Ready for more 'Happiness'!

>
Remember the other day when I mentioned that I was in the process of reading The Happiness Project? Well I got a bunch of emails about it and I wanted to say that I forgot to include one very important details….

You can read the first 20% of the book online for for free! Essentially, this will put you exactly where I am… sigh, but I’m a slow reader, so don’t feel too bad!!
The best part is that you don’t have to register or give them any of your contact information, just visit the book’s website and start reading! Although, if you get ahead of me, don’t ruin it.
Although I’m guessing Gretchen ends up pretty happy.

If you missed my Book Review In Progress, you can read that here too!
And just because I love that books have trailers now:

More 'Dancing' to come!

>
Looks like it is time to haul out my tap shoes again!

So You Think You Can Dance Canada just announced two new audition dates for their newest season.
Leah Miller and Co. will checking out Halifax dancers on March 6th and Calgary area dancers on March 13th.
I’ve heard that both of these cities have had really low turn outs in the past, so if you haven’t auditioned yet, these are the places to do it. Your odds are probably a LOT better than in some of the bigger cities.
In case your wondering, the auditions for Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver have all already taken place.
For more information about the auditions, go to the So You Think You Can Dance Canada website!
Speaking of Leah, it was also announced that she has joined the Etalk team as a correspondent. Hmmm Ben Mulroney is on Etalk and hosted Canadian Idol and now Miller is doing the same. Someone at CTV went to the Synergy Weekend Workshop!

Here comes the Dentist!

The worst has happened.

The time has finally come for my wisdom teeth to be taken out.
Fuck.
The big day will be this Friday and I’m absolutely terrified. I have the pain threshold of a ladybug. And I mean that literally. I spent most of Tuesday night reading every possible news article there is about wisdom teeth. I’m pretty sure I could perform the surgery myself. I already have sweaty palms thinking about the dentist ripping out my teeth. Luckily for me, my teeth have grown into my jaw bone, so he gets to open up a bone too! How great will that be?
Fuck squared.
The only benefit of this horrible ordeal will be catching up on DVDs. I’m already planning on watching Zomebieland, Whip It, a couple of CBC screeners, the 20th season of the Simpsons, the final season of Ally McBeal and the first season on True Blood. That show should be tons of fun when I’m high on Tylenol 3.
I’m looking for pearls of wisdom. Tips? Advise? Oddly enough I want to hear the horror stories too. I need to know what I’m getting myself into. How bad is this going to be? Be honest, be brutal. Which reminds me, I’m going to watch Post-Grad too.
Help!

Any creative filmmakers out there?

Calling all Canadian Film Makers!!!!

Are you out there? Are you listening?
Oh hi, there you are! How is it going? No, I didn’t just call you to say hello, I wanted to tell you something. What was it? Well, if you hold on one second, I’m just waiting for everyone to get here…..
Everyone here? Okay. Here we go:
CBC Radio Canada has a new competition made just for all you talented film makers out there. It’s called Roots and you can submit a short film or multimedia about your personal history or that of your family! They can be in any style: avant-garde, sitcom or short docs! They can even be an animated short, photo essay or anything else that shows the story in a visual form.
Need a story: How about the time I was drunk in the Glendon Campus residence in Toronto and my “friends” shaved my head for the first time in the bathroom. Boy, was that a confusing morning. Avant-Garde? Check. Original? Check. What more could you want? I’ll even act in it!
The winners will share nearly $13,000 in prizes and their names will be disclosed online in the spring of 2010. RCI’s jury will select 8 winners, 4 in French and 4 in English and web surfers will also have a chance to vote for their favorite production in the “short film” and multimedia categories, at www.rcinet.ca/roots
I’m telling you, my bathroom story is golden.
Good luck filmakers!
Check out the Roots website today, you only have 38 days!!!

Review: This Is It on DVD (plus the return of the dancing inmates!)

>
Did you see Michael Jackson’s This Is It in theatres? Even though everyone I know wanted to see it, I kept passing. The whole experience of watching the last days of MJ with a bunch strangers was a little too weird to me. I patiently waited for the DVD release of the documentary.

Luckily that day is here and I’ve finally been able to watch This Is It. The movie, which is available on DVD and BluRay, offers a lot of surprises about Jackson and his sold-out concerts, that would have taken place beginning this summer in London’s O2 Arena.
I was shocked how involved in all the planning of the concert he actually was. I totally thought at one point I would see him rigging his own lights. Jackson is seemingly involved in every aspect of his shows. From the planning and staging to the choreography. I think all we expected Michael to have become some sort of musical-robot hybrid, but he was still a powerful man in the days leading up to his death.
I don’t know what exactly I was expecting, but seeing Jackson rehearse for his performance is as close to hauntingly perfect as I think he ever was. To have that much energy and motivation at fifty years old, is truly remarkable. I got tired just watching it.
I also really enjoyed watching all the people working with Michael. Obviously the opportunity to work on these concerts changed so many peoples lives. I got a rush just watching the dancers as they learned the steps alongside Jackson, to have been in their black jazz shoes. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for them, it was the reason they became dancers, it’s amazing to experience that feeling with them.
During the movie I kept thinking how lucky we are to have the technology to see Michael’s final days. Obviously this would mean something different if had been dying a slow death, but knowing now what we know about how and why he died, This Is It seems a fitting end to the performers story. Imagine if we had had the same sort of documentary for Elvis, Marilyn Munroe or James Dean. Their legacies will live on forever, but with This Is It, we feel apart of Michael Jackson’s.
UPDATE:
Remember the “Dancing Inmates” from the Philippines? They became Youtube sensations with their rendition of Michael Jackson’s Thiller.
Theyyyyyy’rrrreeeeee bbbbbbaaaacccckkkkk!
To celebrate the release of the This Is It on DVD. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment sent Travis Payne, Associate Director/Choreographer of This is It along with two of Michael’s top dancers, Daniel Celebre and Dres Reid to Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center. There they taught the now famous “dancing inmates”, two of the dances from the concert as they would have been performed.
I think this is their best so far, who knew murders were such good dancers!!!

How was your day yesterday? I would give mine a solid: “meh”.
Was yours as bad as Gael Shea’s? She is the minister of Fisheries and Oceans for the Canadian Government and yesterday, she got pied during a press conference! Not only did she get pied, she got it square in the face. While I don’t necessarily condone the protestors actions, you gotta give her props for her aim! Usually they miss or only get a portion of the face. Obviously this girl had practiced.

The sheer logistics of being able to carry a cream pie into a press conference, without getting it all over the place, has always baffled me. Wouldn’t a woman with cream pie running down her jacket have been a sign?

Classified's Newest Video!

>

Here is a new music video for Halifax’s Classified. It’s called “oh Canada” and it is off his 2009 album Self Explanatory.

A few days before this video was scheduled to be filmed the call went out to the citizens of Halifax, NS to join Classified on the street in a flash mob showing their patriotism, this was the result! Between the flash-mob and the heritage moment spoofs, I think we may have found our new Olympic anthem. Suck on that Pepsi.

I have to give it to the people of Halifax, the Olympics may be in Vancouver, but the capital of Nova Scotia definitely wins for Canadian spirit!!!

Get Ready Toronto, The Junos are coming!

>We haven’t even got to this year’s Junos and they are already for the next one!

Last night, at the Toronto Board of Trade’s 122nd Annual Dinner, it was announced that Toronto will play host to the 2011 Junos! The event will also mark the award’s 40th anniversary!
I’ve always said that I love the Junos because how much they support independent music. I’m excited that so many great Canadian musicians will get to play in Junofest in Canada’s biggest city, where there will probably be reps and agents from all the major Canadian labels. If you are a musician, start planning your Nickelback-esque song.
This is the first time the Junos have been in Toronto in about ten years. And according to the National Post, the music scene has changed a little bit since then:
“The last time the Junos took place in Toronto the awards were hosted by erstwhile tween-pop sensations The Moffats while the show was held in something called the “Skydome.” Bryan Adams won the award for Best Male Artist, someone named Tal Bachman won Best New Solo Artist and promptly went missing, and Matthew Good won for Best Group when he still had one. “

And in case I haven’t mentioned it enough, I’m soooooo excited for this year’s Junos in St. John’s!!!

Book Review (in progress): The Happiness Project

>

Full context: I’m not the best reader, so while I wish the following was a full book review, I simply can’t read an entire book in a week. But I still want to tell you about books that have come into my life, so consider this a book review in progress.

I don’t really talk about dating a lot. A blogger has got to keep somethings to himself. But I’m going to make an exception. On Saturday night, I had the most amazing date. There was wine, laughter and a really good book. Best of all, it was by myself.
It’s this new thing I’m trying, going on dates by myself. The basic idea is to do something you would normally do with someone, but instead, enjoy your own company. You’ll find the night to be far less stressful and it is usually a lot cheaper. The best part is that at the end of the night, there is no pressure to put out, although I usually do. (tmi?)
As I mentioned, my only company on Saturday night’s date was a book, this week it was The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.
The book follows Rubin moments after she has an epiphany, “Time is passing, and I’m not focusing enough on the things that really matter.” Mind. Blown.
While Gretchen is essentially happy, there is a lot of things in her life that are weighing her down and preventing her from being completely and totally happy. I think this rather simple observation actually describes all of us. We have our good days and we have our bad days, but I think we can all generally say things aren’t that bad. But what if we got rid of the little things? Like replying to old emails, cleaning up that closet or finally paying that speeding bill. I’m no science professor, but I think it is simple physics. We let things weigh us down. And as far as I can tell, we mostly do it for no reason. So what if we got rid of those things? What if we finally returned that book to the library or organize that brunch with old friends, our happiness would seem to be able to soar, would it not?
What surprised me about The Happiness Project was how quickly I was buying what Gretchen Rubin was selling. I think we all have an excuse generator, but in a few short pages Rubin establishes herself as a no excuse go-getter. And while you’ll have to ignore how quickly the full-time writer is able to clear her schedule, to spend an entire day cleaning her closet, the point remains the same, happiness is not far off.
It’s times like this I wish I could invent a word, because if we are all just happy, we need to be looking for “happierness“, (Can I copy-write that?)
All this and I’m only fifty pages in.
I’ll check in again with you when I’m done the book, but I’m loving what I’ve read so far.
Want to read it too? Visit the book’s website and you can devour the first 20%!

Event: YYC 4 Haiti!

>
As you know, pretty much every city in Canada is hosting a fundraiser event for the disaster in Haiti and Calgary is no different.

This Thursday, Flames Central will be hosting YYC4HAITI.
What started out as a small tweet-up, has blown up into one of Canada’s biggest fundraisers for Haiti! Twitter has recognized the event as an Official Tweet-Up.
The event will be taking place during a Calgary Flames game and the team has already donated a ton of memorabilia. But that’s not the best prize, the biggest prize that will be given away in a raffle and it is worth over $15,000!
The Strategic Group of Calgary has donated a generous destination package to Kelowna, the package includes four days at the Delta Grand Residence Club during the Okanagan Wine Festival! Um….YES PLEASE!!!
I’m absolutely going to be there and if you are in Calgary, you should come, too! I’ve read that there are going to be so many prizes, it will almost be impossible not to win. Plus, it is for a good cause, what more could you want!?!?!
