Summer reading: blogs your should know

>

  • What are you doing this summer?  Chris over at out is through has created a summer fun list and I’m having a great time following him check off a fun thing, one by one.
  • One of my favorite new reads is XOXOJes.  She bitter, sarcastic and gets some funny scoops.
  • The guys over at the review crew are saying that maybe you should hold off on the iphone until they get some kinks worked out.  This is good, since i’m STILL fighting with rogers.
  • Even though I’m bald, I have this odd facisionation with shampoo.  I think that is why i’m so jealous of Canadian Beauty.
  • Meg also has a great entertainment gossip site.  We like to play “who knew first”.  I’m pretty sure is the reason I’ll be spending my summer in a leg cast.

Cute but Cold

>

The ridiculously cute Kristin Chenoweth is currently filming a movie in Calgary. And unlike Leann Rhimes, I don’t think she is planning on sleeping with her co-star.

On Thursday, while filming, Chenowith tweeted that “Calgary is cold. The people are nice tho.”

At the time, it was 22 degrees with lots of sun and blue sky.

That, my friend, is as nice as it gets.

Welcome to Calgary

MJ: and the internet exploded.

In case you have been living under a rock the past couple of hours and when you emerged from that rock you decided to check out Mike’s Bloggity Blog before any other “news” source, I have sad news for you. You really should be reading better websites, and yes, the winners of the Ipods have already been drawn.

Oh and Michael Jackson died.

Obviously, like the rest of the world, it was shocking to read the news. And for anyone that was on the internet around the time it was announced, it was truly an amazing thing to see. Major sites like google shutting down. Entertainment sites crashing and twitter seemingly has taken down searches and trending topics, for reasons unknown. The way people will remember “where they were”, will be completely different from similar moments like with the passings of JFK and Princess Diana or even 9/11.

These are truly interesting times we live in. I just don’t know if that is a good thing or not.

best or worst idea ever?!

>Discuss.

Summer Reading: The Earth Hums in B Flat

>A great new book arrived in my mailbox today and I can’t wait to read it.

Okay, the above sentance isn’t exactly accurate.

1) I don’t know if it is great, I’m judging it by it’s cover.
2) Yes, I read. It’s just usually magazines.

But that is all about to change since finding out yesterday that I will be wearing an air cast for the 6 weeks. My accident just re-iterates why I think bloggers should stay bloggers. We should try running or jogging. We should just sit on our couches watching Entourage reruns.

But that’ not the most positive attitude to have. So yes, I will be readin this summer. And I’m going to start with The Earth Hums in B Flat, which is the first novel by Mari Strachan.

Wish me luck! And send suggestions!

Suck it McRib

Only two weeks until I go home!

When oh when will Alberta hop on board to the McLobster train.
I.cannot.wait.

Measha's close call!

>
Opera Singer (and fellow Frederictonian) Measha Brueggergosman had open heart surgery last week to repair a torn aorta!

Wow! That’s pretty scary.
Apparently the international opera star, who has also appeared on CRIBS and Project Runway Canada, is now in good health and will be back in Fredericton in July to recover with her family.
I will also be home in July for two weeks, so look out Fredericton!

Final Fitin15. What did I learn?

>

Today marks the final day of the Fitin15 Challenge that I’ve been participating in all week.  After checking out the website and reading all the entries in my contest all week, I’d like to take a moment and reflect on the important lessons learned through this challenge.

1. You have to ask people to be your walking partner.  You can’t just follow strangers on a path.

2. After wearing an air cast for the past week, I’m not above asking an elderly woman to help me cross the street.
3. Walking is an exercise that was lost on me.  Even if it is to McDonalds.
4. My readers are healthier and hornier than me.
5. Apparently all those people running, aren’t running from something, they are doing it for fun.
So even though the challenge is officially done, I think it’s great to know how easy it is to incorporate fitness into my life. Even if it means closing my laptop….but just for 15 minutes.

MMVAs: Three days late

>
So with the world falling apart around us, I had a lot to think about lately.

Mostly about the MMVAS.
I know the video award shows were actually a couple of days ago, so this posted might seem dated, but I honestly had to take a couple of days to process that annual shit show that is the Much Music Video Awards.
I think it sucks that the whole Perez Hilton vs. Black Eyed Peas drama over shadowed the actual awards.  Imagine your whole job is to plan the awards and the next morning all anyone is talking about is a bitch-fight between two people in a hotel.  I would be pissed.  (side note: I think what happened to Perez was really crappy, but if he knew that Will.I.Am didn’t punch him, why did he tweet that he did.  Don’t stir the pot and blame someone else).
The actual awards are impressive.  The coordination that must be involved is overwhelming for me to think about.  It is definitely one of the most grand and unique award shows out there.  After the Gemini’s of course.
But the awards are what they are. Unfortunately it seems that the awards are turning more and more away from their all-canadian format, which always made the MMVAs stick out. Chris from Out is Through pointed out that all the Canadian bands were stuck on rooftops or side stages for their performances, while major american acts got to be on the big stage.  I was confused to why the Jonas brothers were co-hosting, especially because they never acknowledged the VJs who were also hosting. It was a like a mashup of two different award shows.
Finally, I wish MuchMusic kinda laid off the Nickelback if for no other reason to give smaller bands a chance to shine.  It’s never really clear how the MMVAs are decided, so why not help out the smaller bands like Inward Eye and Mariana Trench that could the exposure.
But the MMVAS were HUGE for muchmusic this year. Check out some of these stats:
  •  Live broadcast of the 2009 MMVAs grows nearly 50% with teens
  •  muchmusic.com sets record with 143,000 unique visitors on June 21
  •  A record 10,000 fans envelop MuchMusic HQ to experience the MMVAs in person
If you missed the awards, CTV will be re-airing them on HD this Saturday!
Did you watch the MMVAs?  How old did you feel watching them?  Will Rumor Willis ever learn how to speak into a microphone?

Sled Island: Wednesday Pick

>

All week long I’ll be covering Sled Island here in Calgary.

In case you haven’t heard of this ridiculously cool festival, it is designed to support local, canadian and international independent artists. It’s only four years old and it already had over 250 acts perfermining all over the city until Sunday.

I’m going to be honest. I have heard of approximately three acts playing the entire festival. Which means Sled Island is perfect for me. How else am I going to learn of new and very cool music without going to all the events I can this week.
Passes for the entire festival are only $99, which works to less than $25 a day.
Tonight I’ll be checking out the Polaris Prize winner Final Fantasy. I’ve only heard AMAZING things about the Owen Pallett and it is a must see show for me.

Go to the Sled Island website and check out all the shows. If you are in Calgary, I challenge you think outside the box and see some new artists. You won’t be disappointed….or maybe you will be. But how will you know unless you try.
