actually, that’s not true. I do enjoy me a scary movie every now and then and luckily Netflix has quite a few doozies to choose from.  You should know that by using the term “doozies” I mean: really, really strange.  But if girls can dress up like sluts, than I can watch stupid movies.

But with so many ridiculous horror movies out there, I think I need your help. Here are some of my favourite “doozies” that I found on Netflix. Which one should I watch?

Killer Klowns From Outer Space
“An alien band of killer clowns descends from the cosmos to harvest scores of small-town victims, cocooning their prey in cotton candy to eat later. With the extraterrestrials disguised as simple circus workers, the authorities don’t suspect a thing. But the joke is on the clowns when two streetwise teens (Grant Cramer and Suzanne Snyder), armed with an ice cream truck, do battle to save their friends in this cult favorite.”

Thankskilling
“While on their way home for Thanksgiving break, five college kids run afoul of a homicidal turkey that wants them dead. As the cursed bird hunts them down one by one, the survivors scramble to find a way to defeat the possessed creature. Will the bloodthirsty turkey make this their last Thanksgiving feast ever? Writer-director Jordan Downey’s holiday-themed horror spoof features an appearance by adult-film star Wanda Lust.”

Assault of the Sasquatch
In the woods of a state park, authorities arrest a ruthless bear poacher and impound his truck, not knowing the vehicle contains the legendary Sasquatch. All are shuttled back to the city precinct, where the vicious creature escapes. Determined to exact revenge on the man who snatched him from his habitat, the Sasquatch won’t rest until he puts his “big foot” on the poacher’s body. Jason Criscoulo plays the title creature.

Another Degrassi Exit! Who is (and should) be next?

Seriously, what is in the Degrassi water?

It was just announced that Landon Liboiron who plays Declan “it’s is not rape, if I’m sexy about it” Coyne on Degrassi, will soon be the star of Steven Spielberg’s highly-anticipated adventure Terra Nova, Fox’s upcoming sci-fi series!

Liboiron has now joined a long line of Degrassi alumni who have found success on american network television including Shanae Grimes (90210), Nina Dobrev (Vampire Diaries) and Aubrey Graham (aka Drake) and north of the border where Stacey Farber is filming her second season of 18 To Life.

Since agents and networks are obviously watching Degrassi to see who than can pluck next, I thought I would do them a favour a pick a few of my favourite Degrassi stars from now and in the past, who are more than due for their turn in the international spotlight.

Anais Granofsky played Lucy on the original Degrassi and  hasn’t been seen since the second season of TNG but that doesn’t mean she can’t play Astrid’s creepy sister on Fringe.

I dare you to tell me that Jacob Goldsbie couldn’t play Luke’s tutor (and eventual BFF of Phil) on Modern Family He never got the story lines he deserved on Degrassi when he played Toby Isaacs, maybe a true comedic role will let him really shine.

Look we all know that Aislinn Paul is eventually going to be kidnapped from the Degrassi set and end up on a huge american show.  But can we promise to make sure it is a good one?  Something like Law and Order: SVU or maybe she could play one of the intern’s sister on Grey’s Anatomy?

Canadian Blog Awards: The Winners are…

….not me.

But that’s totally okay.  Earlier this week the winners of the Canadian Blog Awards were announced and it was so awesome to see so many terrific blogs get some recognition. You know I’ve been blogging for a long time when I already feel old at these awards.

While Mike’s Bloggity Blog didn’t technically win any awards, we did pick up some pretty sweet consolation prizes.  In the Overall Blog award, we got ranked number three!  Number three in all of Canada?  Yeah, I’ll take that.

The blog was also nominated for Best Pop Culture Blog and we came in second.  Seriously, not complaining at all. I know it sounds cheesy but it is pretty cool that people took time out of playing Farmville to put in some votes for the blog.  It is definitely appreciated!

Take a look at all the winners! There really are some wonderful Canadian Blogs out there.  Thanks to the organizers for putting together another fantastic competition!

Choose your poison: Cage vs. Kroeger

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a bit of a problem.  After watching the trailer for the new and dreadful looking movie called Drive Angry, it seems that Nicolas Cage might be suffering from a severe case of Chad Kroeger-itis.  That is the disease when you mistaken people’s constant teasing of the Nickelback for actual praise and choose to replicate him in almost every form.  It is a rare, yet often severely annoying ailment that effects those who have never heard of CBC Radio 3 or biologically cannot sense sarcasm in one’s tone.

For the rest of us, we have until February 11th to protect ourselves from anything to do with Nickelback and/or Nicolas Cage.  Hopefully, you have already been preparing for such an event and will be ready in time for when Drive Angry opens in theatres in a few months.

If you seek further proof, please use this trailer as reference material.

Review: Kreviazuk is orchestrated perfection!

This is a copy of a letter I would like to send to Chantal Kreviazuk if anyone is stupid enough to give me her direct email.

‘Sup Chantal,

How’s it going?  I don’t think we’ve actually met before.  But I’m a giant fan.  If I’m remembering correctly, you may have been my very first concert I ever saw when I was kid in Fredericton.  It was either you or CATS: The Musical.  I’m not quite sure it really makes a difference.

Anyway, how are things?  Probably pretty busy, so I’ll keep this short.  I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your show in Calgary last night with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.  Wow!  What a show!  I’ve been a fan of the idea of teaming up with orchestras ever since I heard Jann Arden team up with the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra.  (side note: Have you ever noticed how dirty the word philharmonic looks Chantal?  I mean really, look at it.  philharmonic.  That can’t be spelled right.)

So I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind putting last night’s show on CD or digital download?  It was an amazing experience and the Orchestrated version of Surrounded is still giving me goosebumps. Even it wasn’t last night show specifically, that would be okay too.  I know that you just finished a succesful run of shows in Winnipeg and you will soon be performing with orchestras in Vancouver (Oct. 27), Edmonton (Nov 1st) and Saskatoon (Nov. 2nd). I’m sure any of these shows will do.  Essentially I’m struggling with the fact that last night may be the only time I hear your songs with the backing of a full orchestra.

I’ve been following your career since people that you were an Alanis Moiresette rip-off and I couldn’t be happier with your continued success.  That must have felt amazing to perform with a full orchestra, eh?

Well anyway, I hope you happy with last night’s show, I know the people that caught the show will be talking about for a long time to come!

Cheers,

Mike

Being Erica Preview: Fredericton girls make it big!

If you’ve ever read this blog before you know that I couldn’t be more proud about being from Fredericton, New Brunswick.  Not only is it a beautiful city, it is also the home of Kel, the second person eliminated from Survivor: Australia.  (Remember him?  The Beef Jerky Guy?).

Anyway, Fredericton is an amazing place and besides failed reality stars, it also has produced some of the most amazing talent this country has ever seen.  (Shockingly, I’m not talking about myself.)

If you want an example of what I’m talking about, make sure you check out tonight’s Being Erica on CBC.  The episode features not one but TWO Fredericton actresses who are eqaully making their way up in the ranks of the Canadian acting world.  Anna Silk (Lost Girl) returns to Being Erica as Erica’s lesbian friend Cassidy.  As I say lesbian not to identify her but to help you remember that she once tried to seduce Erica…topless.

Natalie Roy makes her BE debut as one of Sam’s best friends.  Interestingly enough, these two Fredericton natives don’t have any scenes together but it will still be so much fun to see actresses from New Brunswick on such a great show.

Now all the show is missing is a cameo from Measha Brueggergosman.

Want a fun fact?  Natalie Roy and I were co-students of the year when we graduated high school!

Tonight’s Being Erica promises to be a great one as the gang finds themselves thrown into the middle of Toronto’s biggest party: Gay Pride!  If I’m being honest, I was supposed to have my brand new Erin Karpluk/Adam Fergus interview to post for this episode but I’m dreadfully behind.  I promise to have it up by next week’s episode, mmmkay?

What the hell is a Rocky Horror Picture Show?

Is it me or does it seem like The Rockey Horror Picture Show is EVERYWHERE nowadays.

Last week, the movie’s 35th Anniversary Edition was released on BluRay and tonight Glee will devote a complete episode to the cult classic.  They even released a separate soundtrack of just the Glee songs!  All this is on top of the usual Halloween related mayhem at movie theatres that is associated with The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I’ve never been to one but I assume they look much like the first ten minutes of Scream 2.

True fact: I’ve never, ever seen a single scene from the movie. My parents were okay with me watching Arachnophobia but Tim Curry as a Drag Queen?  Noooooooo Way!

So am I missing out?  Or is the movie just too overrated? I mean it doesn’t seem like my kind of movie, but how can I not want to watch something that features whatever the hell is going on here:

Canadian Blog Awards: Last Day to Vote!

Hey there!  Whatcha doing?  Did you know that today is the very last day to vote for the Canadian Blog Awards? True story!  It is!  I would never kid about something so serious.

Did you also know that Mike’s Bloggity Blog has been lucky enough to make to the finals in two HUGE categories:

  • Best Overall Blog
  • Best Pop Culture Blog

Also true.  Crazy, right?  Who knew!

If you wanted to take a few seconds to vote, that would be fantastic.  While you are on the site, make sure you visit some of the other blogs nominated in all the categories.  We really do have an amazing group of bloggers in Canada!

If you want some bonus karma points, you can also vote on your Smart Phone.  How smart is that!?!

Good luck to everyone…especially me!

Thanks!

Erin Karpluk: Calendar Girl!

Check out the amazing cover for the new Pinups for Pink 2011 calendar. Recognize the cover girl?  Yup, that is Being Erica’s Erin Karpluk looking STUNNING!  Wowza.  She is worth the $28 for the calender alone.

100% of the proceeds generated from the smokin’ hot calendar will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition to Karpluk, the calendar features some of Vancouver biggest rising starts including Erin Ireland, ET Canada’s Erin Cebula, Shaw TV’s Fiona Forbes and Olympian Ashleigh McIvor.
