Review: Lost Girl (WATCH THIS SHOW!) September 10th, 2010

Let me get this out of the way: Since I’ve been writing Mike’s Bloggity Blog there have been very few shows that have been as good Lost Girl.  Hands down the most ambitious, mysterious and exciting program to hit our television sets in years.  When Lost Girl premieres on Showcase this Sunday, I will finally be able to talk about what I’ve known for weeks: this show is awesome.

What it is about: Bo (Anna Silk) is supernatural seductress, a Succubus who feeds on the sexual energy of humans. In the first episode she discovers she belongs to the world of Fae; creatures of legend and folklore living among humankind in secrecy.

Did I lose you?  Hopefully not.  Just remember how crazy The X Files sounded at first.

I actually don’t want to talk about the show too much because half the fun is discovering the show’s twists and turns yourself.   Only one episode in, the show’s writers are able to suck you into an entirely new world with lots of dark and spooky corners to unveil. Simply put: Joss Whedon will love this show.

After I watched the pilot and as the end credits ran, one simple word slipped from my dry, chapped lips: “Buffy”.  Then, a giant sigh of relief.  After years of having to deal with boring-ness that is  Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries, there is finally a show for fans of the horror genre that has a great story, great characters, big mystery, strong female leads and most importantly NO VAMPIRES!  Well okay, I don’t think there are any vampires.  And if the first episode has taught me anything, you never know what you’ll see on Lost Girl.

Watch it this Sunday and thank me on Monday

Sorry, Mike, I don’t agree with your praise. As much as I like Anna Silk (and love Emmanuelle Vaugier), this show was way too cheesy to be even considered in the same class as True Blood. The sidekick girl character? Far too convoluted – her contributions to the ‘rescue’ were too convenient. Bo is thankfully the most interesting character, but that’s not saying much. I’ll give a a couple more chances because of the 2 hot women, but I’m not holding out much hope after that premiere.

Borrowings from Highlander, Buffy, any vampire series, the usual gang of “demons”, maybe some Xmen outcasts, the Kindred, Underworld, any series featuring women in tight black leather doing kicks and riding motorcycles, meaningless sex…and on and on. Formula, trope, cliche…I’m going back to curling up with good books written fifty years ago that contained something for the mind, taught something about history and compassion and society.

Just finished watching the first episode, and what a great start! I like the idea of the controlled environment for the Fae. Really looking forward to see where the series goes, here’s hoping it lasts longer than 1 season!

i have to agree with doug. i know these actors are capable of more genuine portrayals. a deeper, more nuanced, subtler, more psychologically honest representation of character. so, from where does this layer of cheese come? why all the style over substance? the best performance by far was from the old man as the pain eater. it was subtle creepiness wrapped up in a veneer of courtesy and kindness. wonderfully disturbing! after that tiny morsel of wonderful, i was left like oliver twist, bowl in hand, “more, please, sir.” only to be slapped away.

perhaps better direction? perhaps better plot development? as far as the special effects: i agree a good show doesn’t need to rely on them, but they exist to assist in the suspension of disbelief. and to that end they weren’t used satisfactorily.

i think the main difference between joss whedon’s shows and this one is that the jossverse was keenly aware of its own camp. furthermore, joss’ shows celebrated it. this, as well as the brilliant writing, is what made whedon’s shows so great. this show misses that mark.

shows like true blood are the vanguard of a new wave of better modern fantasy. they set the benchmark for what show runners should want to achieve in telling stories that captivate and enthrall. crapulence like twilight and vampire diaries only detract from the genre.

the first episode of the x-files drew us in but showing and not telling, and then only just enough to leave us wanting more. it was masterful story telling. the portrayals of agents mulder and scully were genuine and interesting.

unlike some of the pedantic exposition offered up in the first episode of lost girl.

granted, it could be worse. one the bright side, it can (and must) get better.

With everything said so far, my take is on the production value. For some reason, Canadian production has very poor special effects. This show is trying to have the some of the same effects of True Blood with speeding Vampires but it does not look good at all. If you are going to copy someone, either do it as good or better. I luv the lead actress and I hope she will go further but I am betting against this one.

I really enjoyed watching this show. I like the characters, it will be interesting to see where they take this show. I would rather see a show like this than to see areality tv show. This show is GREAT….

    I LOVE this show!

However it doesn’t touch the amazingness of Buffy yet because the writing doesn’t seem to come from as dedicated a source. It needs more subtlety in the way information is offered and more intricacy and depth to the paths set forth for Bo to take. Needs to take things slowly and tease the audience along.

Folklore is an awesome genre to explore!!! Its about time!

Kensie is completely adorable. Bo is intriguing and caries the show well. The girls are great together; love the banter. I would be happy just to watch Kristen Holden-Reid make toast if he has that smouldering look on his face and says the odd thing here and there – excellent actor as well.

Please renew it for a second full season!!!

I have never watched the show and after seeing lots of commercials I thought… Might be good. NOT! The only people that could even somewhat like this show are pubescent or someone slow in the head. Within Probably 5 minutes of this show I heard the one character say” and..like and.. Like and whatever!! Such great acting!!! Wow I will never turn to this show again! Ever!
