The Good and Bad News.

>
You’ve probably already heard the good news already…but in case you didn’t…The Spice Girls are getting back together for, what I can tell, is the fastest world tour I’ve ever seen.

And although they will not be coming to Canada (Fredericton was robbed) they will be going to Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York. So you remember how I never ask for birthday or christmas gifts? Well there you go Mom. 2 tickets please. Thanks.

Now the bad news…..
Do you know what. I don’t even want it on my blog, I’ll just link to it.

I will not let this ruin my Canada Day weekend. You shouldn’t either!
Have a great one!

The Annika Factor

>Also available on The Q

Another year and another Calgarian on Canadian Idol. That’s right, Calgary’s own Annika Odegard is in the Top 18 for this year’s biggest televised talent show.

Although you wouldn’t know it from her Top 22 performance I’ve heard that Annika is a wonderfully talented singer and I wish her all the best. But let’s get one thing straight Calgary.

You. Don’t. Know. Her. Ok, maybe a handful of you do. But while she is on the show, I do not want to hear the following statements:

-“I have a friend who used to babysit her”
-“I once had an audition with her”
-“I saw her once at Market Mall (This applies to Chinook, Southland, Northland, Marlborough)”
-“I live in her subdivision”
-“I once pushed in front of her to be that very last person the C-Train will hold”

For the record: None of these statements or variations of them will make you any cooler or any type of a better person. My opinion of you will not change for the better, if anything it will slide slightly in the negative.

Aren’t you sick of people saying they know someone involved in Brokeback Mountain? (Guess what, it didn’t win the Oscar, so it is no better than Independence Day.) Why Calgary? Why must you tell me about your association to Annika? I will cheer her on. cause she is from Calgary, not because you once passed her at the Lilac Festival.

Thank you.

(For the record, she was in the Storybook play after the one I was in! What do I get?)

Grieving on Facebook

>Also available on The Q

An interesting thing happened the days following the Virginia Tech shootings. All over the Facebook community groups were created to remember those who had been lost in the States latest gun tragedy. In these groups people would post pictures or memories of the victims. They labeled it a place to remember, mourn and begin the healing process.

Today another such group was created but under slightly more disturbing circumstances. Late last night in the small town of Fairmont, NY a horrific car accident claimed the lives of 5 recent high school graduates. The details on CNN were grisly. As you can imagine news of this magnitude shook the small town to its core.

Upon reading about this story I decided, I guess out of morbid curiosity, to see what information I could find out about these girls. Remembering how Facebook had played a role in the healing process of Virginia Tech, I thought I would look there. To my suprise there was already a group dedicated to one of the victims of the car accident. Her name was Hannah Congdon and by 2pm this afternoon, the group dedicated to her memory had already grown to over 150 members.

I browsed through the group. While reading about Hannah’s life I was surprised by how many people had already uploaded pictures or funny stories of the fallen cheerleader. What was more surprising was to see that the creator of the group was none other than Hannah’s older sister Elizabeth.

In less than 12 hours after her sister’s death, Elizabeth had decided her way to begin the mourning process was to open her Facebook account and create a group dedicated to her memory.

These actions are both surprising and intriguing. Is this a new way for the younger generation to remember those they have lost too soon? Some might say it is important to have a community where people can be together and remember some they obviously loved, but on a social network?

If I ever lost my sister, arguably my best friend, I would be hard pressed to even be able to function, let alone turn on my computer and go through the motions of creating a Facebook group.

I’m not judging the actions of Elizabeth because I know everyone grieves in different ways. I guess I may have underestimated the power and importance of Facebook. I guess it is for way more than just poking.

The Results Are In

>SPOILER WARNING WEST COASTERS

Canadian Idol Top 22 Elimination Results!

See ya later:
Deryk (because we only have room for so many bangs)
Justin (because someone upstairs is trying to win me over)
Maud (because she had to)
Christine (because Ben Mulroney fills the boring factor)

And yes, in case you are wondering….I got 3 out of 4 right. Money and DVDs will always be accepted for gratitude.

Girls night out!

>Last night was the boys turn on Canadian Idol and now it’s the Top 11 girls.
Why am I even watching this show. Just give the damn thing to Carly Raie already!

Let’s recap:

Kellie Pickler is up first…oh I mean Tara Oram is up first and starts us off with a nice country song. I can’t think of a previous Canadian with a hardcore country contestant so her and her cowboy boots are welcome into the mix.

Martha Joy has the dubious honour of being the 16 year old that looks 27 and has a way too close connection to her mom. She also picks a song from the over played Idol playbook by singing “I don’t want to miss a thing.” But I’ll give her props because she actually does a great job with it. She changed it up just enough to make it her own. I don’t really remember her from the auditions but I really enjoy her voice. Let’s hope she is memorable enough.

Montana and her new makeover are up after Martha. Montana is by far the most famous of the Top 22, thanks to her scene stealing tears during the Top 100. Apparantly she has the same stylists as Derek and Liam. I can honestly say I’ve never heard of the song she sang before but you couldn’t help that she by far got the biggest production values during her performance. Gee I wonder who is the producers favorite.

Mila (nee Kamila) has big hair and a big voice. I certainly never knew a 17 year old that looked and sounded like her when I was kid! Man, what is in the water in Toronto?

Maud is next. She has the dubious honor of being Vote for the Worst first victim/selection. And although I don’t think she is the worst, her version of the Cranberries classic made me want to snap her right arm off or at the very least get her to keep it at her side. Sheesh, it was distracting, and why did it look like she was trying to shit the whole time.

Calgary’s Annika Odegard tries to outshine Melissa O’Neil has our new Idol. And jdging from her first performance she is going to have a little bit of work to do. I still can’t believe a voice as mature as hers can come out of a 16 year old! Man, what as I doing when I was 16? Playing the Sim City 2? Yikes. Good Job Anika, we should see you next week.

The joy of the night is up, Naomi Joy. Keen readers will remember that I called her success back during the audition rounds. Your welcome. I like Naomi because you can tell how professional she is. Plus she chose a Whitesnake song! Are you kidding me!? That’s awesome. Although I like the Rock thing she has going, I can’t wait to see her singing the amazing ballad you know she has coming.

Christine Hanlon has my favorite voice of the girls. Too bad she comes off so boring. She is so boring that she only got one back up singer. Where did the other girl go? Did she have better things to do? I certainly should. Oh and Christine just cause you stare into the camera doesn’t make you sexy. It makes you awkward.

The very lucky Scarlett next. Why isn’t everyone picking songs I’ve never heard of? Am I in a bubble? I mean this is pop music right? I should know this stuff. Am I the only one who thinks she is maybe just a little sad to be brought back cause she has to hang out with creepy Deryk who spells his name wrong? Definitely a great voice though.

Khalila and her hair extensions is up after Scarlotte. She has an interesting song choice by choosing Pink’s “Family Portrait” Hmm. I think I like it. Out of the R&B singers she is definitely the strongest, but tonight that is not a very hard title to win at all.

Alright folks this is it. My girl Carly Raie? Is it too much to ask that she sings “Breathe” again. I guess it is. I usually am writing during the performances, but not with Carly. I just sit and watch. Hole in one Carly, hole in one. Call me?

So that’s it!

So who is going home?
Maud: Because her performance made me feel awkward.
I probably would say Anika, but she has such huge support here in Calgary I think that might leave Christine vulnerable.

Boys night out.

Canadian Idol Recap
Top 11 guys.

We have alot to talk about, so let’s get right to it.

Jaydee Bixby: We will keep this short. He played “Kalan Porter” card. Well played Jaydee, well played. I’m onto you.

Clifton Murray: Seriously, are you really singing “I’ll be”? Ugh. I’m not awknowledging this performance, only because I’ve already seen it 14 times on every other Idol. Next!

Derek Hoffman: I felt awkward during his whole performance of “Move Along” He just looked so awkward and I felt like he never actually started singing you know? I like this kid though, let’s just hope that he figures out that his bangs are just one of the things standing in his way.

Justyn Wesley: Ahh creepy band guy. I don’t like ‘em. Tonight he was quoted as saying: “performing is the most important thing musicians do.” Genius. He version of “Some Kind of Wondeful” was about as interesting as watching a blue jays game. Ugh. Also, I loved how visually bummed out he was that the judges didn’t love what he did! Did he really think they would?

Dwight D’eon: I heard someone refer to Dwight as Chris Daughtry’s ugly and fatter brother. I couldn’t agree more, but singing must run in the family cause this guy can sing. He is obviously trying to win me over by singing The Philosopher Kings now let’s just lose the chinstrap beard thing and we will be all set.

Greg Neufeld. I’m not really going to acknowledge him until/if he makes the Top 10. He was here last year and I don’t really agree that he gets to come back.

Tyler Mullendore is a good performer but why is he on Canadian Idol? You just know that he made fun of it since it’s inception, but now he is on the show. But he is a good guy from Cape Breton so I’ll give him a shot. His version of “Brown Sugar” was definitely one of the most original Idol performances I had ever seen. Speaking of seeing, he took of his sunglasses! The boy has eyes! I can finally sleep at night.

Hey Andrew Austin, Ahh who is Andy Kim? Lets keep the name dropping to those who mainstream people like me know. Thanks. Also, way to lost about 20 pounds since the Top 100. Good on yah! I really liked his performance of “Freedom” but I’m afraid Andrew you just aren’t memorable enough. Mike has spoken.

Matt Rapley said he eats music. I’m pretty sure he might eat one or two other things. Our little Canadian Ruben has one of the most powerful voices in the Top 11 guys, but singing “Isn’t she lovely?” Ugh, it’s like these guys have never watched any Idols before. In the words of Kat MacPhee “I’m over it”

Brian Melo: I feel like you should know that because you wear hats all the time everyone assumes you are bald, so you might as well just take off the that. Take it off. He also said he wanted to get everyone up off their seats tonight. Ahh Brian, I don’t know if you noticed but Idol audiences give you a standing ovation like they are going out of style. I do like your voice, but your denial of being bald is not the way to win me over.

Holy crap I thought Liam and Derek were the same person! Wow, what’s the chances that we have to Emo long banged guys on Canadian Idol? Another guy with a good voice and did you hear how smooth it is? But let’s talk about the bangs. Also, I’m sure the bangs are stylish (I wouldn’t know) but they are annoying. I keep thinking you are twitching when you get them out of your face. Please fix.

Hmm…so who is going home?

I would have to say:
-Clifton Murray for reminding us all Dawson’s Creek. And not in the good way.
Justyn Wesley: Because that is all I’m asking for Christmas.

The postponement.

>So the Top 11 guys performed on Canadian Idol tonight. But I won’t be able to watch it till tomorrow night cause my friend Tony Lepage and I went to our very first comedy club tonight. It was so fun to watch amateur comics do something that Tony and I have both agreed is the hardest thing to do in the entertainment industry. There were actually some funny comics. I think I might give it a try here in a couple of weeks. I don’t think I’m a particularly funny person, but some of those guys bombed and the audience didn’t destroy them, so I think I will give it a shot. I’ll be sure to update you guys as soon as I do!

I’m actually a little saddened that I care and am actually wondering how Jaydee Bixby (JD Bigsby) did!? I’m also kinda hoping to see his parents and if they wore matching outfits again. Don’t ruin it for me. I’m going to watch both the guys and girls tonight! From what i can tell other guys to watch out for are Tyler Mullendore, Clifton Murray and Derek Hoffman.

Stay tuned for updates.

My vow…

Dear Kelly (Clarkson),

I know you are already expecting me to do this, but I just wanted to let you know that I am buying your new CD that came out today. I know it’s been getting alot of press lately, negative press that is, but I will not sway. You are still an amazing talent and I can’t wait to listen to your new CD My December.

Also, I’m so over you canceling your concert tour. I’m done crying and I’m just ready to enjoy My December. I’ve already annoyed my co-workers to death by replaying over and over “Sober”. Can’t wait to hear the rest.

All the best.

Michael

PS: Remember Justin? Gosh he was funny.
PPS: Clive Owen is a douche. (sorry mom)
