VFEST: line up!

>
The VirginFest line up was JUST announced.

And do you know what?  It’s not that bad.
So far it includes:
Pearl Jam, Billy Talent, Metric, Tokyo Police Club, Arkells, K-OS, Mother Mother and there will be others announced along the way!
Tickets are $132 for 2 day passes and go on sale July 4th.
VFest will take place at COP on August 8 and 9th!  Which is great since there is no public transportation out there.  Solid.
Let it be known that I once served the members of billy talent lobster and made them wear bibs.

Tim's takes Manhattan!

>
If you have been holding out on visiting NYC because there was something missing, hold out no longer!

It was just announced that you will soon be able to order a double-double and a vanilla dip doughnut in Times Square!
Tim Hortons, in partnership with U.S. ice cream retailer Cold Stone Creamery, is going to open three co-branded stores in Manhattan!!!
Hmmm I wonder if the Sex and The City girls will be as excited as us Canadians to Roll Up The Rim!

For the love of Mike!

>
Dear ABC,

Can Mike* please be the new Bachelor?
Those girls would be 18 kinds of crazy! And he would be a blast to watch!

Big Love For Big

>

Things have been busy lately. Things have been stressful. And yeah, things have been a little overwhelming.
I’ve been looking for things that make me feel happy, yeah
I think I need to talk about the movie Big.
With all the remakes, revamps and sequels out there this summer, there is just something about the 1988 comedy that really just makes my day. No matter what kind of mood I’m in, I can just think about the classic scene with Tom Hanks playing the giant piano in FAO Schwarz and just feel content.
The movie, which recently came on Blu-Ray, has always been my favorite. Even when it was made into a short lived musical, I was one of the few people that bought the soundtrack and still listen to it on a regular basis. That’s right, I STILL listen to it.
The movie has always has an unbeatable combination for me. Small kid making it big in New York City that doesn’t end up looking like Zac Efron. For a small geeky guy like me, it’s perfect.
If you are looking for a perfect summer movie, look back over twenty years, I know you’ll find it in BIG. I always do.

The Panel

>
Today is a pretty cool day because later on this afternoon I’ll be participating on the media panel for the TELUS Calgary Community Board Workshop (visit website).

That’s right, someone actually asked to hear my opinion.
Suck on that high school guidance counsellor.
Other people on the very impressive (minus me) media panel include The Calgary Sun’s Kelly Doody, Coach from Lite 96′s Don, Joanne and The Coach. Robyn Reed and Pearl Tsang from CTV and Angela Knight of CBC.
I think I’m going to be way out of my league with those pros but it should be fun none the less.
What non-for profit organizations do you work with? I definitely need to do more!

Finally a Virgin!

>
Here is something I never thought I would say…

VirginFest is actually coming to Calgary!
In a couple of hours, The Virgin Angels will be officially announcing that Virgin Festival is back! They’ll be talking about the date, the location and more importantly the line up.
My money is still on The Moffats reunion!

One bitch for another

>
Paris is out.

Pitbull is in.
Paris Hilton was supposed to make a (paid) appearance at Cowboys during the Calgary Stampede but because someone determined they were classier than the other, she pulled out. Still no decision on who is actually classier.
So who did Cowboys replace the socialite with? Some rapper named Pitbull. I say “some” because I don’t have the energy to actually invest time into a rapper named Pitbull. While I don’t have very many standards in my life, I do have some.
I was going to say that with Paris not coming to down, the chance of getting an Stampede related STD just went down. But then I saw the picture of Pitbull and have decided to hold that thought.
3 sleeps until Stampede!

Canada Day is on its way!

>
Canada Day is only two sleeps away!

How will you be celebrating the day that our country left the womb of england and left placenta all over the atlantic ocean?
Breakfast Television’s Jill Belland just a wrote a really cute piece about what Canada Day mean’s to her.  After reading it, I can’t help but wonder how did someone so pretty and normal come from such a terrifying (in my eyes) childhood.  Woodstoves, Beachcombers and tourtiere oh my!
Read her piece here!

Newest Breakfast Television Video

>I FINALLY got my Mac back and aside from solving all the worlds problems, I’ve been able to get together the video from my last Breakfast Television appearance. It was last Friday but most of the date is up todate.

Disclaimer: It was actually a two-segment gig and you’ll notice on the second segment my shock and than laughter when I hear the name of the girl on the phone. This is because I thought it was my friend Anne on the line. Turns out it was someone else all together. Still funny though.

Here is the link to all the links I talked about!

Sled Island: The Little Festival That Should

>Also available on The National Post’s The Ampersand

Calgary isn’t really known for it’s culture. This maybe shocking to some, but not to most.

Then came Sled Island.

Sled Island is a multi-venue independent music and arts festival that started out small and rather quickly, over the past four years, has grown into one of Calgary’s most interesting and innovative events and you’ve probably never heard of it.

But for the past five days, this city has been flooded with many of Canada’s most influential and creative independent artists for the festival, all the while sitting in the shadow of the impeding Calgary Stampede.
The two events couldn’t be more different. One is small, refreshing and relatively unknown. The other is large, overwhelming and frustratingly over-hyped. If you were to ask anyone outside of Calgary about Sled Island, they’d probably have no idea what you are talking about.

Admittedly, this too was my first Sled Island. After spending most of my weekend watching shows (Hot Little Rocket, Ladyhawk, Holy Fuck, Women), watching films (I Need That Record), checking out art shows (Chris Millar, Rob Kelly) and generally having a great time, I’m happy to declare that Calgary is no longer a cultural dead zone I was thought it was. As a maritimer transplanted to the city, I’m becoming more and more impressed by the arts community in this city and Sled Island only strengthens my argument.

The quick success of the festival is even more impressive when you consider how hard Calgary makes it for any festival not involving cowboys to succeed. The costs of putting on a small 5-day festival would blow the minds of even the most veteran of event organizers. And yet somehow Sled Island organizers were able to make it work.
My hope is that festivals like Sled Island are given the chance to succeed and continue and will eventually show the rest of this country that we are much more than cowboy hats, mini-donuts and crazy right wing conservatives. We have a burgeoning artistic community that deserves to be put on the national spotlight similar to the Stampede.

So while you may have never heard of Sled Island, I have no doubt that you will someday.

Now where did I put my cowboy hat?
