If you’ve watched Calgary’s Breakfast Television this year, you know that they have been going through big changes. BT Icon Dave Kelly left the show on New Year’s Eve and just over a month ago, his co-host Susanne Fox stepped away from the desk.
Well the show will be re-launching in September with brand new hosts, and if the seven emails I’ve gotten in the past two days are any indication they’ve already found one of their new co-hosts.
Rumor has it that Tara Sloan will be making the move from Toronto to Calgary in the next couple of weeks to take the reigns of the popular morning show. Reality-Tv fans might recognize her from the tv-show Rock Star: INXS.
Check out her website to learn more about the sexy new host. Judging from this decision, I don’t think this is going to be your mom’s Breakfast Television!
Have you been going through Marilyn Denis withdrawal?
Don’t worry, you aren’t the only one. Since she left City TV’s CityLine in 2008, Canadian daytime television has become tedious. Sorry Steven and Chris, you just aren’t cutting it. And can I talk about how painful the new City Line is without incuring the wrath of Rogers? I know it isn’t exactly aiming for my demo, but come on, I actually turned it off the other day just to watch paint dry.
But that is all about to change when CTV’s The Marilyn Denis Show premieres on September 20th. Not much as been released about the details the talk-show, but it is probably safe to assume there will be lots of explosions, “I’m your father” style confessions and mob style dancing….
So this is weird timing… Only hours after I wrote about my fears of losing MTV Canada’s Aliya Jasmine to an American network, Calgary-native Jessi Cruickshank has just announced that she is in fact leaving MTV Canada for a job in the USA.
Was it something I said?
Cruickshank took to her twitter account to make the big anncouncement:
“The rumours are true. After 4 years, 102+ After Shows and many a questionable outfit, I am moving to LA for a job opportunity there…I promise not to get 10 plastic surgeries and that I will be on your TVs again in Canada very soon! Keep following for updates and above all.”
No announcement on what the job will be, but other Canadian VJs have made the move down south with relative success. Most notably, MuchMusic’s Rachel Perry who is essentially the voice of VHI.
Hopefully Jessi’s this will be mean that MTV will be hiring some fresh talent too! With the exception of Paul The Intern, the network hasn’t hired a single new personality since its inception
Don’t you hate when a youtube video can show you how talentless you actually are?
That’s exactly how I felt the first time I saw one of Mike Tompkin‘s videos. Hailing all the way from London, Ontario he’s been producing amazing music videos without hardly ever using an instrument. Instead he has re-created some of the hottest songs using just his voice, mouth and naturally a tambourine. It is seriously crazy.
Here is one of his videos that has already amassed more than 75,000 views!
Halfway through you totally forgot there were no instruments didn’t you? See I told you: CRAZY. How talentless do you feel right now? Come on, admit it. This guys makes you feel like shit.
His Fireflies video is even cooler:
I hope he is paying whoever is helping make those videos because they are so kick-ass. It is so cool seeing how technology has become so accessible and hopefully it will make the professionals up-their-game!
It has been a while! How is it going? Things are good here too, you know, keeping busy.
Anyway, I just heard that LOGO has just picked up MTV Canada’s 1 Girl, 5 Gays and will start airing the show in October. That’s great news. I admittley have some problems with the show, but you will definitely love it. It’s funny, crazy and sometimes pretty frustrating. I guess it is kinda that you americans. I kid, I kid.
Anyway, I won’t keep you long, I just wanted to make sure you understood one thing: You can’t have Alija-Jasmine. Some know her simply has AJ, but either way, you can’t have her. She is one of Canada’s coolest journalists and I know the second you see her host 1 Girl, 5 Gays, you are going to want to snatch her up and keep her for yourselves and that simply can’t happen. Even you do offer her something and she accepts, I will hold you, america, solely responsible.
However, if you want a list of media personalities you can take, just let me know, it is quite an extensive list and may or may not include the entire on-air team of Etalk.
So I do hope you enjoy 1 Girl, 5 Gays as much as we have. It is hard to believe it has only been on air for one year. But remember what I said, if you come even close to AJ, I will…..well, I’ll be pretty passive-aggresive about my anger, but you’ll feel it. Or at least read about it.
If you somehow find yourself near a radio or the internet on Thursday morning at 8:20am (MST), I’m going to be on CBC Radio’s The Eyeopener talking about my favourite television shows on DVD. I know what you are thinking: Why are you watching TV when you could be outside enjoying the fresh weather. To which I respond: Have you read this blog? Why are you even here?
If you want to listen live, you can hear it on your radio in Calgary on 99.1 FM or you can listen online form anywhere in the world from the EyeOpener website. Click here to listen!
In a couple of days I will be participating in the one of the scariest and most grueling competitions out in my life: A pie-eating competition.
The battle of the pie will all be apart of Inglewood’s Sunfest which will be taking place this Saturday from 11am-5pm. If you want to watch me beat Buzz Bishop (Amp 90.3), Darren Krause (Metro) and Anthony from Avenue Magazine, then make sure you are at the mainstage at 12:45pm!
Luckily it will not be about how many pies you can eat, rather how quickly you can eat one pie. Don’t worry, I’ve already googled the subject and gotten some tips. But knowing my competitors they are likely to do the same thing, so I feel like I should inform them about some things they might not be aware of:
I’ve already eaten McDonalds twice today. My stomach can handle anything.
I’m incredbily cheap. I’m looking at this pie like it is a free meal, which means I will be starving myself before hand, just to save my money.
I talk a lot, my mouth is used going a mile a minute.
I actually don’t even like pie, so I’m going to want this competition to end quickly.
The only thing I’ve ever lost were student elections all through high school and university. So unless you show up in the high school gym wearing a short skirt, I have this in the bag.
In case that isn’t convincing enough, I feel like this video should do the trick:
Michael Bernard Fitzgerald is one of my favourite musicians that you’ve probably next heard of, but in the past year or so he’s really made a name for himself here in Calgary. He’s our own little Justin Bieber. I don’t mean that badly, I mean that in the sense that the tweens love the guy and you actually can’t blame them.
He’s amassed a huge following by writing catchy songs with appealing and relatively low-cost videos. He’s our greatest example of using social media to become an important and successful musician. The music industry could learn a few tips from him!
His last video was Movie Life and it was essentially a love letter to Calgary. Now Michael is on the verge of releasing his new video Valerie, but he’s waiting until he reaches 1000 followers on Twitter. Curse you people who haven’t signed up for Twitter yet!
So this is basically my plea for you to start following MBF on Twitter, I can’t wait much longer for a new video….I mean…those tweens, they can’t wait. Yeah, those tweens for sure.
If you want to help those tweens out, you can follow Michael at ILOVEMBF. Yeah, he’s pretty humble….
UPDATE:
He did it! He reached a 1000 followers and released the video. Check it out below, you are going to want to grab a tissue or an entire box.
When is the last time you watched and really loved a Canadian movie?
It has probably a while, right?
Well that is all going to change!
I just saw the trailer for the brand new Score: A Hockey Musical and I couldn’t be more excited! Seriously, you are reading this right now thinking I’m being sarcastic or that someone paid me to be so excited, but neither of those are true. It really looks like a great Canadian film.
Let’s consult the Great Movie Checklist to be sure:
Hockey teams singing and dancing. (check).
Nelly Furtado. (check)
The use of the word dick-face. (check)
Olivia Newton John not being as annoying as she was in Glee. (check)
Hawksley Workman and/or George Stroumboulopoulos doing anything. (check)
Obligartory Sidney Crosby joke. (check)
I don’t want to wish away the summer, but can it please be October 22nd already!?
Props to the movie for making an entire Canadian production without featuring a single cast-member from any of the Degrassi. That in itself is impressive.
Will this finally get you to go to the movies and see a Canadian movie?
This October, The Comedy Network will present the 11th Annual Canadian Comedy Awards and Festival. A big part of the celebration is the awards and let’s be honest, our comedians need as much attention as they can get! (Especially my cousin!)
This year, Canadians with have the opportunity to determine the winner in three of the biggest categories: The XM Best Radio Comedy Clip, Best Web Comedy Clip and Canadian Comedy Person of The Year. Which includes the likes of Brent Butt, Colin Mochrie, Irwin Baker, Russell Peters and Seth Rogan. (What? No girls? Caroline Rhea is going to be PISSED!)
Voting closes this Saturday, so make sure you have your vote in by then. It is like the real elections, only I think this seems to be more important!
